  The usual culprit is a monitor corrupt profile. As a temporary solution, switch the default monitor on sRGB profile in Control Panel. For a more permanent solution, you will need to re - calibrate your monitor.

• I see a red x in the Help window

  When I click to open the help and Support Windows I see red x in front of the options in the window. Example:

  That was never there before today and I know that they are not supposed to be red x and I can't find a way to fix this. The help and support window is the only place I see it.

  Try a system restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem started.  Here is the procedure: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/.  Don't forget to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points.  If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two.  NOTE: You will need to re - install any software and updates that you have installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for updates.

  Even if you have several files open in the editor, you can only record one at a time. What you see is the folder where you want to save the currently selected file.
