  I'm trying to find a driver so I can use my photosmart 7660 printer.  I am running windows 7 ultimate, 32 bit.  I used to have connected it to my computer and it worked very well, however, I had to wipe my computer (virus) and when windows has been re installed and I tried to install the printer again, when I put the disc in the computer tells me I don't have administrator rights, but I checked to see if I do and it's ok.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

  It may be easier to buy a new printer, how ever I just put new ink cartridges in it.

  So to anyone who has a HP Photosmart 7660, I solved the question to make the printer work on Windows 7. Go to start, go to printers and devices. Click Add printer, select LPT1 port, select HP then choose Deskjet 5600 (HPA) (HP), do not opt to print the page install it once it is completed click Finish. Now right-click on the printer, and then choose Properties from the printer. Go to Ports, this is where HP's problem. They say changing the LPT1 to Dot 4, or the largest port. They are mistaken, choose USB001 virtual printer USB port, go to the general tab, click on print test page and you're in business!

  I want to qualify these measures by saying that I've seen this work with the versions Windows Server that does not support printers. This is not guaranteed, but it should. If it isn't, then it is not a way to get this printer to install with Windows 8.
  
  To install a printer that isn't a driver for Windows 8 in Windows 8:
  1. connect the device to the computer.
  2. Windows will try to find a driver but will not be able to.
  3. close the notifications popping up.
  4. hold your mouse in the upper or lower part right corner of the computer screen to show the charms. If you have a touch screen, you can drag your finger left from the right edge of the screen.
  5. click on search.
  6. in the search box, click settings.
  7. in the search box, type Device Manager.
  8. Select Device Manager in the list on the left.
  9. click on view, then select hidden.
  10. you should see a device in the list with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside.
  11. right click on the device and select install/update driver.
  12. a window will come with 2 choices. Choose "Browse my computer for driver software".
  13. in the next window, select "Let Me pick from a list of drivers for devices on my computer.
  14. in the next window, make sure that the checkbox next to "Show compatible hardware" is not selected.
  15. in the manufacturers list, select HP.
  16. in the model list, select the class of PCL3 Deskjet driver, the Deskjet 990c printer driver or the driver for Deskjet 450.
  17 click Next.
  18. click on finish.
  19. try to print.

  Does anyone know of an HP generic or other certified printer driver that will work for the printer HP Photosmart 7660 with Windows 10?  I got my printer HP Photosmart 7660 since 2004 and it is the best printer I've ever owned, and I hate the idea of not being able to use this printer if I upgrade my computer to Windows 10.

  Finally, I bit the bullet and upgraded my computer Windows 7 HP for Windows 10. None of the suggestions listed in the HP forums to be able to use another driver with Windows 10 has worked for me. Some got to the printer, but any suggestions that would get to the printer the printer print pages additional and acting as a print job was sent to the printer. Then I tried something different and it worked!

  Here are the steps I took to get my old HP Photosmart 7660 printer yet faithful to work properly with Windows 10.

  Since the page devices and printers in Control Panel...

  1) click on add a printer

  (2) click on the printer that I want isn't listed

  (3) select Add a local printer with manual settings

  (4) select use an existing port and change the option in USB001

  5) click the Windows Update button to update the list of drivers and printer available

  (6) Select manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard

  (7) select Printers: series HP Photosmart 7760

  (8) enter the name of the printer: HP Photosmart 7660

  It works for me with Windows 10 and the bonus is that the advanced options are more that you want or need. No thanks to HP for not providing a suggestion valid works to their customers who need a Windows 10 print driver to use with their old HP Photosmart 7660 printer.

  Hello I have recently connectedmy Photosmart 7660 on my G5 mac OSX 10.5.8 running. I made sure that I deleted all of the old files HP from my hard drive. I also unplugged my printer (and it turned off). I then powered back on my Mac, re-connected the printer and turned it on. Once the printer is on, I ran the new OSX software update that updated the photosmart software (installed etc.). Now my problem is when I print a document, I get an error message in the Middle staing impression that the print job was arrested. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. No matter what assistance [would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  Basically, I did what you said now about the CTRL key and selecting Remove the hp printer (I had previously deleted all of the other old hp drivers etc.). Then I turned off the printer and it disconnected from my computer. Then I reconnected the printer and turned it on. Then I went to the apple icon and ran the software update. Then downloaded and installed the HP package through software update. Then, when you are prompted to set up / choose the appropriate model / driver I noticed before I skipped this step and just assumed that the installer would automatically choose the correct printer / driver. When I skipped this step already, I came across stop printing and not being able to see ink level etc. So this time I scroll through the list of printers / drivers and chose model 7660 closest number which was 7550 I also noticed that all the models in this range seem to use the same driver who was Gutenprint v5 1.3. so I thought it must be the correct driver for this printer hp group to address number. I've been running non-stop printing since then without any problems and I can also check and see my ink levels now. Hope this helps someone else with the same questions...

  Hi maddogminnie,

  I see that you can not install the cartridges and you have a metal bar that prevents you. You must turn on the printer and the metal bar should move down when you lift the front cover of the printer.

  The basic installation Guide, page 12 shows how this. Here's what you can do.

  To install or replace the ink cartridges:
  1. If the printer is turned off, press the button control panel of the printer market.
  2. lift the printer cover.
  3. press the print cartridge latch and pull it forward. The print cartridge latch opens automatically.
  4. If you are replacing an ink cartridge, slide the old print cartridge and the store, recycle or throw away.

  While I would not recommend that as a solution, I am glad that you managed to find a workaround. Looks like it doesn't have a chance to throw some error was occurring by removing the battery and cutting power to the machine. If you have additional problems, please come back.
