XLR indicates a Microsoft Works file.  Do you work on the Win 7 computer?  If the file has been created in Works 8 or later it can also be opened in Excel.  You have Excel?  Change the file extension is not going to help.  You still have the old computer?  Depending on what programs you have, there may be some export options that could help.

  I have the file open options set to use the viewer photo and fax Windows, however, it is always opens the .tif file in a window of IE. In reading the other posts regarding this problem, I think it may be a number of MIME, but nobody published how to fix this. I transferred from my old computer a great archive of .eml files stored in the My Documents folder and subfolders. These files will be open on Windows 7 unless I have change the suffix, in which case they open in a undesirable format. If I save new eml files to My Documents in Windows 7, they will still not open. For me, this is a major flaw in the Windows 7 system because I can't access previous records and store new depending on their subject. Is a practical solution to this problem? Surely, it is not unusual to store documents received by e-mail? This facility has been available in Windows XP, in Windows 7?

  Right-click on the eml file and go to properties and click on the button to edit, and then designate WLM as the program with which to open the file.

  I'm afraid that this answer does not help. I have Windows live mail already, but do not normally use my direct email address but my bt address as an alternative within the Live Mail "envelope. All emails open in my Inbox email bt and Live Mail ones. However, as soon as I save a message in My Documents, it opens. This applies to messages received on my account of LiveMail and my bt one. I checked this earlier by recording a message on Live Mail in connection with this request. It seems ridiculous to me that Windows 7 should allow live mail to use for communications eml files, but makes them useless for the economy. It seems to me that the only solution for me is to upgrade to Windows7 professional, and even then I have my doubts because my current Windows 7 Home premium came me pre-installed and I'm not sure whether it will accept the upgrade and if so, what will be the effect on the programs and data I already installed.

  A file with FXR and FXM file extensions is a Document received from WinFax.

  You can open the FXR and FXM file by double clicking on it and let your PC decide which default application should open the file.   If no program opens, the FXR and FXM file, then you have probably an installed application that can view and/or edit FXR and FXM files.

  You can use a Notepad or another text editor to open these files.  Number of files is files read-only, which means little matter file extension, a text editor may be able to view the contents of the file properly.  This may or may not be the case with FXR and FXM files, but it's worth a try.

  How a FXR and FXM files:
  There are two ways to try to convert a file to a different file type:

  a. open the FXR file in its default program and choose to save the file open in another file format.

  b. use a softwarefrom online file conversion to convert these files to another file format.
  
  Note: using third-party software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.

  I remembered that I changed my worksheets in .csv to transfer them to my ipad.    a simple solution not finding do not something useful online.

  I rightclicked on my .xlr file and it ends in .csv rather renamed.   so easy lol.     I received a message asking if I was sure that I wanted to change and you click Yes.  so... Excel opens the csv file.    Phew!   Thanks for your reply of thunderlight.
