I bought a laptop with Windows Vista. My father also uses the laptop, but hate Vista, so it has installed an older operating system. Thanks for any advice.

    Hello

I suggest you go through the steps and check if it helps.

    Right click on my computer

    (a) click on properties

    (b) go to the Advanced tab

    (c) click on settings under startup & recovery

    (d) change the seconds to display the operating system to 0

    (e) to the operating system you want to start the default operating system to help the drop drop-down

    (f) click Ok

    (g) click on apply

    (h) click Ok

I would also ask you to contact the manufacturer of the hardware for the recovery media. You can also check if the system has a recovery partition, and if so, try to access, which will reinstall the original operating system.

If you make financial transactions online and feel your system has been compromised, the more experienced people will recommend wipe you your HARD drive and reinstall your XP from scratch, but that is not always possible and of course is up to you depending on how you feel about this (you need to feel good about it).

If you still think your system may be achieved a malware, I would do these things before you start any troubleshooting effort:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs at:

    Malwarebytes (MMFA): http://malwarebytes.org/
    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if you wish.

Download and run Hitman Pro here and during installation to be 100% sure to refuse the installation of toolbars, decline any e-mail options, nothing to do with Bing or MSN, perform a scan time, accept no e-mail and activate the free license:

http://www.SurfRight.nl/en/downloads/ (make sure you get the free version)

Download and run TDSSKiller from Kaspersky:
    http://support.Kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?QID=208280684

The scans by operating clean, then to solve any problems.

If you still think that you have any questions, then proceed as follows:

Since the Microsoft Answers forum does not have any kind of information system request when a new question is asked, we know absolutely nothing about your system.  Not knowing the basic information a problem prolongs the frustration and the agony of these issues.

Thank you MS Answers, allowing the resolution of simple problems as frustrating and a lot of time as possible.

Provide information on your system, the better you can:

What is your system brand and model?

What is your Version of XP and the Service Pack?

What is your Internet browser and version?

Your system's disks IDE or SATA drives?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc..

The question was preceded by a loss of power, aborted reboot or abnormal termination?  (this includes the plug pulling, buttons power, remove the battery, etc.)

The afflicted system has a working CD/DVD (internal or external) drive?

You have a genuine XP installation CD bootable, which is the same Service as your installed Service Pack (this is not the same as any recovery CD provided with your system)?

Do you see that you think not you should see and when you see it?

What do not you think that you should see?

If the system works, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did not work properly?

If you need help interpreting your logs in Event Viewer, follow these steps:

Here is a method to display specific information about individual events.

To view the logs in Event Viewer, click Start, settings, Control Panel, administrative tools, event viewer.

A shortcut to the event viewer is to click on start, run and enter in the box:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc

Click OK to launch the event viewer.

The most interesting newspapers are usually the system and Application logs.

Some newspapers such as security and Internet Explorer may be completely empty or have just a few items.  The default settings for XP wants do not connect all this activity, unless you need to solve a problem in these areas.  If you enable logging for them the papers fill up quickly and could adversely affect the performance of your system with all the extras (often unnecessary) activity.

If you have Microsoft Office installed, it has its own newspapers, and they can be empty or occasional boring activity very little or, if there is no problem with your desktop applications.  It's normal.

Not every event is a problem, some are informational messages that things work very well, and some are warnings.

However, no event should defy reasonable explanation.

Each event is sorted by Date and time.  Errors will be red Xs, warnings will have yellow! s.
Informational messages have white is.  Not every error or warning event means that there is a serious question.

Some are excusable at boot time when Windows starts.  Try to find only the events to the date and time around your problem.

If you double-click on an event, it will open a window of properties with more information.  On the right are black up and down arrow keys to scroll through the open events. The third button that looks like two overlapping pages is used to copy the details of the event in your Windows Clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred at the time of your question, click on the third button at the top and arrows to copy the details and then you can paste the details (right click, paste or CTRL-V) the text in detail here for analysis.  Remove all personal information from your information after you paste If you are forced to do so.

If you paste an event, it will look something like this annoying system startup event:

    Event type: Information
    Event source: Service Control Manager
    Event category: no
    Event ID: 7035
    Date: 14/07/2010
    Time: 17:54:18
    User: Jose
    Computer: computer

    Description:
The Remote Access Connection Manager service was sent successfully a starting control.

To get a fresh start on any log of the event viewer, you can choose to clear the log (the log backup is available), and then reproduce your problem, then just look at the events around your show and troubleshoot events that are happening when you have your question.

  • How to remove Windows Defender from Vista?

Anyone know how to remove Windows Defender? It is not on the list of programs that can be uninstalled. When I try to remove it from the tree, I get a message that only a "TrustedInstaller" can remove it.

It's been nothing but trouble I got my new PC in August. I spent in Avast and MalwareBytes, but I can't stop the system to get scans in tenacious Defender. I wanted to get rid of it because it will not update install. It keeps telling me that there are updates available, but the progress bar comes in with a small piece of the execution and the stalls.

Updates Windows continues to tell me it is another Defender update available and also stops at install.

Looks like Microsoft could do a better job of coordinating its products. I'm ready to throw the new computer and become a ludites.

    Help!

I uninstall Norton before that I installed Avast. I went to 'Services' and 'arrested' Defender. Then I went to 'Properties' and 'Disabled' Defender. This should at least stop notifications. You can't repeat to you, I got it.

Click here and follow the instructions. If you would rather not remove it manually, you can run rather MalwareBytes for Mac.

I think you would work with your DBA to kill the session associated with the workbook running.

A query like this will provide your DBA with all the necessary information, it must:

    Select

    vs. Program like 'dis51ws@% ';

After the session was killed, it is a deletion of standard workbook (select file > open workbooks, and then right click on the name of the workbook, and then select delete).

  • How to remove XP pro to accidental dual boot with XP Home

I had to reformat my wife's computer.  It is a store brand AMD athlon 2500 with 2 GB of ram.  It came with a copy of XP Home recovery disk.  I wanted to create a second logical drive on the computer to store the data, but the recovery disc can not do this.

I used a copy of XP Pro I have to format the hard drive in 2 logical drives here but he installed XP Pro as well.  It is not allowed for this machine.  I thought I would install XP Home Edition from the recovery disk and it would be more to write XP Pro, but it didn't.

Now I have a dual boot with XP Pro and XP Home, I want to keep I want to delete.  It appears after the MESSAGE that there is an option for home or similar to a GRUB menu Pro.

I note in 'My Computer' C: WINDOWS and watch WINDOWS.0 I guess que.0 is the installation of Pro as it happened first.

Any suggestions on how to remove the installation of Pro and leaving the House intact?

    Thanks in advance, Al

If you have not used the computer since installing Home and Pro, the best thing to do is to reinstall the House.

Partition Wizard Home Edition "CD Boot" allows you to reformat the partition and reinstall XP Home:
    http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
Note: There is also a CD bootable version
    http://www.partitionwizard.com/Partition-Wizard-bootable-CD.html
Some of the features and functions include: resize and move partitions, the recovery Partition after an accidental deletion, Create partition, delete partition, format partition, convert partition, partition Explore, Hide partition, change drive letter, Set partition active, Explorer (content display) of the partition.
Note: To complete any task use the "Pending Operations" box at the bottom left.

  • Cannot remove Windows XP Dual Boot with Windows 7 (partition logic-bootable) (main System Partition)

When I put XP and 7 dual boot I them created on a drive with 2 partitions.  I don't have Windows XP and need space for windows 7 so I followed the instructions to remove it.  I used the Windows 7 disc in repair mode via Diskpart to delete the XP partition and (after release) change the master boot record to Windows 7 using Bootrec/fixmbr and /fixboot.  I then tried to activate Windows 7 new in Diskpart but received the error message:

The VIRTUAL DISK SERVICE ERROR - the specified partition is invalid for this operation.

It's because I had configured Windows 7 in an extended as a logical disk partition.

I had to restore from the image I had taken and copy backup my data files.  However this left me with the following configuration:

    Primary partition

C: Windows XP - local disk, system, Page File Active, primary

    Extended partition

G: Windows 7 - Local, Boot, Crash Dump, logical disk

D: programs - Local, logical disk

Files - Local, logical disk E:

Photos - Local, logical disk F:

I have EaseUS Partition Master which apparently allows me to convert drive G of elementary logic.  However he would not only because it is noted as boot drive.

How to convert G to a logical disk in a primary partition so that I can activate it?

Start Windows 7, and format the partition ON THAT XP is installed. (This assumes that XP is on the 1st partition)

Since the Windows 7 bootloader (BCD store was on the XP partition) you will need for this restore on Windows 7

    partition.

Restart your computer with the Windows 7 DVD in the CD/DVD drive. Wait for Windows Start (this may take a while if you)

have a computer to multiboot), change the language. Time/keyboard if necessary, otherwise click "next". In her "install now".

prompt (do not choose the install now option) instead choose the option "Repair your computer" located at the bottom left

    the back.

Then select the option 'Use recovery tool' and click 'next '.
Now, you will see a list of "Recovery Tools". Choose "Command Prompt".

At the DOS prompt, type the following three commands:

    Bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Bootrec.exe /fixboot (may return a not found message "Eliment")

    Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

You should now see the number of Windows Installations that have been identified
For a tripple boot computer, after that XP has been removed you will see the number 2 (the 2 other Windows 7/Vista

    facilities)

If you see a prompt "Facility add to the startup list?", enter Y (Yes) for each installation.

Remove the Windows 7 DVD. Close the command prompt window, and then click "Restart" to reboot the PC.

Reboot and XP should have disappeared.

    METHOD No. 3
If the XP partition has been installed has been severely damaged or deleted.

Restart your computer with the Windows 7 DVD in the CD/DVD drive. Wait for Windows Start (this may take a while if you)

have a computer to multiboot), change the language. Time/keyboard if necessary, otherwise click "next". In her "install now".

invites to choose the option 'Install now' and wait again invites him "what type of installion.

Now select the option "Custom (Advanced)".
You should now see a list of all existing partitions and unallocated space where resided once Windows XP.
Levy (highlighted) space and in the lower left corner click "Drive Options".

Now, with unallocated space underlined click on 'New' and 'Apply' and 'Format '.
Close the prompt "Where would you install Windows?" by clicking on the red X in the upper right.
Click 'Yes' to. Are you sure you want to cancle installation Windows' command prompt.
Then click on the option "repair you computer" at the bottom left.

Then select the option 'Use recovery tool' and click 'next '.
Now, you will see a list of "Recovery Tools". Choose "Command Prompt".

At the DOS prompt, type the following three commands:
