Kernel is missing or corrupt error starting of Windows 7 Setup DVD

I am trying to boot from an Installation DVD of Windows 7 (64-bit). It starts and loads the files, then briefly shows "Starting Windows" before stopping with:

File: \windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Status: 0xc0000221

Kernel is missing or damaged

The internal HARD disk is not bootable, and I tried to reinstall Windows. If I enter the start menu and run the hardware the CPU, HDD diagnostic tests, CHIP and memory tests are passed everything is OK.

I know that you can often correct this type of error by running the repair of the system, but since I can't even boot from the installation DVD is not an option.

Any suggestions as to what is the cause and how can I solve it?

Thank you

I managed to solve this problem. I was able to get the system to boot from a Windows 10 installation DVD and could then access the HARD disk. I couldn't install Windows in the main partition, so I deleted all 3 partitions on the disk. I was able to boot from the Windows 7 USB installation and do a fresh install on the drive successfully. It seems that the problem was caused by some kind of corruption on the HARD disk.

    \Windows\system32\ntkrnlpa.exe

I use Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on 70 GB primary partition & active with appropriate MBR.  It is not the consumer - it is installed on the laptop.  After the repair broken BCD (Windows 7 installation DVD, DVD server doesn't have this tool :() this problem.) I know that this (ntkrnlpa.exe) file does not exist, and it should not. System could not start any mode (even Safe Mode base).

The disc is perhaps the problem because PARAGON Hard Disk Manager 2011 has problems with the editing of this partition but it it sails well (as other tools). The files seems good. Also, CHKDSK has not found no serious problems such as bad sectors - it fixed only tiny problems.

  • XP machine does not start, vgaoem.fon missing or corrupt error

Machine was shut down normally, but now we are getting the following error:

    \windows\system\vgaoem.FON.

You can try to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original

installation CD-ROM. Select 'r' in the first screen to start repair.

We have the configuration or the Start Menu, however is the only CD that we have CD of resettlement supplied with the machine.  How can we fix this?

We went through the 315338 article - but no bootable disk.

I would love to follow the instructions, but the cd supplied with the machine (Dell) is to reinstall Windows only.  We are unable to boot from it.

Dells make it easy to start with the bootable CD. All you need to do is press F12 as soon as you turn on the PC. Then you will see a screen that looks like this:

    http://ImageShack.us/photo/my-images/70/bootdevicemenu2wz.PNG/

Select the option for IDE CD-ROM device.

Then, when you see this screen:

Make sure you do exactly that! (Here, press any key on the keyboard so that you boot YOU from CD).

  • NTOSKRNL. EXE missing or corrupt error at startup

It is a Win XP SP3 on an HP Pavilion PC

The subject error occurs at startup.

I can start the test software of HP on the hard drive and run it tells me that the HD is functional.  Software test done HP report a problem with the HD and said that a recovery is not recommended.

I rebooted and started from C/D and entered the Recovery Console.  I ran CHKDSK/r, and he reported no problems.  I ran CHKDSK C: /R and he ran up to 50% and then remained there overnight continued to access the HD but no sign of progress.

If I do a folder on drive H: (recovery partition) it responds very well.

If I do a DIR on C: command I get "an error occurred during directory enumeration"

The basis of Microsoft Support has an article covering this on Win 2000 but not XP.  And the suggested fixes don't seem to apply.

Any thoughts on what file in the partition C: could have been destroyed and how can I fix it?

    1. I will read up on FSUTIL.  This would be executed on the command RUN under start?

2 - the file that you are referring to is $UsnJrnl to the root?  Also what $LogFile in the root?

    3 - CHKDSK no a/p and / r as params.

1 - Fsutil is run at the command prompt, to start a session prompt type cmd in the box run from the start menu.  If you get a message telling you that the change journal is not active then the USN journal is not the cause of your problems, that the change log not being active is normal, the change log is not a required data structure, and it is not enabled on all machines.  The newspaper is generally enabled by services such as indexing or some AV programs and backup utilities.  See here for more help on the command: Fsutil: usn

2 - Yes, the USN Journal is $UsnJrnl.  Contrary to the $UsnJrnl the $LogFile is an important data structure that is present on all NTFS volumes, it is a transaction log file used to ensure recovery from file system.  It is not recommended that you are the NTFS metadata files, alteration of these data structures can damage or destroy the file system.

3 - CHKDSK no a/p and / r in the Recovery Console, but in a Windows session normal la/f, / v, / r/x, / I, / c and / switches are available.  The /f switch is equivalent to the switch/p recovery console, mounted as a volume of data, you will be able to run one of the switches above on the volume during a normal Windows session.

For you tell the truth, my feeling is that the MFT is corruption, and that the chances are slim that the USN journal is at fault, but you should always delete and see if things improve before you use the formatting the drive.

  • How to fix the error message 'bad image logoui.exe error' starting in windows vista?

I have windows vista installed on my hp laptop. I used it for at least a year until a few months ago, I started to meet this error message at startup:
"LogonUIexe-Bad Image C:\Windows\system32\HID.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try to install the program with the help of original installation media or contact your software support provider or system administrator."
Is anyone having this problem. Please provide a cure.

    Hello sheritaG,

Run The System File Checker utility:

To determine if the problem you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool analyzes the system files and replaces incorrect versions of system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the box start the search .
    2. Right-click cmd in the programs list and then click run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click continue
    3. To order invites, the following line and press ENTER: sfc/scannow (Yes there is a space after sfc)

This analysis may take some time to complete. When the analysis is complete, test to see if the problem you are experiencing is resolved. Hope this helps you. Let us know anyway. Make it a great day!

Do not install an operating system is usually caused by (in order of probability):

    1. you are trying to install with other devices connected to the computer. Unplug them before trying to make an installation.

    2. "" "" defective installation media. "" Check the CD/DVD installation for scratches, tasks. Try another machine.

    3. bad optical drive. Test with another CD/DVD bootable or Exchange for a well-known work.

    4. faulty RAM. Test with Memtest86 + www.memtest.org . You will download the .iso image file to create a bootable cd. Burn the file with the third party burning software *-as an image, not in the form of data. Then start with the media that you did (you may need to change the boot priority in your BIOS so that the optical drive is the first boot device). The test runs immediately. The test run for an hour or two--at least that errors are seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM.

    * It is not necessary to have a third party burning software in Windows 7 since Win7 natively allows to burn an .iso. Other operating systems require it. A good free choice ImgBurn comes from www.imgburn.com .

    5. bad hard drive. Test with a diagnostic utility downloaded from site of the disc mftr... You create a bootable CD with the files you download. Burn the file with a third-party burning software (unless you have Windows 7, that allows to record the .isos natively) - as an image, not in the form of data. Boot with the CD that you have done and do a full test of the reader. The physical tests fail, replace it.

    6. other hardware components are faulty. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

    System:

    Toshiba Satellite A-75

    WIndows XP Home Edition
Fully updated with Svc Pk 3
HITACHI Travelstar hard drive 80 gig

    Nice day

I'm getting this ' file is missing or damaged:------WINDOWS-SYSTEM32-CONFIG-SYSTEM ' error and Windows does not start in the F8 boot options. When I disable the auto reboot, I get a BSOD 51 registry error, consistent with the file "missing or corrupt" error Surprisingly "Recovery Console" works so I used to run chkdsk. This has not solved the problem, but even once, surprisingly, the utility reported no fixed error. Ok. I do research online (using another computer of course) and check out the many tips that I copy some files in my "c:\windows\repair" folder in the folder 'system '. Before I had time to do that, however, I found an article from Microsoft stating that this should not be done if you have an OEM System... what I'm doing. Apparently, hives system on these OEM installed OS set other passwords that can permanently block you on your records if you use this method. Thanks for the warning. My system restore disc is nothing more than a tool of re-insall OS that will wipe all my data in the process, and this is not desirable. Currently, I see again all my data on the drive by using the "recovery console". I'm ready to thread the needle on this one in the hope of re - access the operating system, although in some limited capacity. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you run chkdsk in RC, did you use the /r switch? This is the key! In other words, this should be the command:

    Chkdsk /r

(there is a space before the slash)

Moreover, KB307545 can be run safely on most OEM XP installations. Of course, nothing is guaranteed 100%.

Before you do this or else, you really must ensure all data is stored safely. One way to do this is to start on a live Linux CD and then copy the files to an external hard drive. Another way is to connect the problem hard drive into a working PC and copy the files in this way. This could be done by the servo drive or with an adapter like this:
