  You can override how the links are opened through the browser.link.open_newwindow.override preference.

• Why can't I open new tabs in my toolbar like I usually do?

  I have google as my homepage, I have my email and my facebook as a PIN in the toolbar, and for awhile, I open other tabs check school email and things on my page of e-learning for the school.   I also suggest you update to the latest version of Firefox, but the reset Firefox functionality can resolve many issues in restaurant Firefox to its factory default condition while saving your vital information.
  
  Note: This will make you lose all the Extensions and preferences.

  To reset Firefox, perform the following steps:

I have the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" together, I use the addon of Tree Style Tab 0.14.2012111201 (and other unrelated tabs or windows), and I have several profiles. It seems that since I started to use several profiles some programs (help of MediaMonkey, for instance) insist on opening a new window of Firefox. If I select one or several profiles currently open it says "Current usage profile". Some programs who want to open a website to view their help files open a tab in the current browser, as window expected and desired. But most programs cause choose it display a profile box.

  Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the - No.-remote switch or have defined the MOZ_NO_REMOTE = 1 environment variable (Control Panel > system > advanced > environment variables).

  If you need to have several open profiles at the same time then start the following instances with the - no - remote line switch.
  
  You can't send links from other programs to a Firefox instance that is started with the - non-interrupteur to distance.

And then other times we seem to be an arbitrary limit, say 5 tabs, and then each new tab opens a new window. No external link opens in a new window, a Ctrl + t opens in a new window, all new windows are the only image, for example, you can have a number of windows each tell 5 tabs, just the original (for example) window 5 and then a series of windows with only unique pages in each, and which Ctrl + t doesn't open a new window.

  A full restart sometimes heals things and I can go back to have different pages in different tabs and then something... without obvious motive... launch us in the "new window only" mode after what even if I reduce the number of tabs in the original window many tabs, Ctrl + t opens only new windows.
