    Hi Vanias Reed,

You give it a try, start with the installation of the stand-alone package updates and check if it works. You can download it from the links below:

An update is available for Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant on February 25, 2009

If you are not able to install it by downloading a standalone package, follow these steps:

Step 1: Rename the Catroot2 folder

To rename the Catroot2 folder, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, type cmd in the search box and right-click on cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator.
    2. at the command prompt, type the following commands and press ENTER after each line:

    net stop cryptsvc
    Ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2

    % systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

If any of the files that begin with tmp exist in this folder, do not remove any other files. Files .cat in this folder are necessary for installing hotfixes and service packs.

Important: Do not rename the folder C:\windows\system32\catroot. The Catroot2 folder is automatically recreated by Windows, but the C:\windows\system32\catroot folder is not recreated if is renamed the folder C:\windows\system32\catroot.

Step 2: Reregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services

To register .dll files that are associated with Cryptographic Services, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, type cmd in the search box and right-click on cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator.

    2. at the command prompt, type the following commands and press ENTER after each command:

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the box start the search.
    2. in the area of results, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be asked to type the password for an administrator account. If you are the administrator or type the administrator password, click on continue. Then click on continue.
    3. at the command prompt, type Sfc/scannow, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: The analysis may take some time, so be patient. Windows allows to fix corrupt or missing files it finds. If the information of the installation CD is required to fix the problem, you may be asked to insert your Windows Vista CD.

  • Windows Update error 646 for KB981432 and KB980469 on Vista 64 - bit O.S.

I have Windows Update error 646 when trying to install KB981432 and KB980469 in my Vista 64 bit operating system computer.  This is the first time I've ever had a problem installing Windows updates.  Can you please help?

Subsequently, in a Microsoft forum, I followed the directions to add the registry information in the book below (I copied & pasted the below for Notebook, "recorded under" register.bat on my desktop, then right click on it on my desk & "run as Administrator" and then tried to install, but it did not work):

    REGSVR32 WUPS2. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 STINKS. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 WUAUENG. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 WUAPI. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 WUCLTUX. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 WUWEBV. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 JSCRIPT. DLL/S
    REGSVR32 MSXML3. DLL/S

    Hi Rocketron,

Sometimes patches seem to just have a hard time to proceed with the installation.  I have a fw for to look you at other things.  First of all, your Background Intelligent Transfer Services set to Automaticand started and Windows Update ? You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.

    (1) Download Center to visit Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.
    (2) search for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB979309).
    3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run.  You must accept the agreement and then click on continue.
    (4) repeat this process for each download of updates Windows could not install.
    (5) to rerun the update from Microsoft, click find updates.  If all goes well, it will show that you are completely patched.

If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or erase viruses can prevent the installation of patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

    Good luck

  • c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll - update error 646

I continue to wear on one of my two machines updates failed code 646 for the Office updates. I have questions about c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll versions (and other related files apparently). I have Windows Update set to check and let me decide. I have maintained security using workaround to manually
    Download.

On my desk for c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll, the version is 7.3.7600.16385. This machine is a Dell Inspiron (put into operation in July 2009) with Windows 7 HP 32 (update Vista HP 32 recently), Intel and Office Professional 2003. Properties show that the file has been
created, modified and accessed July 17, 2009. This machine has never had any failure of an update.

On the laptop (Compaq V6508AU) HP version c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll is 7.4.7600.226 - Vista HP 32 (put into operation in September 2007), AMD and Office Professional 2003.  Created and consulted on October 4, 2009, amended August 7, 2009. This machine
a constant codes 646 failure for the Office updates in October, November and December, i.e. after creation and consulted on date.

Is the version on the laptop of the cause of the update error 646? Why the desktop version are previous to the laptop?

I'm just guessing that this problem could be linked to the MSOcache or a related Office registry error only.

Maybe the uninstallation and reinstallation of Office isn't enough (sometimes it was not in the past).

You mention WSUS that is not Windows Update Agent. WSUS is completely different from system update.

Maybe to a certain stage why some have the problem with 646 with office and others are not clearly will some time in the future. At the moment we have only the work around, which is annoying but works.

  • Windows Update error 646 code

How can I get updates to install successfully? Tried to disable security, etc.

    Hey Fabfam,

Check out this article from Microsoft Fixit. I like some provided by microsoft Fixit. He helped a lot of people including me. Moving forward with this article and then try to install the updates.

To get updates Office installed when you receive the error 646, usually download and install them manually will work.  Look at your history of update and get the KB # updates failed.  Then, go to theMicrosoft Download Center, search the KB # and then you download the file to your PC.  Then, simply double-click the file to run it.

Manually download the update and install the same.

A more permanent solution may require the Office relocation/repair a Note (which would require the original as well as the product key media).

The current solution for the updates Office fail with 646 is to download and install the same manually.

I have the problem with this... I couldn't update this update. How can I rectify this?

Sorry, you have problems getting your patches installed. I have a number of things for you to look at.  First of all, your Background Intelligent Transfer Services set to Automaticand started and Windows Update ? You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Since they are all Office updates, you can do a repair for office function.  To do this, click the Start button, type programs and features and click the enter key. Right click on Microsoft Office 2007 and choose change.  Choose fix and continue.  Microsoft Office will attempt to fix any problems there (this will) take a few minutes to run.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.  Here are the links where you can download and run the patch:

    KB976382

    KB981725

If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or can clear the virus that can prevent the installation of the patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

Hope this helps to get your installed patches.

The error is most often the result of malicious programs. It is normally easy to solve the issue of the update. First, however, you should check your computer for malware.

Click HERE. Download Malwarebytes. Update Malwarebytes and perform a scan.  Choose whether to remove anything found. Once completed click HERE and download Superantispyware Portable. Perform a quick scan again remove anything found
