Impossible to partition external hard drive

I have two HD with files in MS-DOS (FAT) format. But I have a few files more than 5 GB, so I would like to create a partition exFAT, without losing the original files (aka, without formatting the HD).

One of them, when I use disk utility, I open the menu of partitioning, but when I try to add a new partition (by clicking on the button +) nothing happens! See the screenshot:

The other is won't let me even open the menu score (it's gray, and I can't click it):

What should I do?

Thank you

You can't resize a FAT partition. You cannot create a partition where there is no free space to do so. You can not re-partition / re - format the drive without erasing it.

  • Impossible to partition my hard drive. Help

Once I partitioned by mac then merged it, now I'm trying again to partition but unable to do so. It shows error.

You have a damaged directory. Have you tried to use first aid on your Macintosh HD volume? When you say that you tried to merge two partitions was one such a Boot Camp partition? And, if so, did you use Boot Camp Assistant to remove it? The following applies to Yosemite or El Capitan.

Repair the disk for El Capitan

    1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the COMMAND and R until the Utility Menu appears.
    2. Disk utility and click on the button continue.
    3. Then select layouts withdrawal (usually Macintosh HD) entry of the volume of the list to one side.
    4. Click the first aid tab on the toolbar and wait for the done button to activate it. Click it, and then quit disk utility.
    5. Select restart from the Apple menu.

If the above does not correct the disk, you will need to repartition it. This erases everything on the disk, so if you are able to backup, then I suggest to do this first.

  • Impossible to duplicate to external hard drive using the CCC

    Hi all

I wanted to make a clone of my HD, because it started acting weird lately and decided not to make a clone of it when I get a new HD, but when I use ccc I select my boot drive (the one doubtful), then my drive external usb (2 TB) as my destination and copy everything BUT after 4 hours no progress but 4 points work but nothing is transferred. I formatted the external hard drive as it should be set to format less 10.8 in disk utility. So what I'm doing wrong here? Is there an easy way to do it? I think that I have V. 3.5 ccc, y at - it a bug with this version? BTW, my external hard drive is a USB 3 but compatible for 2 and my mac has no problem reading and writing to it. Any help with this or other means or programs to clone my drive is welcome.

    Thank you!!!

Have you checked for an update of the CCC?

Have you considered Time machine? You can restore from that.

My old external HD Time Machine does not so I bought a 2 TB Seagate Backup more Portable Drive to replace it. It has been formatted for Windows but provided a configuration "NTFS_ Mac download for_ I ran. I'd like to partition the drive & use 1 TB for Time Machine.

When I go into disk utility, I cannot and select the Seagate HD, the choice of the Partition is grey and not selectable.

Any suggestion how to get this HD formatted correctly so that it is recognized in disk utility?

I guess that the external hard drive is formatted NTFS, so disk utility does not have to perform all the tasks in this topic. It you can't format it on some Windows system with the FAT file system? Once the FAT is made, the Mac of THE it reformats with HFS. However if you want to do with the above partition size (1 TB HFS and 1 TB NTFS or FAT) then can try you with a disk management utility. • Creating Installer bootcamp on the external hard drive instead of the USB partition?

    Hello

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 and mountain LIon. I want to install Windows 7 via bootcamp, but my USB isn't enough grand (only 4 GB of free space). Instead, I expect to use my external hard drive. However when I go to bootcamp to create the installation program, it gives a warning that my hard drive will be erased. It is not possible to create the installer on a partition instead of him wiping the entire HARD drive?

    Thanks for the help!

Boot Camp and Windows supports installation on an external drive. There are specific exceptions in the versions of Windows, see Microsoft for more information on installing Windows on an external drive.

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand that you are unable to transfer files from an external drive on another drive. Please let me know if this isn't the problem that you are experiencing.

Before troubleshooting, I have little information on the issue.

    1. Do you receive any error or display message?
    2. Did you recent hardware or modifications to the software on the computer before this problem?

Try the methods and then check after each method:

Method 1: Transfer files from a drive to the location on the desktop or a temporary folder and then try to transfer them to the destination disk.

Note: make sure the free space on the disk in the destination drive.

    Method 2: Run the Fixit:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/

Method 3: Disconnect your player safely, and restart the computer. And then try to transfer the files.

If the problem persists, post your reply with results and questions above. We are happy to help you further in the advanced troubleshooting steps!

    It will be useful.

  • external hard drive partition copy

I have an external hard addrtiion to my computer.  I have a disc managerment that allows me to copy partitions.  If I copy the partion on my internal hard drive and stick it in my outside, is that I gave two fully functional WIndows XP now. If Windows crashes I'll be able to start on the external hard drive?

And even ewrase and reformat the drive internal and copy the my external hard drive4 patition.   Indeed, never lose Winows XP and all my programs installed again?   Or is it simply a desire that can really be achieved.

Your program has the ability to create a partition bootable (what is the name of the program)?
If your program has the ability to clone, then this is the way to go if you want just an exact replacement for your internal drive, if a problem occurs catastrophic. A better option would be an imaging program that allows you to create images of your internal drive like this at some point. In this way, if you have a regular image, say twice a month, so you can fit maybe three or four images on the same drive that you want to clone in. A cloned disk must be the same size or larger that the drive is cloned. An image is compressed and takes less space.

  • The external hard drive partitioning

Can Hello: Anyone help me with a beginner?

I have a 3 to external hard drive that I want to score in three volumes of 1 TB. But every time I try to use DiskPart it divides the first partition in a 2 TB and from there I can not extend it. When I cut it up to 1 TB it gives me two volumes, K and L, but then I can't expand the volume of L. It's all leaving me with 746 GB unallocated I can't use.  Is in anyway possible of this Dove upward from the way I want?

You must convert the GPT disk. Delete all partitions, right-click on the gray area on the left and select "convert to GPT disk.
