I have a Dell DXP051 tower with Windows XP x 86 Media Center Edition Service Pack 5 (build 2600).  I have two browsers, Google Chrome and IE, which I pass between the two, but especially to use Chrome. I use ESmart 5.2 protection antivirus and Windows Defender. I get a failure of the update message and the error code for all four patches is Ox643.  I recently bought a laptop ASUS with Windows 8 and will begin to use it as my first time I transfer files from my old tower.  But I want to be sure that the tower is virus-free before making the transfer.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

It is a common problem with updates of .NET. Here are the steps I follow

    First try this...

Download and run the Microsoft .NET Framework repair tool , then visit Windows Update and let it try to reinstall updates. Once it's done, scan again with Windows Update to ensure that they properly installed.

If this does not fix it try this...
Try to install the updates manually. Follow the links to the downloads.
    KB2742596 - NDP20SP2-KB2742596 - x 86-.exe
    KB2804577 - NDP20SP2-KB2804577 - x 86-.exe
    KB2833940 - NDP20SP2-KB2833940 - x 86-.exe
    KB2844285 - NDP20SP2-KB2844285-v2 - x 86-.exe

Once you have installed, visit Windows Update, let it scan and see if they are still revived.

If this is not yet it solves, we need to check if you don't have .NET 2.0 or have .NET 2.0 under .NET 3.5. .NET 3.5 installs 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5.

You can check for their presence in Add or remove programs or download .NET detector, a very small, stand-alone program that displays the versions installed in bold.

If you don't have .NET 2.0 can do this...

    Uninstall the .NET Framework 2.0.
    Reinstall .NET Framework 2.0
Visit Windows Update and let it install the rest of the 2.0 updates, including KB2833940 and KB2844285.

See if that makes the problem disappears.

If you have .NET 2.0 as part of a .NET 3.5 installation do that...

Open Add or remove programs, click on .NET 3.5 and choose repair. I didn't get around to check this fix actually .NET 2.0 also, but it's worth it. I do not know if it can also cancel updates already installed .NET. If so, they will reinstall when you perform a Windows update that is the next step after the repair.

If the repair does not fix it, will add and remove programs and uninstall the .NET Framework 3.5, 2.0, then 3.0. It must be done in this order.

Visit Windows Update, choose this first installation and custom scan...

Is not a high priority, it is under the optional software.

It must be installed by itself. Windows Update will not let you do otherwise.

When he did install (I forgot if she asks for a restart or what not), scan again and all updates for .NET 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 of the .NET .NET must appear. Choose to install.
A new analysis to ensure that they properly installed.

If all goes well, that will solve the problems you face.

Make sure you come back and let us know which method worked for you or if you still have problems, I have to run a cleaning tool.

Since it puts in my list of programs updated, is it updated? If so, why he continues to show needing to be installed? I run Windows XP. IE8.

Sorry, it took so long to answer. To answer your questions, no he didn't is not updated and that's why he continues to show. This is a common problem with updates of the .NET Framework.

    Follow these steps:

Download it manually here. Click on download and choose NDP20SP2-KB2804577 - x 86 .exe. Install it and then visit Windows Update and check if it shows as a high priority. If it isn't there, you should no longer be disturbed by it.

If it's still there, follow these steps:

Uninstall .NET Framework 2.0 from Add / Remove programs.
Then download the .NET Framework cleanup tool , unzip it, run it, and in the drop-down list box, select 2.0 and clean.

I worked on it at least a week

    Harry,

The following was extracted a thread earlier on the same exact topic.
(It may be worth your while to find this previous thread get the complete picture).
Step by step that has worked for others similarly vexed was:
Website updates from Microsoft, locate and download the update file: NDP20SP2-KB2804577 - x 86 .exe in a new folder.
Universal use - Extractor.exe by Jared bunking to extract the bits contained in the update file using the extract here option. There are probably many other options of software for extraction, but Universal Extractor is known to work with good results. Universal - Extractor.exe lie on filehippo.com
In these pieces just extracted was file: NDP20SP2 - KB2804577.msp
Option to use universal Extractor again NDP20SP2 - KB2804577.msp to extract a second level of bits to help extract here. (maybe type q to Quit in a pop-up cmd window when it has finished this step.)
In these extra bits was the file: FL_System_Security_dll___X86.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8
Rename: FL_System_Security_dll___X86.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8 to System.Security.dll (which is the version 2.0.50727.3646)
Replace: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\System.Security.dll with this new version of the System.Security.dll
(You can keep a copy of the old System.Security.dll somewhere, first, just in case)
Delete all the remaining bits extracted and restart.
No guarantees, but these are the steps that worked for me and others to eliminate the cycle without end of update for KB2804577 requests.

    SOLVED!

This can be the long way - about doing it, but it worked for me and all my Windows updates are installed without problem!

    Step 1 a) download "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip" from: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=27e6a35d1a492af7&id=27E6A35D1A492AF7%21390

Step 1b) download "Piriform CCleaner" from: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

Step 1 c) create a file batch and place the following content between the - in the program:

    ---

    off @echo

    CLS

    net stop wuauserv
    CD /d % windir %
    RD/q/s C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    net start wuauserv
    ---

    This program will be:

    (A) stop the Windows Update Service

    (B) clear the Windows Update Cache

    (C) restart the Windows Update Service

Step 2) run the "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool" and select (.NET Framework - Versions) and select "Cleanup Now". This will remove all the facilities of the .net Framework.

Step 3a) install and run "CCleaner". Use the registry cleaner to remove all residual traces of .net Framework from the system registry.

Step 3b) use the "cleaner" to remove Windows additional cached files.

Step 4) run the batch program you created using the orders listed above.

Step 5) run Windows Update and reinstall .net Framework (and its updates).

I strongly suggest you allow updates Windows select the .net Framework order must be installed. Change this order may cause additional problems.

    Good luck to all!

It is a common problem with updates of .NET. Here are the steps I follow

    First try this...

Download and run the Microsoft .NET Framework repair tool , then visit Windows Update and let it try to reinstall updates. Once it's done, scan again with Windows Update to ensure that they properly installed.

If the above does not make it...

Open Add or remove programs, click on .NET 3.5 and choose repair. I got around to test if this fix actually .NET 2.0 and 3.0 of the .NET also, but it's worth it. I do not know if it can also cancel updates already installed .NET. If so, they will reinstall when you perform a Windows update that is the next step after the repair.

If the repair does not fix it, will add and remove programs and uninstall the .NET Framework 3.5, 2.0, then 3.0.
Visit Windows Update, select Custom scan and under software, optional install this...

    Good luck!
