  • I can't send emails in Thunderbird and I tried all suggested fixes that I can find!

    I moved my old MacBook Pro to a new MacBook Pro Thunderbird (I've done it before without any problem).
    I've updated Thunderbird on two laptops before I did - version 31.0
    Race the new machine 10.9.4 Mavericks

    I started to notice intermittent problems with sending email - this seemed to release when I opened my BT mail account (the account that "feeds" Thunderbird) and then resend the email in Thunderbird.
    This "correction" has now stopped working and all what I continually get when you try to send the message:

    "Send the Error Message
    The message cannot be sent because the connection to the server of SMTP mail.btinternet.com has failed.
    The server is may be unavailable or refuses the SMTP connections. "(etc.).

    I checked with Mozilla and BT forums/help pages, then went to Thunderbird > tools > account settings > outgoing Server (SMTP) > change

    Then, I changed the settings to those recommended by BT and Mozilla:
    Server name: mail.btinternet.com
    Port - 465
    Security - SSL/TLS
    Authentication: normal password
    -User name (username)

    I also tried many variations (including the original settings)
    Server name: mail.btinternet.com
    Port - 587
    Security - no
    Authentication: password transmitted not securely
    -User name (username)

    I tried to remove my password and then redo the especially.
    I tried to turn the router and turn it back on and redo the especially.
    Nothing - apart from not being able to send email from Thunderbird works fine with incoming, I think really that I have tried everything I can. Can I remove my prefs - will this help? Is there something I missed? I wasted 4 hours and it feels like 4 days!

    Suddenly and inexplicably, I have a problem sending Gmail via Thunderbird.
    Here is the error message I get:
    "An error has occurred when sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.7.0 must issue a STARTTLS command first. d5sm23925573pdl.85 - gsmtp. Please make sure your e-mail address is correct in your mail preferences and try again. »
    This error started yesterday. Nothing has changed on my computer that I know.
    I use the Windows Firewall and Avast.

    Thanks for your reply, Christ1. I was not aware of authentication OAuth2. It's really good to know.
    I found the source of my problems, and perhaps this might be addressed in a future revision of Thunderbird. I didn't see the settings for the outgoing server (SMTP) in the left column of the main account setting window. This topic should maybe a sticky at the top of the list of the menu, as I was unaware of its existence until I found an old thread in the Google Help forum.
    To quote the user,
    "The SMTP settings will not affect incoming mail. You are probably change the incorrect server settings. In Thunderbird, you must check the definition of the SMTP server associated with the account in the main account settings page, near the bottom. Then select the settings for the outgoing (SMTP) server at the bottom of the left column, to check and adjust the SMTP server".

    I worked for 2 days to find out the movie maker, I thought happily, finished my video of my grandson and want to send it to a friend who will put it on a DVD for me.     There are problems with Windows Mail in Vista.   You need to make sure that the antivirus software does not WinMail.  See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 .

    Once you do this, then try to go to the Outbox and delete the messages there.  If you can't, close WinMail and use my Windows Mail utility to compact and repair the database and clear the Outbox (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/).  Then delete your e-mail account, close and reopen WinMail and then add your account to e-mail back again.  If it is a POP3 e-mail account and you have access to multiple devices, then you should go to tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced and set to leave a copy of messages on the server (so other devices can access the messages) and set then remove them after a certain number of days, so they don't accumulate and clog the Inbox on the server.

    What is the version of Outlook Express you're using?  , and who is your email provider.
