Local VMs of shared storage

I have ESXi free license and create several virtual machines production in the local data store of ESXi, we complete installing vCenter server and add this host, proceed to the storage configuration and connect the ESXi too, we get the new vSphere license Enterprise liked.

Someone would tell me how to move the virtual machines in the local data store of ESXi for shared storage, we need constantly to these machines, please?

Best regards

With the Enterprise Plus license, that you can live migrate virtual machine to a new storage. All you have to do to be able to use "Storage VMotion" is to ensure that the ESXi hosts have access to the shared storage. Take a look at for example http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2009/04/02/storage-vmotion-exploring-the-next-version-of-esxvcenter/ which has a screen shots, how it works.

  • move VMs from the local shared storage

We are running ESXi 4.1 with local storage that we did experiments with VMware. Close have 2 new purchased hosts with a SAN for the shared storage, hopefully, they will arrive at the end of January. I need to build a couple of virtual machines to take care of a few issues until our new VM environment is set up. If I create a new virtual machine on my host with local storage and that you want to move to new hosts and the shared storage the arrival of our new purchase, I guess I can do it with vMotion? Other methods too? Also, is there anything I need to worry as move us VMS local shared storage storage and a new host of ramifications?

Thanks for helping a newbie, Tom

You will need Enterprise or Enterprise Plus access to Storage vMotion. vMotion moves a virtual machine from one host to the host running but no storage.

  • Can VMs on clustered storage use?

I have install a cluster on ESX 3.5 and experience some SAN LUNS available (as shared on a Clariion AX4-5 storage). Virtual machines currently use local storage to each host in the cluster and they were previously separate hosts but I grouped in a cluster recently. My plan is to migrate VMs for storing shared little by little, as I'm not sure if SAN Bay can manage all virtual machines, without there being issues with degradation IO (I'm imagining 20 Windows operating system running a variety - it may be good but it seems to me that there could be performance problems). I intend to have HA and DRS working on this cluster (possibly - at the moment they are not enabled). I currently have 16 VMs Windows through host 2. The majority of these servers are servers of file/application for general purposes; There are a few small DBs and a low load Citrix server, but they will have huge needs IO. One of the virtual machines will be the new main file server so will have random reads/writes, but should not be too heavy.

Some of the virtual machines are not mission critical and not really need HA and I plan to keep the latter on the local storage if possible to maintain the highest possible IO for important servers. I plan to move virtual machines from shared storage one and then make sure that there are no obvious performance problems.

What would be the best way to do this? I keep some virtual machines on the local storage and the best way to configure the cluster/VMs for this? If I can isolate each VM cluster parameters, etc. ?

    Any tips will be appreciated.

    See you soon,.

    Tim

P.S. I'm worrying unecessarily on SAN i/o performance?

Yes, they can be in a cluster and use local storage - but just make sure that you disable HA for this virtual machine in the by the parameters of the virtual machine and do the same for the SRD if DRS is enabled

  • Upgrade and migration of 3.5.0upd0 to 4.0upd1 and shared storage iSCSI

    Hi people,

I've got 2 ESX host: Alpha and beta. Two of them are connected to a cabin of iSCSI with some created shared storage drive (all VMFS3 v3.31). And both had ESX 3.5.0 update0

I migrated all the VMS running in the Alpha host for shared storage and made host Beta to run (clones cold or simply reassign files). Then I bâtait Alpha from scratch and I installed vSphere 4.0 in it. I also created in its local storage space bit a new virtual machine with vCenter4 inside. It has worked well.

Then I had to migrate Beta and its virtual machines, too. I first tried to manage the host with vCenter4, but it is not backward compatible.

So I'll use the host update utility to upgrade beta I saw in a video tutorial, but my doubts are...

        • Option 1:

Disable all virtual machines managed in host Beta.

Configure the iSCSI client in Alpha, add storage shared cabin and try to manage the virtual machines already extinct. This reduces the time to downgrade.

Upgrade Vmware Tools in the virtual machines (v4 to v7 type VM). Required reboots.

Upgrade host Beta (with no SMV in there and unplug the cable of iSCSI) vSphere4.

Connect and configure the iSCSI version beta customer.

Manage the host with the new vCenter4 Beta.

Configure the vMotion, DRS etc. in both hosts.

        • Option 2:

Disable all virtual machines managed in host Beta.

Upgrade host Beta (with no SMV in there and unplug the cable of iSCSI) vSphere4. Downgrade time increases.

Connect and configure the iSCSI version beta customer.

Upgrade Vmware Tools in the virtual machines (v4 to v7 type VM). Required reboots.

Manage the host with the new vCenter4 Beta.

Configure the vMotion, DRS etc. in both hosts.

Which option is the best? Maybe is it possible to apply a third? What do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

    without loss of performance?

Yes. VM with v4 works very well.

The only problem is that you lose some new features, like the new drivers and FT.

Note also that Standalone VMware Converter 4.x can also convert between v4 and v7 and vice versa.

  • Migrate virtual machines from HP G7(single host) for HP G8 (Cluster) without shared storage

    Hello

I have 2 esxi host (hp dl 380 G8) and put them in a cluster and other host esxi (dl 380 g7) and I have no shared storage and use local disks just now I must spend my VM G7 server a cluster of the G8 but I want to know I can join my cluster g8 g7 and migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

I want to know can migrate without downtime with localdisk? I have no shared storage

    Best regards

can I join g7 to my cluster of the g8

You can mix into clusters hosts all desired, even Intel and AMD at least that you enable EVC on the cluster (of course, HA or DRS require shared storage compatible/CPU). However, you need not to have even just cluster hosts to migrate virtual machines through vMotion between them.

migrate web vmware machines without any downtime?

Don't know what this "web vmware' but yes, because ESXi 5.1, you can use"enhanced vMotion"to live migrate virtual machines without service interruption from one host to another, even without shared storage:

Migration with vMotion in environments without shared storage

The usual vMotion requirements apply. Also you can only live migrate virtual machines from the old host to the new hosts because of different generations of CPU (and back as long as you don't have bike powered virtual machines on new hosts).

  • Two servers vCenter and shared storage

    Hi all

Is it possible to have two vCenter environment, vCenter 5.1 and 5.5 vCenter and each vcenter has two esxi hosts to vCenter 5.1 a 5.1 host esxi and vCenter 5.5 has esxi hosts.

All four hosts to access the same shared storage (SAN).

VCenter hosts different access to the shared storage will damage the virtual machines on storage?

    Thank you...

Essentially access a data store from multiple hosts that are running different versions. However, in the case of these hosts are not managed by the same server vCenter Server, it is your responsibility to ensure that guests will not access the same VMs (records) system and maximum supported are not outdated storage vMotion tasks, for example simultaneous for a data store...

Also don't forget that functions like the control of storage i/o may not work as expected.

  • vSphere 6 FT cannot yet compensate for shared storage takedown?

    Hello

a few questions about the PI with vsphere 6.0 — we just noted this in the test lab:

    (a) is it true that the 'source' vm where you want to enable IP MUST be on shared storage? because it seems that way.

As you mentioned in the documents, it is now possible to locate the storage for the target on a separate storage VMDK (this can also be a non-shared storage just seen by the target host).

Now the second question: we ft´t just a machine (source on the shared storage, target on a local storage of target esxi. Bootet, installed the virtual machine just cool. Each host may die - all cool.

NOW, we killed the shared storage of laboratory. We wondered: Hmmmm... OK... If the second host the vmdk and both hosts have the namespace and the vmx why not keep the virtual machine running on the target storage? But what we saw was disappointing: the protected virtual machine became unresponsive. Is this expected behavior? The new ft cannot lose the shared storage?

    Best regards

    Joerg

Unfortunately, FT in vSphere 6 still relies on storage shared for the tiebreaker file and source VMX file and other functions.

  • Using the odd drive with shared storage

We have deployed a 15-node cluster with shared storage.  When we issue a df - h, we see the root filesystem and / mnt mounted file systems.

We also see the file of each of the other systems the datanodes on the local storage of the each other.  For example...

/ mnt/SCSI-123abc is mounted on the server server01

    / mnt/SCSI-456def is mounted on server02

Under/mnt on the server server01, we also see/mnt/scsi-456def under the root file system, not mounted as its own file system.

Under/mnt on server02, we also see/mnt/scsi-123abc under the root file system, not mounted as its own file system.

Is this a problem of storage configuration, or is this something that the BDE has decided when it deployed?

    Thank you

    Steve

BTW, you can add your script hack or the scripts that I have provided in the /opt/serengeti/sbin/format-disk.py file in the node template, and then after that the empty cluster is created, the mount point/mnt/bigdata1... are there the/mnt/bigdataN.

  • VMotion for one HA cluster to another - no shared storage

I was trying to vmotion that two hosts and clusters of data from a virtual computer store between HA (no shared storage). The web client gives me this warning and I'm curious to know what he is talking about:

    **

If this is done, the virtual machine will lose vSphere HA protection. If you proceed with this operation and it completes successfully, vSphere HA not will try to restart the virtual machine after a subsequent failure. vSphere HA protection is restored when network partitions or disk accessibility problems are solved...

    **

HA is working in two groups, in terms of network and the heartbeat data store. So what exactly this message tells me thank you!

I get the same warning when turf migrate a virtual machine between two clusters and I select the source host unreachable destination data store. If I select a store different data that is shared by the two poles of competitiveness, no warning appears.

This warning is probably up for the vMotion suppose it will stay within the same cluster and check if the source host and destination can access the same data store. As the store of data (and config agent HA) is not shared between your source and destination hosts residing in different groups, it seems that the vMotion compatibility check guess it's a store of local data or something like that.

However, once migrated to the new cluster, FDM HA agents should choose the new VM place very well and protect it according to your settings in cluster HA, so nothing to worry about here.

  • shared storage

Hi everyone, iam configuration lab and I need shared storage

I want to know if I can share a Director on one of my servers esxi and use it as a shared storage

    mmjaboor wrote:

How to make a server esxi storage shared among other esxi servers

You mean like we use openfile on a windows or linux box to provied storage lun with free space on them, like that on ESXi.

TAT is then not possible. But still, you can create a virtual machine set up all the storage, installing openfile or starwind, from there, you can give access to shared another esxi storage.

    or

    Installing vcenter

    create the cluster

every 2 or 3 esxi, who owns the local data store.

now install vmware storage appliance - through you can make use of all the local data store to be shared across all the esxi.

See the link on vmware storage appliance with vsphere novelty 5 below. :-

  • Free/busy options high, with no shared storage

Here is a little history on our Setup. CurrentY we run vmware server 2.0 on centos 5.4 on both servers in a data center to remove. Currently, what we are doing is a manual process to a level of poormans HA. We create a snapshot of the virtual machine (sometimes) and you use rsync to synchronize the virtual machine on the other server. Each server has 2 mirrored disks and disk 1 not mirrored. If each server synchronizes the reader not mirrored.

I have a key for the company left, I wonder what would be my options for maximum availability with the two servers and HA. We would like to have the opportunity to have HA and FT, but the shared storage is not an option right now.

    Thank you!

All VMware high availability options require a shred storage.

You can create virtual shared storage on warehouses of local data (updated mirror network) with the Virtual SAN PHDVirtual, HP Lefthand VSA or StarWind iSCSI.

  • Share resources between the 2 ESX 4.0 hosts without shared storage

    Hello guys,.

I have the following question, I want to clarify.

Imagine that we have 2 host ESX 4.0 with more functional license acquired (HA, VMotion, DRS, etc.)

The two physical servers are identical. Don t have access to any kind of shared storage (San, no iSCSI, NAS no, etc.)

In host #1 I installed all the virtual machines using local storage.

Is it posible to use the host #2 resources (memory and CPU) to give more power to accommodate #1.

My doubt is if it is posible to have a VM installed in local HD in home #1 and using RAM or / and CPU host # 2.

Just do a cluster between the two hosts to empower the host #1 resources (not use DRS or functions of Vmotion)

Let me know if I explained in a good way or not.

Hope someone can clarify this for me.

    Thanks in advance

It is not possible, even if you have the shared storage.

There is no possibility that allows you access to CPU and memory of 2 resources different hosts.

    See you soon,.
