  I'm not really clear on the intent of your question.  If you can get the latest version you want to buy it.  When you go to buy, you should be able to see if it has an option to buy an update of the version you currently have.  I can't find the purchase page to check it out myself...   I understand that you are unable to AirPlay from your Mac to your Apple TV.  Here are some troubleshooting steps that I recommend to go through this problem.

  Get help

  If you do not see the AirPlay icon , make sure that your Apple TV is awake and that it meets the system requirements.

  If you do not see your Apple TV in the AirPlay menu, make sure that your Mac and Apple TV comply with the system requirementsand your software from the Apple TV is updated. Also check your firewall settings:
