First of all, some "background story":
The old facilities must be uninstalled with their files vcredist.msi of origin before the end of the new facility. Is he missing the old files, .msi, Microsoft Update still believes that the update is successful, which in fact is unfinished, but simply "cancelled successfully. This is the real cause of constantly repeated same updates KB2538242 etc., appear. I had this problem and manually downloaded several vcredist package old version and uninstalled those corresponding to my system, but there is still the KB2467175 one which the download link was dead. In the end, I can't yet to complete installation of the update. Now the questions: why updates must rely on old packages in installation? Why can they not do the job on their own? (That is anyway to work around this problem and more) a reinstallation of the system, or b) hide this update?
Try this if you are using Win XP. Install "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x 86) http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3387. Then run the run the KB2538242 update.
I found all the other 'remedies' MS and others do not work. The problem is the original distribution is damaged or missing and needs to be reinstalled before the update will take. At least, that was my problem and how to solve it.

Windows Update KB2538242; Update icon continues to appear in the taskbar
Good evening
The Windows Update icon continues to stay in my bar tasks, since the update referenced in the subject line was supposed to be available. I went to the Windows Update site, but the info for this particular update indicates the "update of size" is 0 bytes in size, and download time is "0 minutes.»
A couple of days, a MS tech support remotely connected to my pc and supposedly fixed this problem, but returns the Update icon in the taskbar! Someone idea of EVERYTHING happening here and WHEN this problem will be corrected? By checking my "Add/Remove Programs" section in Control Panel (with the show updates check box), I don't see the update above listed anywhere.
Thanks much for any info on this!

It's ALL new for me. I don't know if I'm answering Dena or I answered myself. In any case, I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, IE 9. No remedy online were working. Microsoft Solution Center & Community, no responses. I called Microsoft and got a tech and after 4 hours on the phone, it has been resolved. The tech had to install a program called Revo Uninstaller Pro 2.5.8. A ran this program and then installed Windows Installer. And which clarifies that headache. The problem was that I couldn't install some updates. I kept getting an error code 80070641 and another error code just the number 641.
Now I got another problem, I receive a significant update to install. I installed this update 31 times now and he comes back and it was installed successfully every time. The update is as follows - update of security for Microsoft Visual C ++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242).
