Impossible to update XP

I did a fresh XP install on the recovery partition on my HP laptop. I need to be updated so that the SP 3 is installed. When searching for available updates, an error message says "Files required to use Windows Update are longer registered or installed on your computer". I tried to search for files, but it does not specify what files are missing. I have an HP integrated update, but it is for a different purpose. ActiveX is installed. I would really appreciate some help on this. Thanks in advance.
