  I tried to fill this paint group direct (and others) with a gradient, but the gradient does not fill the entire form. It seems that the location of the gradient is confused so that it only fills in the center of the shape. I have attached a screenshot below as an example.

The problem is that when I select both letters and go to live paint it won't let me choose ' do ' so I can't paint. And I can't use the fill bucket, it says "the selection contains objects that cannot be converted."   Looks like you are trying to make a group of LivePaint live text objects. You can't do that. As the alert, you can use paths.

  You can convert the text into paths objects by selecting the Type > vectorize.

  I think there must be a shortcut to switch backwards and forwards on the pallet.

  You can not have brushes or traits of variable width within a live paint group.

  You can either:

  -develop before entering the live paint

  -work with a copy of the railways in live paint

  -Apply a stroke again for the live paint group using the appearance Panel, but then all the strokes have the same appearance
