I would like to separate a full name into multiple cells.

I would like to separate a name, for example, the Robert a. Clarke Jr. , who is in a cell in four separate cells.

  • First name
  • Middle name
  • Family name
  • Suffix

I have about 100 names I need to separate and it would be too tedious to do individually. The names are separated by spaces. Help!

HI Jon,

Here's one way:

  • Select all of the cells containing names *.
  • Copy
  • Open a new document in numbers *.
  • Click on the T button to insert a text box.
  • Click in the text box and paste
  • Press Control + F to open the Find dialog.
  • Click on the v next to the machine and choose Find and replace from the menu.
  • Click in the search box. Type a single space.
  • Click in the replace. Press option + tab to place a tab in the box.
  • Click on replace all.

This replaces all spaces with tabs.

  • Click in the text box, press command + A to select all, copy.
  • Click in the upper-left cell of the empty table of this new document non-en-tete. Dough.
  • Check the results and adjust as cas.* *.

My results with your sample data listed here:

Notes:

Issues such as the placement of the name of John can make it easier to manipulate each column separately. First column stuck after you select (single click) A2 (on this table with any column header) and sticky, second column stuck after you select E2.

* Find find any space in the document. Replace all would replace them all of these spaces. Placing the list copied to a separate document preserves the original data, until you want to change it.

As a general rule, the adjustment will be composed to locate entries (as the first line above) where a name (John) is in the wrong columns. The adjustment is to select the first item out of place and all elements of the same name located to the right, then clicking and dragging the first element to the right and a fall in the same row in the correct column.

More than one line can be adjusted at the same time, but only if they can be chosen in a single group, and all in the same column start. Sorting the columns with blank cells which must contain data can be used to collect lines requiring the same adjustment set for a move in bulk to the correct locations.

Example:

The new table on the column sort C will bring all the lines with no entry in this column in a group either at the top or bottom of the list. It will be simple names (no entry in the column 'second owner') with only a first and last name (without name or other initial). Select all the family names in column B, and then click the top and drag (and others) a column to the right, a fall on the same line of the C column.

Kind regards

Barry
