  The company that I work wants to go paperless and we are deploying iPads with Expert PDF that synchronize with our FTP server. It works very well, and when we sign in using PDF Expert on the iPad we can actually sign with a pen and make it look like a paper signature.

  We are also keen to deploy portable computers able to reach for some of our field technicians, because they must use Xactimate while on a construction site. Rather than give them a phone fantasy (looking at the Tablet, Lenovo ThinkPad X 230) and one iPad, I rather just use the laptop in the same way that we would use iPads to sign the documents.

  The problem with that is that I can't get Acrobat or Reader to allow me to draw a signature in a signature field. Is this possible? One or the other when I go to the Signature of the place and the window shows that I have that the certificate option, other options are all greyed out...

  How can I achieve what I'm looking for? Is there a particular setting or the way to save the PDF file (out of scope) to allow the signature fields to shoot?

  OK, so I thought about it and I have to say, Adobe went back on it. In Reader 10, you can simply go to the extended tab, select apply ink Signature, select the box and you're done. 11 reader do you by going to the tab of the Panel, select the place of Signature, and then select draw my signature. BUT, for that to work really, signature fields in the form must be removed from the PDF or the only option you get is to use a certificate. Good job Adobe, to complicate a simple task.

• Impossible to change an attribute of read-only for the My Documents folder in Windows 8

  Everything I put in My Documents directory is converted into read-only, so all my files in this folder (especially my PDFs) cannot be opened OR downloaded/sent online. I tried to use cmd and Type attrib - r "c:\users\myaccountfoldername\documents" but nothing works, document folder still has that little padlock on its icon. I also gave everyone full access to this folder, but whatever I do, I can't change the property "read only". Even if I uncheck that manually in the properties, it continues to go back.

  I looked for a solution now and I still have solved it. I ignore it if I could, but I put a lot of important and frequently accessed files in my library of Documents, so I really need to get this figured out soon.

  I am struggling with the links between PDFs.  They all work in Windows, but some work and some are not under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.

  I use the following directory structure to create a hierarchy of pages in the "menu" with links to other PDFs:

  C:\nCode Desktop ISR2\nCode Desktop ISR2\source_docs\contents\Draft FM files where 6.0 6.0 .book; C:\nCode Desktop ISR2\nCode Desktop 6.0 ISR2\source_docs\contents\Draft\graphics for graphics 6.0.

  There are about 50 other directories for PDF documents (they are what you get using the menus), one for each file .book and seam FM, a path such as C:\nCode Desktop ISR2\nCode Desktop ISR2\source_docs\designlifetheory\draft 6.0 6.0.  This creates a designlifetheory.pdf. There are cross-cutting links to other PDFs from some of these files.

  For the 'menus' content, I created a book by the menu. The menus are one page long.

  Books create a single PDF file (i.e., not multiple files per pound). The books are all outputs in a single directory, C:\nCode Desktop ISR2\nCode Desktop ISR2\Deliverables 6.0 6.0.

  I use the NewsLink and gotolink commands.  NewsLink orders are all on master pages.  Gotolink controls are all on the pages of body. A typical gotolink would be "gotolink map_of_help.pdf:helpmap".  This one seems to fail constantly on Linux.  I tried to use 'gotolink map_of_help.fm:helpmap', which also fails.  Should I use "FM" instead of ".pdf" in the link?

  The .pdfs are created using print to Adobe PDF.  PDF configuration's settings: Options for working Standard, view generated PDF in Acrobat, convert CMYK to RGB. Bookmarks: Generate PDF bookmarks; Tags: Generate PDF marked; Links: Create named Destinations for all items and paragraphs.

  I tried to put all the books in a single directory using Save as, with all related paths and open books closed books.  I tried the dumping of all FM and .book files in the same directory. I tried out in different directories.  I have combed the archives and tried to follow the training module of Shlomo "FrameMaker books & multifile links."

  I don't seem to get it, whatever they may be.

  Any help for this beginner appreciated.

  Your links look OK, directory-wise.

  A link could be crossing the directory root if, say, the document is located in a subdirectory under C:\nCode Desktop 6.0 ISR2\ and was designed to, say, masters C:\nCode 6.0 ISR2\...blah bla or on another disk.

  Another thing: it's just me and my UNIX experience, but using spaces in paths or just file names feels like you have trouble, especially if you want the final product to be portable to other platforms.

  If the links are relative, and they work under Windows, as you say they do, then my guess is that the drive under Linux is the problem. Try to visualize using xpdf in Linux and see if the links work then.

  As matter of fact, I have a very large manual (69 manuals with about 400 000 links) to my Linux clients, and some time ago, I gave Reader 8.1.2 on Linux for xpdf, because I didn't have time to wait for a fix. The truth is, the links in Reader 6.0 do not work, and I'm tired of having to test each new version of the player who came out to see if she has actually worked.

  I would be interested to know if you draw the problem to the reader on Linux, and if you find a version of player plus 8.1.2 later on Linux that works.

  I did recently on my HP ProBook 450 G2 Kubuntu Linux 15.10 running.

  A new version of the BIOS (01.16 Rev.A 1 December 2015) was available, but for Windows only.

  What I had to do to install the BIOS under Linux:

  * Download the exe file (for example: sp74048.exe): this is an archive

  * unpack with 7zip

  * go to my laptop configuration: restart, press [ESC] >

  Configuration of the BIOS F10 > MAIN > system update BIOS > BIOS update using local media

  * read the instructions:

  "Place the system on a FAT32 partition no BIOS BIN file more

  on the system or on a removable USB hard drive

  Ubuntu is not an operating system that is supported by this platform, so there is no guarantee that all features work as they do in Windows. I have seen users who have had problems getting the keys to touch, fingerprint readers and graphic drivers working properly due to lack of drivers - official, so you can be yourself.

  Make sure that Acrobat Reader DC is updated Release Notes | Adobe Acrobat, Reader.

  If the problem persists, try the solution below.

  The default "save under" Acrobat/Reader DC dialog box is different from the dialogue box you had in earlier versions of Acrobat/Reader, it also allows you to record in the clouds and previous locations that you saved the files. It is possible that when Acrobat/Reader tries to connect to the 'cloud', it runs into problems. You can try to disable this feature to see if this brings your backup in the back of the box: open Acrobat Preferences, then go to the "General" category and uncheck "show the online storage when you save files:

  I need to sign documents, save them, and then send by e-mail. I wasn't able to do my job for two days and I'm very worried.

  I activate this function without problem with the latest version of Adobe.

  Please check if the PDF file is drive extended or not, otherwise, you will need to get the extended PDF file reader using the Acrobat application to activate the extended rights so that you are able to save the signed PDF.
