  No, because the limiting factor is the computer is USB 2.0, which is how it connects any external drive apart the external drive. As USB 2.0 is much slower, there is no real advantage to a 7200 RPM drive. What you need is a Firewire enclosure that supports FW800 which is much faster than USB 2.0.

  I did a clean install of Sierra on my iMac late 2009, 3.60 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, the 12 GB of RAM, a 1 TB drive, ATI graphics card. Everything seemed to happen. Now, I have two problems:

  1. at least twice daily than the iMac just hangs. The mouse moves, but can not select anything. Cmd - Tab will not pass applications. Keyboard does not respond. All I can say is that I always Mail, Safari, & Open Office 4.1.2 running. Have to hold the power button to turn off and restart.

  2. at the end of the day, when I stopped, the process is not finished and I just get a black screen (computer for desktop is black, but the items on the desktop are not visible), with the only docking station. Still, the only way out seems to be to hold down the power button to turn off.

  Anyone else having these issues? Is it that I can save for a clean install of Yosemite that worked perfectly before?

I tried to restore an iMac 2009 end to the factory setting but I don't have the original disc, apple support said I could try the disk of snow leopard on their Web site, but this may not work and he didn't now I'm stuck in the boot OSX disc and cannot remove the disc or do hard recovery by pressing the command and r at the beginning.  I managed to erase the drive hard all the time, were not able to reinstall OS x.

  Recovery of the Internet only is not supported on iMacs 2009. Snow Leopard retail disk should work as I believe version 10.6.3 and end of 2009 iMacs come with 10.6.2. What happens when you try to install from the disc of detail? Your last resort may be to call Apple, give them your serial number and order a set of replacement original discs.

  I have a 21.5 "iMac, 3.06 GHz Core 2 duo with a SSD and 8 GB of RAM. The video card is the NVIDIA GeForce 9400 with 256 MB of VRAM. Is it possible with this model, to level or replace the GPU at all? May not deal at all with Final Cut Pro. I use El Capitan.

  Otherwise, I'll continue to use my MacBook Pro with Radeon R9, but I would if it had a better GPU.
