  • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users is not accessible. Access is denied

I am running windows XP and trying to install MS Office 2010, the error came that the installation could not be completed because I had no access to this folder.    When I looked in the folder through "my computer", it gives me the error message above.   The properties show 'read-only '. I tried to uncheck the read-only, but it keeps defaulting to the unique state of reading.

    Hector in the morning,

Sorry for the late response... If you are sharing your c drive everything then this folder will also be shared and it can't be empty. There must be records in the breast. Try to return to the ship owner of this folder... Try adding your account to connect to this folder with permissions and give full access to the tab share.

  • c:\Documents and settings is not accessible. Access is denied

Even if my user account appears under my being the administrator, it is still not allow me access to my documents and settings files.  It is said to "c:\documents and settings is not accessible. Access is denied. "When I came to my computer, I know I opened at least two accounts, both with full administrator access, and yet the account opens is called"Judy"which is my name and at the same time, I'm sure to set up he asked me who has computer it was, so I wrote my name, but when I connect to my computer the account that opens is called"Judy"that even if I never named an account, it is still the only account he allows me to open. When I go to the command prompt to change user names, the screen goes black, and this same account "Judy" appears towards the top and asks for my password.  Simply, it will not show two accounts that I actually put in place.  I followed the instructions from the answer to someone else who has had a similar problem and he showed how you can determine if the account you are using is a standard or administrative account.  I did what told him to do and he came that Judy was indeed an administrator account. I was also able to show the names of all accounts on this computer and stood in the two accounts I made, of which none were called Judy, so I know that these accounts are in there, somewhere and why they are not listed when I ask to change user accounts is a mystery to me.  I've been going around in circles with this.  Everybody out there familiar with this kind of madness?  Any help is appreciated.

Documents and Settings is not a real file in Windows 7. It is a junction which is configured to allow existing programs to interface with the Windows 7 folder structure.

Instead, Windows 7 uses these files:

    C:\Users\*your User Name * \My Documents

    and

    Username C:\Users\*Your * \Appdata

    (appdata is a hidden folder)

Look in C:\Users to see which accounts exist.

Also you can access the control panel > user accounts to edit.

    What does the message above?

    Ruby101,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers community.

This problem occurs because the security of the user ID has changed. Even if you use the same user name and password, your security ID no longer matches the security ID of the owner of the folder that you cannot open.

To resolve this problem, you must turn off Simple file sharing, and then take ownership of the folder:

    1. disable the option Simple file sharing:

    a. click Startand then click my computer.

    b. on the Tools menu, click on Folder Optionsand then click the view tab.

    c. under Advanced settings, clear the use simple file (recommended) sharing and then click OK.

2 right click on the folder you want to take control and then click Properties.

    3. click on the tab Security and then click OK in the Security message, if an unknown device appears.

    4. click on Advancedand then click the owner tab.

    5. in the name list, click your user name, administrator , if you are logged in as administrator, or click the Administrators group.

If you want to take ownership of the contents of this folder, click to select the check box Replace owner of subcontainers and objects .

    6. click on OK.

You may receive the following error message, where folder is the name of the folder you want to take care of:

You are not allowed to read the contents of directory folder. Do you want to replace the the directory permissions with permissions granting you full control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.

    7. click on Yes.

    8. click on OKand then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and the contents of the folder.

    Hi tehshibz,

Please use the Microsoft Windows 7 forum.

Belongs to your computer from a domain?

This is by design and is a function of (UAC) user account control and the
ACL on the root of the drive. The ACL allows that the administrators and system
for writing files to the root of the drive. UAC means that even if you are a
Member of the group from the administrator, you are not running as an administrator, unless
    raise you.

If you really want, you can launch a process allows you to write the
files with as an administrator, then you can write. If you try to
Drag / move a file, you get a prompt for elevation. It is recommended that
solution is do not store data however.

If you really want to store files in the root of the d: and you do not want
raise every time, you can resolve the situation by adding an access control

list entered for your account to the root of the drive, as follows:

    1. click on the window button: all programs: Accessories
    2. right click on command prompt
    3. Select run as administrator and accept the prompt
    (4. run this command: icacls d:\/Grant fooSadOI) (CI) (M)

That grant foo user alter permissions on d:\. All objects (IO) and
containers (CI) will inherit these permissions. You replace foo
with the name of your user account.

Once do you any application you run as user foo will be able to store
data at the root of the C: drive. You will also have losened default
security settings, with all the caveats that implies.

Your user profile may be damaged and therefore you can remedy.

Follow the steps in the link for the Fix damaged user profile : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

  • Where can I find the Documents and Settings folder or the folder on Vista?

I need to find a Real Player file file so I can delete it, but am unable to find the floder Documents and Settings.  I need to delete a file called treestate.dat but am unable to find... Help, please!

    In Windows Vista user profiles

In Windows XP, 2000, 2003, user profiles are stored in c:\Documents and Settings. In Windows Vista, the profiles are now stored in c:\Users. You will see a folder c:\Documents and Settings in Windows Explorer in Vista, but you will also notice the shortcut icon on the folder, and you will not be able to access this folder. c:\Documents and Settings is now a junction Point. You can use the random dir command to see where c:\Documents and Settings point to or use the table below.

The following table lists the old profile path and the new path under Windows Vista.

    Old path

    New path

    \Documents and Settings

    \Users

    \Documents and Settings\Default User or
    %LogonServer%\NETLOGON\Default user

    \USERS\DEFAULT or
    %LogonServer%\NETLOGON\Default

    \Documents and Settings\\My Documents

    \Users\\Documents

    \Documents and Settings\\My Documents\My photos

    \Users\\Pictures

    \Documents and Settings\\My Documents\My Music

    \Users\\Music

    \Documents and Settings\\Favorites

    \Users\\Favorites

    \Users\\Contacts

    N/A

    \Users\personal

    \Users\\SavedGames

    \Documents and Settings\Change Data

    \Users\\AppData\Roaming

    \Documents and Settings\Settings\Application Data

    \Users\\AppData\Local

    \Documents and Settings\\Start Menu

    \Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\ start Menu

    \Users\Public

    \Documents and Settings\All Users Menu

    \ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start menu

    \Documents and Settings\All Users\Bureau

    \Users\Public\Desktop

Records to take note of here are the folders in the path of all users. Many legacy applications that use outdated methods to solve the system folders, will solve the railways under C:\ProgramData when looking for common places. For example, the joint office can be resolved as C:\ProgramData\Desktop, however; This is actually a point of junction for C:\ProgramData\Users\Public\Desktop. A random entry in the C:\ProgramData folder dir reveals the following Junction Points:

  • Two questions. We wish to remove the Vista and download XP Pro and would not let me explore the "Document and Settings" in the C"" drive.

    Mr President

Buy a laptop the year last Dell with VISTA. It won't let me partition (including shrinkage etc.). No matter where you go that it denied access, including loading the program. Search function I'm trying to understand for a year yet, I can't find.

I want to explore the "Document and Settings", but access is denied.

Finally, I gave up on VISTA now that I bought a XP Pro... Tried to format the drive it did not show me the hard drive.

Direct booting from cd said that it found no hard drive to load. I am just desperate and sick of this VISTA. Please help to get rid of this OS.

Come on first, site of the manufacturer of your computer, check to see if your model computer has XP drivers available for it...

If the XP drivers are not available for your model, forget the idea.

If Yes, download and save to a CD or Flash drive.

Save all your data because it will be lost during the installation of XP.

Then follow the steps below to do a clean install.

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

I am the administrator of my new computers.  I just upgraded from XP to Windows 7.  Why don't I have access to all parts of my computer?  i.e. folders in documents and settings, etc.  How can I change this?

    Hello

Since Windows XP, in the last several versions of Windows, there are many changes for the names and locations of some Windows system folders .

To ensure compatibility with older programs, these older cases have been replaced by The junction Points. A junction Point is designed to redirect programs more alumni who are hard coded to look for the former name of folder for the new file name and the location in Windows.

An example is the C:\Documents and Settings folder. The new name and the location of this folder is C:\Users. In Windows 8, you will see a folder C:\Documents and Settings , but it should be noted that this record contains a shortcut arrow on the folder icon. He identifies it as a junction.

Junction points all than its guarantee of value everyone = access denied.

Note: Do not attempt to modify the security settings on a junction. This can cause programs to stop work and possibly corrupt the file system.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
