Partitioning an external hard drive

I'm about to migrate to a new iMac from an older iMac.  I bought a new external hard drive I want partition, on the one hand for time machine and one for the backup of photos from another external hard drive.  I would like to get external drives partitioned and set up on the old system if possible before migrating to the new computer.  The new Mac will recognize the properly partitioned drive?  Thank you

I guess that the external hard drive is formatted NTFS, so disk utility does not have to perform all the tasks in this topic. I am a rookie just to switch to Windows Apple Mac and I'm looking to back up my new iMac with a Seagate hard drive 2 TB external.  My Mac is a 1 TB hard drive, I'm looking to partition for backup and storage.  Is this a good idea?  Is there a simple way to do it?  I appreciate any help I can get.  I also bought three years of Apple support, but I'd rather do it myself, so I thought I'd give this discussion from the community to try.  Thank you!!

No, it isn't. Your working data and backups must be on separate drives in case one of them goes down.

  • Can not resize the partition to external hard drive

I have a LaCie D2 Quadra 1 TB external drive that I used occasionally since 2009. Way back when I partitioned into two parts, the two put in place under Mac OS X extended (journaled). I put one in 867 ~ GB and the smallest to 133 ~ GB. The smallest one I use for a bootable backup.

I want to increase the size of the bootable part. DiskUtility looks that would, without erasing any data. But even once I selected for the largest part smallen (without going into the blue "in use" section) I can't always increase the size of the bootable. The grabber resizer indicator seems pointless because it won't pull up. (It's in the lower corner of R).

I made sure property allows me to read and write on both partitions.

I will be grateful for a solution.

I have an external hard drive. Empty, but divided into two partitions. (I see two drives)

How can I meet two partitions?

I tried using the disk utilities, but I got the message that I couldn't change the partitions.

(In Dutch: "Deze kan niet worden gewijzigd partitie"; in English, something like: "this partition is not editable")

What is the procedure that you follow?

    1. Select the disk in the sidebar that contains the partition you want to enlarge, then click on the Partition.

    2. in the list of available Partition, select the partition in the partition you want to enlarge, then click on remove.

The partition is immediately erased, leaving the space it occupied available.

    3. resize the partition by doing one of the following:

    • Drag the separators between the partitions in the list of available Partition.

    • Select a partition in the Partition layout list, and then enter a value in the size field.

  • Creating Installer bootcamp on the external hard drive instead of the USB partition?

    Hello

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 and mountain LIon. I want to install Windows 7 via bootcamp, but my USB isn't enough grand (only 4 GB of free space). Instead, I expect to use my external hard drive. However when I go to bootcamp to create the installation program, it gives a warning that my hard drive will be erased. It is not possible to create the installer on a partition instead of him wiping the entire HARD drive?

    Thanks for the help!

Boot Camp and Windows supports installation on an external drive. There are specific exceptions in the versions of Windows, see Microsoft for more information on installing Windows on an external drive.

Your program has the ability to create a partition bootable (what is the name of the program)?
If your program has the ability to clone, then this is the way to go if you want just an exact replacement for your internal drive, if a problem occurs catastrophic. A better option would be an imaging program that allows you to create images of your internal drive like this at some point. In this way, if you have a regular image, say twice a month, so you can fit maybe three or four images on the same drive that you want to clone in. A cloned disk must be the same size or larger that the drive is cloned. An image is compressed and takes less space.

  • The external hard drive partitioning

Can Hello: Anyone help me with a beginner?

I have a 3 to external hard drive that I want to score in three volumes of 1 TB. But every time I try to use DiskPart it divides the first partition in a 2 TB and from there I can not extend it. When I cut it up to 1 TB it gives me two volumes, K and L, but then I can't expand the volume of L. It's all leaving me with 746 GB unallocated I can't use.  Is in anyway possible of this Dove upward from the way I want?

  • Using a Mac to partition a USB external hard drive to use to start Windows 7 on a PC

    Hello

My PC hard drive died recently, and I need to reinstall Windows 7. Fortunately, I have a Windows 7 .iso file on my Macbook Pro. I also have an external hard drive USB empty. I try to use the Mac (in particular the disk utility program) partition this hard drive and load the .iso file in it, with the intention to start the system and install Windows 7 on my PC. (NB. I have a new internal hard drive which I intend to install Windows on to, but it's something that I should be able to handle later and should not be relevant at the moment.)

As my DVD player also decided to break (I had not used for a long time), I can't burn the .iso to disk image file and start that way.

So my question is, what is actually in all possible ways to use my WD 500 GB external hard drive to boot Windows 7 from USB? If so, is it possible to configure the hard disk with the .iso image file using a mac? I think I need somehow do "bootable" my hard drive to boot from it, but I don't know how to do this using a mac, so that it will be compatible for Windows startup.

I've had this problem for days now and nothing I try seems to work - I tried what seems like all combinations of formatting, partitioning, extracting, BIOS-set-up-ing and file-system-change I can think of. Any help will be really appreciated. Also, if you need information such as specifications, just let me know and I will try to provide all the details I can.

In addition, I understand that there a lot of messages on the boot from external hard drives, but I looked carefully and found nothing for my situation (more precisely using a mac).

Thanks in advance for help; If all goes well there is something obvious that I'm missing that I can fix it easily.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand you want to make bootable Windows 7 disk using Mac computer.

About a tool to burn an iso image on Mac, I suggest you contact apple support.

    https://discussions.Apple.com/community/desktop_computers

However, as a solution, I suggest to go to one of your friend who has the operating system windows download Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and burn the iso image.

Detailed suggestions are mentioned in the following article:

I hope this helps. If the problem persists or all linked windows queries or issues related to the Windows operating system, please get back to us. We are here to help you.

  • external hard drive partition removal

WD external hard drive has bought recently.  He had a factory partion and I can't remove it.  Disk management I tried and do me not (as an administrator) to remove it.  I can change the drive letter, but not anymore.  It shows up as a CD drive. but this is not a cd.  I have not installed the factory program that came with the disk that is on this partition (665 mb).  Rather I copied information from the computer to the disk manually (I know not so old school).  I want the missing drive, but have failed so far.  Probably should have formatted drive until I copied the data on it, but too late now (it took 8 hours to copy all the data).

    Help?

    Hello foxman24,

The partition you make reference to contains the WD SmartWare software. So you can successfully unlock your drive on each computer that you connect to. If you do not use SmartWare and do not want this virtual CD you can disable it by following these instructions: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=YJvBcl
    Hope that helps.

  • 2nd partition on my external hard drive does not appear in windows 7

    Hello

I partitioned the standard hard drive of my system by partition magic. He managed. But this time my drive external hard was also plugged in the computer.

After you restart the system, I discovered that partition 1 my disk external drive of 500 GB is accessible but 2nd 500 GB partition is not displayed in my computer. In disk management it shows but have no details and no letter. I tried to rename the letter, but got an error on disk management.

I have seen other threads associated with this problem as using DISKPART or uninstall the driver but no help. Because after you have reinstalled the driver 1 partiton is visible but not another.

I found a temporary solution to this problem. I resized the partition unknown by reducing 1 GB
