  Can someone please help. My iMac started freezing when I clicked on any application or attempted to open anything. I turned it off the power and then turn it back on.   Before doing all this, what is your status of backup? You have Time Machine or a clone of your hard drive? If this isn't the case, it may be best to do nothing until you are able to see if you can find a way to save your data if things go from bad to worse.

  That said, assuming you are running OSX 10.5.8 (like on your profile) or Snow Leopard (according to the guidelines of this forum), have you tried starting restoring 1 gray disc that came with the Mac or the Snow Leopard installation disc? Insert the startup disk by holding down the c"" key. You may need to push the disc for the CD/DVD drive so that it can swallow the disk when you start if you can't get the Mac to accept the drive in its current state.

  If all goes well it will boot from the gray disk, although slowly. Once started go to the Menu utilities > disk utility. Launch disk utility, select Macintosh HD and click on "repair disk". If changes are made click on repair disk again and repeat until you get a clean pass. Once that is done, try to restart normally in the Apple menu.
