I have been experiancing crashes to the desktop when running The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion even though he used to work properly on my computer

I am experiancing crashes to desktop when I try to click on the main menu of the game oblivion. I've had the game for a long time and it worked when I tried it (about a year). But now it crashes whenever I click on something in the main menu. I don't remember any specific major changes that have been made to the computer, because it stopped working because I haven't used the game in more than a year, but I tried several methods of attachment:
I scanned the folder with oblivion.
I defragment the hard drive.
I deleted the temporary (more) files.
I tried running it in both safe mode and clean the boot it. (Safe mode worked for consolidated first half an hour when it also crashed)

My computer has been working with the program in the past, so I think that my computer should be able to run again:
Windows Vista: ultimate
Model: Inspiron 53OS
Processor: Intel (r) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU @2. 33 GHz
Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro

You have any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Hi SLFHer,

Look for error messages in the event viewer. If you find error messages after return the exact error message so that we can help you better.

Measures to check the application event log:

1. click on start.
2. in the search box type eventvwr.msc, and then on enter.
3. now, click Application in the event viewer (local).
4. now locate the event log on the right side of the event viewer window.

Alternatively, you can try to update your video card driver and check if that helps.

Steps to update video card driver:

a. click the Start button.
(b) in the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press ENTER.
c. Select the video card device and right click on it
d. now, select Properties.
e. in the Properties window, on the driver tab, click Update driver.
f. after the installation of the updates, restart the computer.
