No idea since we can't see you - you must provide details - why you can't open pictures? What is going on? What is you get the exact error message? What version of the operating system and Photos you have?

and there's a photo for Mac forum, which is where you can ask questions Photos - I will ask to be moved your message

  • Move photos on external hard drive after migrating from iPhoto to Photos

I have a lot of photos and have you run out of space on my MacBook.  After doing some reading, I discovered that I should be bale to move my library to an external hard drive, then the point of Photos to run from the external hard drive.

I have recently updated to El Capitan, and as part of this upgrade that my photos have been migrated from iPhoto to the Photos.  I just checked the current location of my library and I found two.  One is named Photo library and which resembles the pictures one use which makes sense.  However, I also have a file called iPhoto library and it is listed as a library migrated under file type.

My question is, when I copy my pictures on the external hard drive also I copy the migrated thus iPhoto library?

My question is, when I copy my pictures on the external hard drive also I copy the migrated thus iPhoto library?

Yes, if you want to free up your internal disk storage moving two libraries of the iPhoto library you have migrated your external drive and the new library of Photos.

The two libraries share the storage for the original images and previews.  As long as one of the libraries is always on the internal disk and using storage, storage is not released: see: Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

Drag the two libraries to your external drive, then double click the pictures library to open it in photos and test it. Once you are convinced that the copied library works well, you can delete the original in the internal drive.  Do the same for the copied iPhoto Library if you have installed iPhoto.

  • Understand migrations from iPhoto to Photos

After you migrate an iPhoto for photo library, the file extension of the iPhoto Library is changed in .migratedphotolibrary, and my understanding is that the two libraries share the same files through the use of "hard links". I've also read that if one of the libraries is published subsequently, what causes the link between versions of break. Is this true?

    If so, my questions are:

    (1) If hard links break, this means that storage on hard drive required by the two libraries is increased by the size of one of the libraries? If so, who would not take a little time if the booksellers were important, for example 100 GB or more?

    (2) immediately after the migration, what happens if one of the libraries I move to a different folder? Again break hard links? If so, same question as above.

No - change or deletion of a form of photos a library does not break the hard link and has no effect on the other library - they are totally independent

    1 - Yes

    2. Yes, I believe that to break hard links - travel for sure as a library to another volume break

Why move a? Usually simply leave you it where it is for several months until you are sure that you need is no longer and then archive and delete

  • Migrating from iPhoto to Photos

I just upgraded to El Capitan and want to start using the Photos, I have followed the procedures to migrate my old iPhoto library Photos with my library of Photos appointed to reside on another internal hard drive.  I tried several times, but shortly after the migration has started I got the message that there insufficient space disc - 10 GIG necessary.  The drive I'm migration towards had 240 available concerts.  I tried to reformat the drive and emptied of all other files so that its complete 250 concerts are available, but the process still hangs on to 8% with the same message - not enough disk space.  Can someone give me an idea as to what is the problem?

What is the format of the second internal drive where the library s iPhoto stored? How many free space your main internal drive there? What is your iPhoto library

And since there is no single move procedure and what you are doing is not working, it would be useful for you to actually share the procedure that you use

  • Migrating from iPhoto to Photos from another computer

    Hi guys

I have an old Mac with Snow Leopard and 2 libraries iPhotos on it (a HARD drive, an external hard drive).

I would like to transfer these libraries on the photo library to another Mac that sits on Yosemite and then upward

So basically A Mac has not installed pictures and Mac B is not installed iPhoto.

Is there a good way to do this?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Manu

Move the libraries for the new Mac (network, direct connection or DHM in Mac OS extended (journaled) format and drag them to the Photos icon in the dock to migrate each)

  • iPhoto or Photos?

Which one should I use? I have both on my computer. I use OS X El Capitan 10.11.3

Some of my photos (in each program) I can't edit. I click on edit and all the editing options are grayed out.

I have also a large NUMBER of photos that are not displayed. They are a white box with nothing in it.

Any idea what's going on? Where are my photos and what program should I be using? Does this mean photos are doubles and too much room in iPhoto and Photos?

A question at the same time help

1 you use is totally personal - support iPhoto has been interrupted for more than a year and one day he will stop working - for those who have only update every five years that is not a problem - if you install each update, it is - and Photos have more features than iPhoto and a stream of completely different work - so you fist need to make this decision

2 - once you take a decision on the software you want to use, then you will need to provide clear symptoms and doubts, including the version and exact context

    4. with regard to space - not - when you are migrating from iPhoto to Photos both libraries use hard towards the same original photos links and previews same so little extra space is used - Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

5 - and you're three updates behind - your first step should be updated to OS X 10.11.6, the current version of the operating system - which might or might not help things but is a good idea

  • Use iPhoto or Photos for books?

Hello. I have more than a dozen iPhoto libraries, one for each year. What I do is make albums and then the books for my trips or a book each year. I'm back doing the books. Now with the Photos app (and faster, etc.), I wonder if I should migrate my iPhoto library Photos and allows to make albums and photo books? Is there any advantage in doing that? It would mean that I'll end up with several libraries of Photos, because it cannot allow me to combine several iPhoto Library in pictures.

I thought I would like a link libraries, instead of importing thousands of same photos in the new libraries of Photos. So the main question is whether or not there is an advantage in the migration of all my libraries of iPhoto in the libraries of Photos, or simply stick with iPhoto and make my books there. Thank you.

You can no longer print books in iPhoto in any case, because Apple has stopped the iPhoto book printing service.  If you want that your books printed by Apple, the new Photos.app as the only option now.  Photos Presto can print your iPhoto books, if export you it to a PDF file.

If you open an iPhoto photo library, the library migrated will not need a lot of extra storage, see this document: Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

Long term, it will be best to take Photos for Mac, because iPhoto will be less intense.

A few options: If you also have the opening, you can easily merge all iPhoto libraries into one before migrating to Photos.

  • transition from iPhoto to Photos

I have several print projects on the road in iPhoto.  Initially, I learned that these projects will not pass to the Photos without any problems.  Maybe so, but I lose some of the formatting and layout when I do.  For example, a layout 6-photo on iPhoto turns into 2 pages of Photos and the text appears in a new font without formatting - e.g., italic, bold, etc.. To help work with the projects that I just upgraded to an iMac 27 ".  What I want to do is to find a download of iPhoto and continue to work in the old application, but I can't find a source for downloading.   Any thought of a download source or suggestions about the hoe maintain the formatting of iPhoto?

You need iPhoto 9.6.1 - if you have it on any system you should be able to download it from the App store using the apple ID which is joined

  • How can I migrate iPhotos to Photos - reflection I did but I seem to have two libraries

I thought that I migrated my Photos iPhotos and then my library to iCloud, where I have more than 26 000 photos and video. Now, I'm moving the photo library on an external drive. On my iMac in the pictures folder, there is a library of photos and and the iPhotos.migrated library. But on my macbook pro (which is currently my main computer) the pictures folder has a library of Photos and iPhotos library in the pictures folder. It does not specifically say 'iPhotos migrated' as it does on the iMac. So when I move the library of photos on the external drive and designate it as the system - there's something missing. I want to have my entire library of photos on the hard drive external and download all original there. But I did not all 26 000 more pictures on the local external hard drive - only in the cloud - even after checking the Mac's original download. I wonder if something was not working at the moment where I first migrated my iPhotos to the pictures library. All of the suggestions.

Sorry, but 'something' is missing is not what we can answer - what exactly you see as missing and whence?

When you migrate from iPhoto to the iPhoto library is migrated - changes if you open it using iPhoto Photos ask you if you want the iPhoto library or photo library and if you open the iPhoto migration library is deleted since you can now make changes causing it to be different from the photo library

When you move with Photos or iPhoto library you break hard links, so all the pictures are copied to the destination

If you have a library of Photos that is optimized shape iCloud photo library you must first download the originals

I hope this helps - learn to give clear details of what you have and what is your question

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the operating system. Tips and tricks for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the operating system. In order to get help, you need to give as much information as possible. Include things like:

    -What version of iPhoto.

-What version of the operating system.

-Details. Full, a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with export, then explain by describing how you try to export and so on.

-History: Is it going hard? Everything has been installed or removed? -Are there any error messages?

-Have what measures you already tried to solve the problem.

-Something unusual on configure your? Or how you use iPhoto?

Anything else you can think of that could help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IPhoto to Photos in Lightroom, to El Capitan Mountain Lion

    Hi all

I am currently 10.8.5 OS as I just never took the time to upgrade the operating system (stupid I know).  Now, I would like to upgrade the operating system to El Capitan, which in turn from my understanding will make obsolete iPhoto and put pics in existence on my mac.  I would firstly only using Lightroom for my photo editing but don't know where to start.  I have my backup time machine and all recently copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive.

One of the problems is that my HD has only 23 GB available on the left and my photo library is more than 100 GB.  Someone at the genius bar told me that the Photos would copy all those who, when I initially switch so necessary to have 200 GB of free space? Is this true? If so, that will be limiting it step I need to set first by my photo backup and then delete on my HD.

Basically, I'm just in the whole confused about what I should do.  I consider myself as a hobby enthusiast when it comes to taking pictures and a complete and total novice/jerk when it comes to their management later.  Now they are all sitting in a large library in iPhotos and I really didn't have the first idea what I have to do to clean up the mess I made.

Thank you very much in advance for any help you can offer,

    John

Yes with the upgrade to El captain should not upgrade to Photos - if you have iPhoto 9.6.1 before upgrading the OS, you can continue to use it until a future upgrade of the BONE breaks, but it is not maintained and external links like Apple print products are currently abandoned

You don't have to use the Photos and you do not have to migrate your library if you don't want to - if you do not want to migrate you will need more space - and you will probably need more space to migrate to LightRoom (which, if it is new for you has a large learning curve and does not fit with Mac programs like t-Photos - 23GB is basically the absolute bare minimum free space) , so you do really need to address that no matter what you are doing for the management of the photos or even if you stay with your current software - either put the Photos (and possibly the music) library on an external drive or buying a larger for your Mac drive

Migration to doe Photos not double space needed - once the migration is complete, it will take a very small amount of extra space - Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries
