Impossible to download Vista SP2, "Unknown Publisher".

I have Vista SP1. Could someone help me please? I've been struggling with my phone for 3 weeks now. I restored to factory settings and the first thing tried to manually download SP2 from the Microsoft site. At the end of the download, I get this message:
"The file has been blocked because it doesn't have a valid digital signature." Unknown Publisher
If I save it, and then try to open it by 'Run as administrator', I find myself with ' Data is not valid.
Before you try to download it I updated Windows updates "check updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." There are 1 account, I am the administrator and there is no password set.

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) won't fix this!

HOW to do a clean install of Vista: section "If you want to reinstall Windows Vista by running a new installation...". "of http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-Vista#section_3

Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of everything on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e. other computers) and before using a USB or SD card that is not brand new, or has not been freshly formattedotherwise:

4 steps to help protect your new computer before going online
     http://www.Microsoft.com/security/pypc.aspx

NB: No matter what Norton or McAfee free trial which is preinstalled on the computer when you bought will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free and download/run the removal tool before installing updates, Windows Service Packs, or updates IE and before installing your new anti-virus application.

Norton Removal Tool

McAfee Consumer product removal tool
     http://download.McAfee.com/Products/Licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

NB: There are updates prerequisite that MUST be installed before you can install the SP2 (or SP1). I wouldn't recommend trying to install Vista Service Pack, unless and until it is offered by Windows Update.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, good reputation and stand-alone computer (that is, not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) repair facility.

Good luck!

  • Impossible to install Vista SP2

My laptop came with Vista Home Premium - I confirmed that I have SP1.

I downloaded the preparation tool successfully KB947821 update & restarted the laptop.  I manually downloaded SP2 but when I go to install I get the following messages:

-proc not found - error 8007007f

the procedure entry point? write@cmemorylog@@QAEXJ@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library c:\windows\syswow64\wbemcomn.dll

In the last 6 months I also was not able to install .net framework 3.5 via automatic update.

I had originally thought SP2 has been installed via automatic update, but I've confirmed that my system shows SP1 only.    I now ran into some programs that I can't download because of the update of missing files (ie: latest Turbo tax program).

    Please notify.

Trust me: you do want not McAfee Security Center or Comcast new freebie Norton installed on your computer!

Norton and McAfee applications are notorious for not to uninstall (or upgraded) themselves.

    1. download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal, save it to your desktop tool: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3 uninstall McAfee Security Center via start | Control Panel | The Maintenance and the system (if you use Classic view, skip this step). Programs & features | Installed updates day & reboot.

  • Impossible to install vista SP2 on my desktop dell home

I'm trying to upgrade to service Pack 2 (vista) Home edition. But the software will go mthrough the installation process and fail. the error message says this is an unexplained error and try again. I retried over 50 times and it still does not work. If anyone can help?

    Hello Gibbs,
There may be several reasons why the SP2 installation fails on your computer, a primary being corrupted WMI, we saw a lot of our users complaining about the same.
If you get an error code 0 x 800 then well want to try the following.

    1. open an elevated command prompt. (go to start > start search & type cmd.) Then right-click on it and select run as administrator)

    2. in the command prompt window, type winmgmt /salvagerepository

    3. restart the computer.

    4. download the standalone installer from the link below & then try to install SP2.

  • Impossible to install Vista SP2, says needs update of system tool

I use Windows Vista Home Premium 32 - bit edition with Service Pack 1.  His ability to perform automatic and manual, updates have not completely.  When I try to update, it tells me that I need what is called a system update tool.  The Download Center Windows says I need Service Pack 2 to use this tool.  But when I tried to install Service Pack 2, it failed, saying he needs the system update tool.

Then... I need Service Pack 2 to install the system update readiness tool, and I need the analysis of system update tool to install Service Pack 2?  Huh?

The only other option I can find for this is to fix the "CBS Manifest" which is apparently corrupt.  To do this, I need to "repair Windows" using "Windows DVD.  But this computer comes with pre-installed Windows and did not come with a 'Windows DVD.

Is there a solution to this problem?  Any advice would be helpful and appreciated.  I ran virus and malware scanners, are looking for things that can interfere with the update process, defragmented my hard drive and cleaned the registry.  What other options are available?

  • Impossible to install Vista SP2 - error 800f0900

I run the update package and invites me to accept the license. It fails then after about 10 seconds with this error. I tried several times to install the service pack, including the stand-alone version. Other updates were installed fine.  I've disabled my AV (norton) software and closed all programs. I have cleaned the update of Windows, as shown in the steps "General Windows Update troubleshooting" and still get this error. I searched high and low for articles related, and that this error pops up regularly in previous discussions. I ran many times analysis tool, including a new on the list updated as recently as yesterday and I still have this problem.

The system is a Dell Studio 1737 with 2 x 320 GB drives. No further questions. Help!

Great help, thanks.  In any case, I found a day 1 Norton Ghost backup on DVD from when the system was brand new. I restored all files in the directory windows\servicing\packages for patches of two problem (955839 and 853839) and catalogues of CSI corrupted in windows\winsxs\Catalogs\

The response was so corrupted files and installed SP2.  I would have found it much more quickly if, when the tool DONE, he actually TOLD me to look in the newspaper! I had taken a correct end of the update TO mean that she couldn't find any problems.  Seriously, I would put that!

  • Vista SP2 Installation fails (error 800706BE Code) via Windows Update

I am running Windows Vista Business (32-bit) SP1 and I noticed that Vista SP2 is available for download by manually checking in Windows Update last night.  After having seen that it is a large download (more), I started the download, left my PC and left the House.  When I got home, my screensaver was away and when I attamped my password to disable the screen saver and see where I was in the process of updating, my password did not work.  Then I did a hard reboot but then could not connect under my admin user account.  I've then logged in as my wife (standard user - no password) and went to Windows Update where I noticed that the SP2 for Vista Installation fails (error 800706BE Code).  I spent most of last night and all today so far tried to solve this problem.  There are several problems here... When I click on "Install" in Windows Update, I get a message of "is not necessary: 1 update" (even when I look in the installed updates it says that the update failed).  If it is not necessary, then why is it listed as an important update that must be installed?  Endless loop... In addition, I'm not a password reset for my connection because I have a password saved on a flash drive.  Then I tried using all the older passwords that I remembered and none worked.  Shift caps lock was not on either.  I've logged in as my wife, went to the Microsoft Download page and eventually find the link to download the standalone version of SP2 Vsita, but after downloading the massive file, I didn't have the right to install it because I can not connect as an adminstator!

(sigh) Can someone please help with this?  Thank you

    Naveen,

Thank you very much for your suggestions!  Your suggestion of restarting, press F8 and choose "repair your computer" worked.  I was able to do a system restore and I chose a date where my old password was still in use (I had just been invited to change a few days before I tried to download Vista SP2).  In addition to losing my cookies and automatically complete IE8 - everything is back to normal.  I have not yet tried a 2nd try to SP2, and I'm very hesitant to do it now!

    Thank you once again!

Running a registry cleaner can be very dangerous, and Yes, that could cause problems. You can restore the registry from the backup that you made before using the vacuum cleaner. If you do not have a backup, reinstall Windows.
