  • Run the utility Chkdsk does not solve my problem. What should I do next?

I'm running an Excel 2007 worksheet by using the extensions both on a zip drive .xls and .xlsx.  I tried to open the two files on my PC at work, using Windows XP SP2.  I received the error message that "Excel cannot open the file because the file format or file extension is not valid.  Check that the file has not been damaged and that the file extension matches the format of the file. "I ran the utility twice using the following process: desktop > click the drive where the file > properties > tools > check now > will search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.  When the disk check process is completed, a dialog box appears that reads "check disk is over."  No exit code was given at the end of each race.

What should I do now?  BTW, I ran the Recovery Toolbox for Excel.  Read message "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.  Please run the Chkdsk utility."

    Thank you

    Yogi,

You should always start your own thread, even if you think that your problem is exactly 'the same' as the issue raised by the original question.  After all, if you have had exactly the same problem, you should be able to use exactly the same solution and should not be asked.

The data retrieved by chkdsk may or may not be usable.  The simplest data - for example, a plain text file - the more likely a file retrieved will be usable by the appropriate application.  More complex data - such as files created by Excel, Word and Powerpoint - may lack the essential elements of the formatting of the data that can make the unopenable file.

That said, you need to rename a data file retrieved with the extension (3 or 4 characters after the dot) appropriate for the application you want to use with the file.  For example, if you see a file named Dec12Letter.chk, and you know that it is a Word file, rename it to Dec12Letter.doc.

For Excel files, use .xls and Powerpoint, use. ppt.

If you are using Office 2007 or 2010, use 4 letter extensions: docx, xlsx, pptx instead.

    Hello

    1. don't you save the data before running chkdsk?

You should support your data when running chkdsk. Running chkdsk on the drive if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on that data will be lost.

Now, you will need to use a third party software to recover your lost data.

    THIRD WARNING:

I have a corrupted file on AOL and the windows XP sysytem I throw tellme to run CHKDSK, but when I try and do that it starts and then says it cannot continue so I am going in circles. Anyhelp available?

To check and repair your system drive, the check must be done on the next boot before Windows loading completely.  When you entered your command chkdsk c: f, it should tell you that it could not be done now, and it's OK to do the next time.  You then answer "Yes" and then restart your computer.

  • Cannot run chkdsk in mode in Windows 7

Well, it seems a bit odd, but these last weeks even if I try to run the "chkdsk/f/x c:" command in elevated mode it stops immediately after control of the type of volume as follows:

«The type of the file system is NTFS.»
Access denied as long as you have enough privileges.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode. »

The high mode title bar displays command prompt "Administrator: command prompt" and executes the diskpart and sfc commands quite normally, but the only problem is running chkdsk with indicator repair.

Even the GUI mode chkdsk option denies running chkdsk if repair is checked.

Tried to Disable Symantec Endpoint 12.1 and Comodo Firewall, but the problem is the same.

However, I never connected to built in Administrator profile, so today I am logged in as an administrator, windows has set up the office by creating a new profile and from there "chkdsk/f/x c:" works correctly.

Even more, if I use the following command then also chkdsk runs successfully

    runas / user: computer\Administrator "chkdsk c: /f /x.

Can you please give me a solution?

    Hi Denise,

Thank you for you answer and provide a detailed description of the issue. As you said, you had problems with his profile a few months ago, there could be opportunities for corruption in the user account that could have caused this problem.

Try to fix a corrupted user profile and check if it helps.

I hope this helps to solve the issue. If you still have the same problem, get back to us. We will be happy to help you.

Well, before I ask the question I already checked with a new profile.

Surprisingly today, after you have installed the Java runtime update a problem. Reasons? Anyone?

But thank you all for your support.

  • What should I include in my box for repair?

I plan to send my laptop HP ENVY 17 repair center because there may be something wrong with the fan. There is a grinding/humming noise. I received my box today. What should I put in the box? Some people say not to send in the power cord, adapter or battery if your laptop turns on fine. Others say sending in battery, power cord and adapter if it's a laptop. What should I do?

    Hello lisaisaduck,

I see that you have questions about what to send in the repair area.

With what you describe as the question you shouldn't send the battery or charger in the box. If the repair center needs to turn on your computer, they will have the necessary equipment.

    Hello

    Try this: instead of this:

    Run the sfc/scannow command.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929833

Use the (SFC.exe) System File Checker tool to determine which file is causing the problem and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click principally madeprograms,Accessories, right-clickguest, and then clickrun as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or clickallow.
    2. Type the following command and press ENTER:
      sfc/scannow

  • After that chkdsk runs the system repair or install Clean is necessary

I had this problem a bit lately; This is what happens:

I do something like listening to music on a Flight Simulator, etc., and the system freezes - are not uncommon, so I leave to see if she'll take back.

When he is not take it back, I hit the reset button on my PC and this is where the problems occur:

CHKDSK begins its countdown and when it reaches zero, it passes through, find the system registry to be corrupted and then goes and deletes it.

From there on, I must go and repair Windows or sometimes even to perform a new installation.

The HARD drive I use is a sweet Samsung F1 1 TB of HARD drive.

The question that has also happened at the previous disk, a Samsung F1 750Go, it was damaged but somehow and if the Windows installation disk was not able to recognize all the partitions on the drive, was not able to create one of any size.

Is there a way I could avoid this? Or y at - it advice to reduce the appearance of this?

    original title: chkdsk ruining Vista

Here is a procedure I have found to stop the process (but you need to restart it again when finished to enable chkdsk to run when requested manually:http://www.ocmodshop.com/ocmodshop.aspx?a=874.)  Here is another article which basically says the same thing:http://www.internetfixes.com/question_of_the_week/IF01129.htm.

Here's another procedure, that I found which is a little different but was published by Rick Rogers MVP:

Something is causing to set the dirty bit. Open an elevated command
by typing CMD in the start/search box, and then right-click on the entry
on the start menu and use "run as Administrator". At the prompt, run
«chkntfs / of.» Then, close the command prompt and restart the system. As this command
Resets the drive, it should not run autochk at this stage. If so, then
something you have installed is causing the dirty bit set and you need
to look at what is running in the background.

I hope that one of the following procedures works for you.  Rememver, it won't stop that chkdsk to run when you restart.  It does not address the problem of why chkdsk removes the registry when executing (should not make tha unless there is a serious problem with system files or your drive hard at first - and maybe not yet).  Once this problem is solved, open a new thread to solve the other problem, if you want someone to look into it for you.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

I'm running Windows XP sp3 on a Dell with 2 GB of ram. The corrupted file is located in a disk Seagate Expansion (E).

You should run chkdsk /f (to correct), or chkdsk/r (to repair).  If this is not the case, no repairs will be preformed.
