Mac OS recognizes NTFS as ExFAT

I have an external HD 2 TB with two partitions one for Time Machine and one for Windows, NTFS-formatted. However, my MacBook recognizes the latter as ExFAT, shows that "System Volume Information" and "$RECYCLE." BIN", but not the other files I wrote in Windows and allows writing on the partition as ExFAT! At the same time when I boot on Windows 10, it shows the partition in NTFS and doesn't show any file system ('.) Spotlight-V100 «» (Trashes"and".fseventsd"), written by Mac OS. It's been a little weird and I think that Mac OS damage my data on an NTFS partition.

I have the latest version of El Capitan 10.11.3 and Windows 10.

FWIW, OSX can only read NTFS drives natively is not possible to 'damage' an NTFS partition. OS x can read and write to a partition ExFAT. OSX will not confuse the two.

  • My external hard drive has changed its Mac format to NTFS by itself. If anyone else has experienced this?

I would post screenshots, but I'm currently back up backup (lol) my hard drive to another drive so I can reformat the drive. Anyway, today I plugged my Toshiba Caniva 1 TB external to some organization. I went to delete something (Cmd + delete) and nothing happened. So, I tried to drag and drop it into the basket and received a message saying that the file cannot be removed. It's weird, I thought. So, I open disk utility and discover that my external hard drive has decided to change to NTFS on its own. I tried to eject and reconnect it - that did not work. I tried to restart - which did not work. I thought that my USB hub could be a problem - nope. The only things that have changed since I last used my outside is that I changed the battery in my MacBook, put in an SSD and upgraded to El Capitan. I don't see how one of these could cause this but I thought I would mention it. Anyone who has something similar happens? Thank you.

The reader not to not reformat in NTFS. If the disk has been reformatted would vanish all your data. I suspect that before you upgrade to El Capitan you ran a third party app that would allow you to use NTFS formatted disk. Once you upgrade to El Capitan the app is no longer compatible with your new operating system. You must download and install an upgraded version of your application that supports El Capitan. Or, you can copy all data from the disk and reformat then for your Mac.

  • Anyone know how to get my mac to recognize my new iphone in itunes?

I just new iphone 6 s.  Try to connect to itunes and it does not recognize phone saying itunes is not common.  I have the download in progress, so I don't know why it does not recognize.  It recognizes very well my iphone 4S.  Any help appreciated.

    Burkaholic,

You will need to update your operating system to use the latest version of iTunes with your iPhone 6 s.

Requires the latest version of iTunes:

    • OS X version 10.8.5 or later, Apple music requires OS X version 10.9.5 or later
    • 400 MB of available disk space
    • Apple music, Radio Music from Apple, iTunes in the cloud and iTunes game availability may vary depending on the country
    • iTunes Extras requires OS X version 10.10.3 or later

  • Cannot get Mac to recognize the external hard drive

try to get my CD on iTunes, bought a new external hard drive which worked flawlessly for 30 CD then nothing, iTunes does not seem to recognize when I put a CD in. Replaced the hard drive but no improvement.

I can always migrate songs of a laptop.

I'm confused. By "hard drive" do you mean "optical drive"?  I don't know how you get a CD to a hard drive.

Do you mean in your iTunes library?  iTunes is the application itself which opens libraries. You can't get a CD on/in/at the inside of/etc, iTunes.

  • CS4 all apps are broken when opening and Mac cannot recognize the installation CD to reinstall.

All my CS4 Design Suite applications are breaking when opening. In addition, my Mac won't let me not uninstall to reinstall as my G5 Mac OS 10.4.11 will not identify anything much with Adobe products. I use these apps (legal originals) since January 09 without problem. Recently received an InDesign file to a PC user who must have been corrupted that he started to crash InDesign. Now, everything crashes. Help!

You probably don't want to publish your personal information in your posts.

A PC virus are not likely a Mac. I don't even have anti-virus software.

because the software does not work in an account there are 2 possibilities. We know its not corrupted prefs because a new account did not work. We not have some other corruption in the user account. so we narrowed it down to the software or the operating system. If it was the applications one or two of them should work. so I'd say it's something to do with the system.

My next step would be to do an Archive and install of the operating system then update. In this way, you keep all your settings and applications but install a new system and a user account. If that's not it I would reinstall the Creative Suite.

  • Not able to recognize the Mac external HARD drive in Windows 7?

Anyone have any suggestions on how to access this Ext HDD in Windows 7?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

I don't know why someone marked the message confused and imprecise by Ganesh B aissa as response - please fix this.
In any case, perhaps this will help you-

For OS X native file system is HFS +, it is unreadable by Windows natively.   If the drive is formatted in HFS + you might be able to read with tools 3rd party.
    See a here-
    http://www.PCAdvisor.co.UK/how-to/Windows/3369574/how-read-Mac-OS-HFS-drives-in-Windows-for-free/

In general, if you plan to use an external hard drive on a PC and MAC, it may be preferable to use the FAT32 format which support two operating systems.

  • Hard drive Mac and PC compatibility

Hi, I just bought a new MacBook Pro that runs on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.5. The computer I used before is a Dell XPS 13 10 Windows running. I have a 1 external Toshiba Canvio Slim ii hard drive to keep everything. I know that, so that my hard drive Toshiba be compatible with the new OS X, it must be formatted, but I will be losing all my data (260 GB total). I want to know if this option works for me:

I bought a LaCie 1 TB hard drive Portable Porsche Design with my new computer. Am I able to format my LaCie hard drive to have read/write on PC and Mac, then after it is formatted successfully, I plug it into my Dell with my Toshiba hard drive computer, drag and drop my data from my hard drive to my drive Toshiba hard LaCie (using my computer Dell Windows), and then have everything on my LaCie hard drive ready to be read or written on my new MacBook Pro (Mac) and on my Dell XPS (PC)?

If not, what are my other options?

My main goal is to be able to use one of these hard drives on my Mac and PC without having all my data erased. The trick is to get one of these drives compatible to use for my Mac and PC if I need to turn off the power from one to the other without losing my data. In addition, I want to be able to have all of my data stored on these drives ONE and not both. I want all in one place, rather than in two separate places.

    Thank you

    Ramin

Windows in your Dell himself player will be in NTFS format. Standard a Mac can read NTFS but cannot format or write on NTFS. I have no idea what format the Lacie will come initially as, but for arguments sake lets say it will be HFS + which is the standard format used by Macs. Like standard Windows can't read or write disks HFS +.

It is possible to format a hard drive on a Mac (or PC) as a format ExFAT. This format is readable and writable by Mac and PC. It cannot be used as a startup disk either on, or can it be used as a Time Machine backup of Mac disk. ExFAT is however very well to use as a disk transfer.

It is possible to get additional software for the Mac to put into shape and the read/write to NTFS volumes. See https://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

It is possible to get additional software for Windows to allow it to format and write to HFS volumes +. Seehttp://www.mediafour.com/software/macdrive/

Seagate, a maker of hard drives made a deal with Paragon Software as listed above. This agreement means a disk Seagate comes already formatted in NTFS and includes a copy of 'free' the Paragon on all your Mac software to read and write on this NTFS drive. See http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/ntfs-driver-for-mac-os-maste r - dl /

I'd be a little worried about the above 'free' copy of Paragon Software in that a) is it still news?, and b) is the version of the software up to date so that it still works in El Capitan on a Mac. Older versions of the software will not work in El Capitan.

A different approach, you might consider using "Migration Wizard" of Apple software to transfer files over a computer network between Macs and Windows PCs. See move your data from a Windows PC to Mac - Apple Support and the Migration of Windows Wizard v1.0.5.7 the concern here is that this tool does not appear to have been updated for Windows 10, it may or may not work so in Windows 10.

  • Re format ntfs drive?

    Hi all

I found a 320 GB NTFS drive usb3 "Bipra' mark on amazon for £24.  Sounds like all the rest and mac to format those are double this price or usb2 only. They get good reviews, as they seem to contain some Seagate drives.  Can I get this one and just re - format? That would save me quite a quid.  As Mac can't read the NTFS (apparently) can they still reformat them?

    Ta

    Granger

Mac can read NTFS disks but impossible, without software, to write about them. Yes, you can use disk utility to reformat the drive Mac OS Extended journaled. If you intend to drive must be bootable OS x, you will also need to partition (a single partition is very well) by using the GUID partition scheme.
