I can't get an AVI video file to play on my computer!

I can't get an AVI video file to play on my computer, the file is 720 p.  Windows media player says he can't play because of a codec is necessary. do you know what other programs can I use to place or what I can do to solve the problem (to get a codec to play 720 p AVI files)

(FWIW... it's always a good idea to create a system)

Regarding codecs... perhaps that the AVI file is a Xvid file...
