How to stop a download to open automatically

How to stop a downloaded file open automatically, because it is really frustrating when I download music and videos as well as the files play automatically.

It is a question, I intend to answer that I discovered the answer today and could not find it in the community. Apple support also could not solve this problem.

Answer:

In Safari preferences in the general section, there is a small box at the bottom that is checked by default, clear this check box.

The box is called:

Open your 'safe' after downloading files

'reliable' files include movies, photos,

PDF documents and text, sounds and

    I would check the following:

    1. The program has an option to stop from?
    2. Otherwise use Windows Defender to disable: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Stop-a-program-from-running-automatically-when-Windows-starts . • How can I get my downloads to open automatically?

I have download the pdf files all day to save and print. Before the update of last week, they download and then automatically open in Adobe Reader 11.0.10. Now they will download and I can open them manually, but it was much more pleasant when they opened on themselves. Thank you!

This should not be changed in itself, but it should be easy to change it back

  • How can I configure downloads to save automatically instead of asking me to open?

Recently I reset Firefox. Front whenever I downloaded a file, it automatically asked me if I wanted to open the file or save it to my computer, with save on my computer preselected. It was good because I almost never want these downloads automatically opens, and I love all my downloads to go into my file to download on a disc with a lot more space (not the temp on C:\ folder). The option "do this automatically for files like this in the future" has been useful for the type of rare file I want to open automatically (usually because it is a very small music or something).

Now, every time I download any type of file, the guest comes back with 'open the file' pre-selected, and "do this automatically for files like this in the future" grayed out. So, on more than one occasion, I clicked ok wrong and opened huge files automatically after downloading (which resulted in their burst open same hours later and play automatically once the download is complete). I would like to be able to select 'Save to my computer' and do it automatically, but this option is grayed out.

Available aid seems to suggest go to options > Applications and modify the action to the appropriate content type, but:
    (a) not all content types that I download are listed, i.e. .mov, .mpeg, .rar, etc..
    (b) change the action of the content types I (.wmv and compressed/zipped folder only) absolutely did nothing.

I'm always invited for each file download, always preselected to open the file with the 'do this automatically for files like this in the future' always grayed out.

I would like to change the way I had before, or at least automatically together all downloads to save in my download folder.

Could you try copying your old file (the one in the old data of Firefox) mimeTypes.rdf file in your profile folder? You can quickly open the folder of your profile again by using:

As for the prefs.js comparison, I would look old preferences with or another of those words in the name: download or helperApps.

  • How to avoid the pictures to open automatically?

Whenever I insert a SD card to download images Photos 1.2 app automatically opens.

Quite annoying especially because I use this app at all.

How can I avoid pictures opens automatically?

    Thank you!

Photos doesn't have an option to disable the launch of all devices.

When the Import Photos Panel opens, you should see a check mark in the toolbar 'Open pictures for the device'.   Clear this check box and Photos should not open again for this device (until you reformat the card).

The automatic launch can be disabled for each camera separately.

You can try this fix: this Terminal command allows to disable auto-start for any photo application, not just Photos.

    • Photos of quit smoking and unplug any camera.
    • Open a Terminal and paste this command and press return:

defaults write currentHost - com.apple.ImageCapture disableHotPlug - bool YES

    • Restart the Mac. It is not necessary, but it worked for me after the reboot.

I found this fix in a post of JadedEye ( leonie)

    Hi, Mary,

In the post, you have joined this response to, the solution is specific to the software that was installed on the OP (original poster) computer.

What are the unwanted downloads?  Suspicious software or Windows updates?

How long have you received these unwanted downloads?

You have recently installed new software?

To suspicious software, restart your computer and start to hit the F8 key

Select Mode safe mode with networking

Download the following tool and run a scan complete to rule out malware

    http://www.Microsoft.com/en-US/Download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=16

If these are updates to Windows, you control the downloads

    Start > Control Panel n

    Select Security

Select turn automatic updating on or off

There is a drop down menu where you will see "install Windows updates automatically
Click the menu drop down and select "download updates but let me choose when to install them."

Or, "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them."

Click Ok when you are finished
