How to stop Win7 public files read-only reset?

I use a 2 PC Win7 SOHO network and 1 WinXi PC.  whenever I have reset all files in the Public directory to "read/write by everyone", Wind 7 resets read-only.  In addition, although ' I'm the only user, he always tells me that I need to "contact my administrator" for open/save/delete etc files.

Hello

According to the description of the problem, I understand that whenever you reset all files in the Public directory to "read/write by all the world", Windows 7 resets read-only and you get a message stating 'contact admin' for open/save/delete etc files. I understand the inconvenience.

(1) if it works much earlier?

(2) exactly how you are trying to share files on the network?

(3) is the specific issue of Windows 7 computers?

I suggest you to refer to the following articles and check if it helps to solve the problem.

To view or to remove the read-only or system attributes, use the Attrib command at a command prompt:

    1. click the Start button, type cmd in the search box and press ENTER.

    2. to view the syntax for the Attrib command, Type attrib------? at the command prompt.

WARNING: If you remove the read-only or a file system attribute, it may seem like a regular folder and some customizations may be lost. For example, Windows customizes the Fonts folder and provides a special folder view that allows you to hide variations, such as bold and italics. It also allows you to change the display settings of the file in a way that is specific to fonts. If you remove the read-only attributes and the Fonts folder system, these custom display settings not available. For folders that you have customized by using the tab, customize the folder properties dialog box, the folder icon and other other customizations may be lost when you remove the read-only attribute.

If a program cannot save files to a folder with read-only, such as My Documents, change the read-only to the system attribute by using the Attrib command at a command prompt.

To remove the read-only attribute and to set the system attribute, use the following command:

    attrib - r + s drive:------------.

For example, to remove the read-only attribute and set the attribute to system for the C:\Test folder, use the following command: attrib - r + s c:\test

Be aware that some programs may not work correctly with folders for which the read-only attribute and the system attribute are granted. You can use the following command to remove these attributes:

Compress, (Compact in American English), removes waste of space, not your messages. Please read below, but if compact you and still get the prompt, after return. It is another question.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
    http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact

Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE works fine and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you do not. When you delete or move messages, the space they used remains until you compact.

Never touch anything until the compression is finished.* *.

    See:
    www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

With SP2, Automatic compaction in the background has been removed because of problems he has caused. Now, you will get a prompt to compact after 100 closures of OE, you need to do, and do not touch anything until it's finished. If you compact manually, at your convenience, this will also set the counter to zero. See this for more information:
    http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

If you are fully patched, you will now see a copy of your dbx files copied to the Recycle Bin as BAK files. If something goes wrong when compacting, the messages can be easily restored from this backup. A compact manual resets also the counter in the back of the registry to zero now.

For more information, see the information framed in red here:
    www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

To keep things running smooth and harden faster:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. It will eventually become corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

    And backup often.

  • Files read-only on the network.

Hello.  I use Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.  I have a home network with a second computer (Win XP pro) configuration.  My problem with my Windows 7 computer.  I can create and modify files it contains very well.  However when I access those files on the network, EITHER from the 2nd computer the same computer (which is connected to the computer 1, from computer1, via the network) they open read-only.  The curious symptom is that the files are read-only even when I connect to computer 1 to Computer1.  Any thoughts on this problem?

-Files are not selected in their properties read-only.

-There is only 1 account for both computers on the network, and this user is a member of the Administrators group.

-This happens for all files.  I found an article about a known problem similar to Excel files.  I followed the instructions in this article, does not.

-What happens when the files are located in C:\temp, C:\Users\\Desktop\temp and Documents C:\Users\Public\Public (supposed to be a shared folder).

    Any help would be great.

    Hello

    Check the authorization/security.

Problems of permission and security with Vista/Win7, check the following settings.

Point to a folder that wants to share do right click and choose Properties.

    In the properties

Click on the Security tab shown in the bellows of the photo on the right) and verify that users and their permissions (see photo below Centre and left) are configured correctly. Then do the same for the authorization tab.

This screen shot is to Win 7, Vista menus are similar.

    http://www.ezlan.NET/Win7/permission-security.jpg

The Security Panel and the authorization Panel, you need to highlight each user/group and consider that the authorization controls are verified correctly.

When everything is OK, restart the network (router and computer).

    * Note . The groups and users listed in the screen-shoot are just an example. Your list will focus on how your system is configured.

    * Note . All the users who are allowed to share need to have an account on the computers they are allowed to connect to everyone is an account, that means a group of all users who already have an account now as users. This does not mean everyone who feel they would like to connect.

  • Cannot delete the files read-only on display

    Hello

I copied files from my PC to the view, but when they were on the PC, they were marked read-only. Now, I found that I can't remove them from the sandisk as it says that they are read-only.

How do I change the properties of the files so I can delete them?

    Thanks for any help!

    Worto.

I format the device if these files take up a lot of space, then resyn or copy the data (do not read that things) on the device.  Be sure to back up all data you want to save the device before formatting.

The format option is in the settings menu system.

  • File read-only attribute contains a solid green box in XP SP3__

When I release read-only file and apply it everything seems correct. I have the option apply to all subfolders and the progress bar looks like it worked. When I return in the properties read only attribute button has a green block in it instead of being clear or active. I tried again and again to the output file, but he returned to play only immediately.

The read-only attribute is not used for folders in Windows XP. That's why you see the green box and nothing moves. To take possession of the files/folders in XP:

I have a game that allows (and encourages) amending providing game scripts that can be modified. However, my computer I cannot save the changes. The properties of the folder of the game continues to be 'Read only', despite trying to change this all the way to Program Files on each folder. I uncheck the read-only box, apply the changes, choose apply these changes to all subfolders, give my permission to administrator to continue... and it seems to work... until I got close the properties for this folder and open it again, to see that the file is always read-only in Windows.

A way to work around this problem, or stop the folder properties to return?

    Hi Hyruslistic,
I recommend you to run a SFC scan to check on your file system corruptions.

    follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click principally made programs, Accessories, right-click guest, and then click run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click allow.
    2. Type the following command and press ENTER:
      sfc/scannow

The sfc/scannow command analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.

Post back with the results please.

  • Files read-only - changed settings but still problems!

    Hello
I am editing a file from read-only to not read-only:
I have a pictures folder that I'm trying to change with Windows Photo Gallery and save the original name, so to replace the original... but whenever I make changes, it says
"Changes to this picture have not been saved. The file may be read-only, or you are not allowed to save to the location of the file. »
I unchecked the read-only check box in the folder options and click on 'apply', but this did not help, because it still won't let me save the changes, and when I go back to the options of folder again the read-only box is checked again!
    Can anyone help? Thank you.

The parameter 'read only' is an attribute of file having no real impact on the security settings of the individual files under it. You need to go to the Security tab of the folder properties and appropriately modify the permissions of the folder it.  In which case it's a remote shared folder you will need to do it from the computer sharing the folder, also change the share permissions to allow remote clients to write in it.
