manage snapshots of models

Hello

I was wondering something about the lifecycle of snapshots...

When I create new VDi, I use a snapshot of a model.

When I made some changes on the model I should do another snapshot. And then computers Reprovisionning...

But if I do not keep snapshot intermediate, I can't take them off because of vmware linked clone...
Do you keep all your interlmediates shots or do you have workarounds?

Thank you...

A.

When I get to about 3 or 4 shots I have clone with a new virtual computer model, and then back into service since the new model/snapshot. Replenished after all, I have the old model of unlock and delete it.

Another thing that I do, it is a virtual machine that I use just for set up and update, then clone to another virtual machine to use for vWorkspace, this way you can have your model with snapshot on multiple LUNS.

I can't find a way to discover the hard drives associated with a snapshot of a model.

I can do it with a virtual machine easily enough.  I tried to use Get-model, Get-Snapshot and Get-hard drive but no avail.

Could someone post a code showing how it's done?

    Thank you very much

Try something like this, which should give you snapshots of model details.

    &{foreach($template in Get-Template){
        if($template.ExtensionData.LayoutEx.Snapshot){
          $fileTab = @{}

  • Snapshot Manager, snapshot merging to parent disk tree

    Hi all

first post here, so I hope that I have the right format.

I use vmware player v3.1 to play a virtual machine created by a work of contract on workstation v6 +.

Unfortunately, it was created with the settings as there seems to be multiple vmdk files, and snapshot files. I want to merge snapshots to the parent disk so that I can use vdisk Manager (downloaded vdisk dev kit) to manipulate the disk. After Google search, it seems that I need something called Manager snapshots. I don't think that reader has this tool. where can I get this snapshot Manager? or is there another to do what I need?

    TIA!

    VMware-vdiskmanager - r "disc - 000001.vmdk" t 0 "consolidated.vmdk".

use full paths - it would create a new drive that is the result of the current snapshot merged parent

I'm afraid this is the best you can do with what the vMA builtin tools offer, unless you write custom perl scripts using the viperltoolkit (comes with the vMA).

The vMA was always intended as a sort of CLI of ESX (i) local centralized to manage the hosts and virtual machines through commands supported (esxcfg-* / vicfg-*, esxcli etc.), which are also available on a local host ESX (i); with the advantage that it is centralized and you don't have to enable SSH on your guests every time.

More advanced things like management of VMS (apart from basic start/stop etc.) must be done through the standard API applications as the vSphere Client (Web) (with vCenter), PowerCLI scripting or other APIs such as the viperltoolkit.

  • [SOLVED] Help: Snapshot showing is not in Manager snapshots, but 0000002.vmdk always in the vicinity

    Hello community,

Here's the problem: one of our most important servers (Windows 2008 R2, Exchange 2010) got a software update, so we used clichés, which removed right after the update went smothly.

Now, some time later, I saw that the 000002.vmdk file is always there and always referenced when I check the properties of the virtual machine.

So this happened not recognized for some time now, the server has 3 virtual drives, two of which have these snapshotfiles, 25GB and 50GB the other short.

I've been digging around the internet for some time now, and so far the only solution I found was to create a new snapshot and then select "Remove all" since the Snapshot Manager. Thus engage all snapshot of the files at once.

Fortunately, we have still some 700 GB of space on the volumes, but I'm not sure about this procedure. With snapshots of this size, there will be a delay (I think that's what happened the first time) or something else. When this server going boom, we have a problem. (of course, there is a backup, but I'm not Admin Exchange and this guy is on vacation, murphy...)

You think it's a good idea? Any other ideas?

    Oh, our environment:

    vCenter 4.1 345043

    ESXi 4.1 582267

    Sincere greetings,

    Thomas

    Welcome to the community,

with ESXi 4.1 in place, you should have any problems with delays, so I would go ahead and follow the snapshot create-> delete all routes.

Two thought but since I do not know the workload. Think to delete snapshots after the opening hours (depending on the speed of storage) and be absolutely sure, there is no backup (or something else) who tries to create another snapshot when the consolidation is on!

I would go ahead and delete the snapshots with the virtual machine. IMO it is not necessary to do with the virtual machine off.

  • VM wants to drive consolidation, but no snapshots are listed in the Snapshot Manager

After a replication failed with VEEAM, I get this on one of my virtual machines:

    "Configuration problems.

Disks of virtual machines-building is necessary. »

without having any snapshots indicate Manager snapshots.

The name of the drive listed under 'change settings' does, that the disk is a snapshot, however.

How to solve this problem properly?

    Best regards, Lars.

The two option should work fine even when the virtual machine is running. According to the snapshot sizes, deleting it may take a while so please be patient.

    André

PS: A thought if the Basic virtual disk is thin and put into operation, make sure that you have enough of free disk space on the data store before starting the deletion/consolidation!

  • Management of VMs: Which one to use, "hosts and Clusters" or "models and virtual computers.

    Hi all

As the subject says, when you manage virtual machines, which is better to use? Hosts and Clusters? Models and virtual computers?

    It's our facility:

Previously we had only been using "Hosts and Clusters" manage all of our virtual machines. We organize objects of the individual within vApps and Resource Pools. We had also installation on these both parent objects permissions for who has access to what.

Basically, we have about 12 members. Everyone has their own virtual machines that they use for training, etc. We manage centralized via AD with users and groups user access. We also have some users assigned to some hosts to maintain the level of things between the two hosts. Our license does not DRS, BTW.

I just replaced our server vCenter in preparation for our 4.1 vSphere upgrade later this year, Yes, we are on vSphere 4.0 currently. So I went ahead and 'computers models and virtual"allowing to create user folders, gave users access and placed virtual machines of all users within these folders. (I heard recently that the use of the hosts and Clusters was semantically incorrect). Even if they have access to their folder, they cannot create a virtual machine because they cannot access a host. A computer file virtual and models can be assigned to a host?

I didn't assign permissions to each user in order to add to each host, because I didn't want others to mess with other virtual machines. All users previously red access only, but sinc the virtual machines and templates folders are not assigned to any host, they can get in their folder to create and manage their virtual machines.

Then, I go on this wrong all the models and virtual computers and do I just keep using our hosts and Clusters of installation above permissions groups?

Any advice on the semantics in this would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Johnathan

    All,

    I solved my problems.

Check book Scott Lowes ' Mastering VMware vSphere 4 "Chapter 9, he described the use of Resource Pools to the VM group under the view of the hosts & Clusters. Using the same names as the files under VMs & models and adding the same permissions, I was able to force every user to use their own folder under VMs & templates and only their Resource Pool under hosts & Clusters. So now the two views reflect the objects of each user and their access controls are correct.

    Items to remove this Lessines:

Use Of Resource Pools under host & Clusters to manage the default host for users.

Files under VMs & models allows you to manage virtual machines model announcement for each user (simple view).

    Thanks for the help,

    Johnathan

    In summary:

    • What is the role and the content of the files being created whenever I take a snapshot?
    • What is - that supposed to happen if I delete a file containing a snapshot (file, not the snapshot)?

    Concerning

    • 1. how memory is allocated in the host PC?

    • 6. What is - that supposed to happen if I delete a file containing a snapshot (file, not the snapshot)?

    1. that costs on the settings in your config.ini file
    2. the host can use somethiong between 2200 MB and a few MBs - depends on config.ini
3 the host said 'not possible' either the virtual machine starts - with extreme settings, you can allocate 5 x physical RAM available to your virtual machine

    4 and 5.

vmsd-file = list used by the customer snapshots
VMSN-file = settings and configuring the host when the snapshot was created
00000*.vmdk = file does the actual data of the snapshot

    6. cannot be predicted: anything can happen: System can be will start more or healthy - so NEVER do this

    > Should I expect to use as much RAM on the host computer as the sum of memory configured all virtual machines of comments?

again it depends on your config.ini file settings - if twist you config.ini for better performance, then the answer is YES

AFAIK this Satellite Pro L100 has been equipped with a SATA HDD controller.
All hard drives 2.5 SATA should therefore be compatible controllers SATA HDD with no limitation.

Beginning taken IDE controllers support only 28-bit LBA and allows only to hard disks up to 128 GB.
Given that the ATA - 6 the 48-bit LBA is supported which allows the use of larger hard drives?

  • Create component URM reports - records management.

In the management of documents in the content of the WebCenter 11 g (11.1.1.9), created reports are generated by a version of the runtime of Oracle BI Publisher.  In order to create these reports, there are report templates that are stored during the initial set-up of records management.  These models are in rich text format (RTF). • Install powershell module on computers invited to take snapshots.

I would like to install the module powercli on some of our guest computer running windows 2003 and 2008r2.  Run a script to take a snapshot before install us the microsoft via SCCM updates.  I was not able to find the module. I found examples of scripts.  Run us VMware ESXi 5.1.0 in a cluster.  Our VMware administrator is not familiar with the power of CLI and as you may have guessed I'm not a VMware administrator.  I belong to Netapp and also make the Microsoft updates on our servers.  I'd appreciate any help.  I want to try and keep it as simple as possible because it is a path to auto update servers.  I'd also be interested in thoughts runs the scripts from a point central would be a better solution.

    Thank you

You can download the latest version PowerCLI package here: https://developercenter.vmware.com/web/dp/sdk/55/vsphere-powercli

(PowerCLI 5.5 supports both versions 5.1 and earlier versions)

You need not install anything in the GuestOS themselves unless you want to trigger the operation of snapshot within each GuestOS (which seems cumbersome).

Install PowerCLI on your workstation or a central management server to run scripts, you point the scripts to execute on the vCenter server that manages your infrastructure. You also need the respective permissions on the side of vCenter to access the VM inventory, manage snapshots etc.

Just a tip: be sure to not overuse clichés too and clean in a timely way thereafter.
