Mapping of LUNS ESX - id scsi is not consistent across the cluster - problem or not?

Hello

as a parenthesis in an associated storage workshop, the instructor said that on some site of the client, there was silence damaged metadata vmfs happening and the reason for it was locking issues that concerned the fact that the SAN LUNS Hat different scsi id on different Cluster nodes.

I asked for references for this, but I got information on the verification of metadata etc.

now, the reason why I'm asking here is, I found that some in our environment vmfs data warehouses do not have compatible scsi-id numbering on the Cluster. I thought it was just mostly a cosmetic problem...

Two questions:

1 are warehouses of VMFS data really at risk with this? Any reference to a KB or some experience on site? We have never had a problem with the warehouses of data so far.

2. about the setting of this (we do it anyway), which is the recommended best practices to do?  Shouldn't a data store with a different ID Scsi remapping result in the data store that is detected as a snapshot?  Think we need to do some additional precautionary measures to avoid what is happening

Thank you!

Take a look at this article for possible problems: VMware KB: can not see some or all VMware vCenter Server or VirtualCenter storage devices

A requirement is to have uniform or a coherent presentation of the LUNS across managed VMware ESX servers. More specifically, must match the LUN ID for each respective LUN between all of the VMware ESX servers.

  • Storage LUNS ESX 3.5 limit?

Anyone here heard that VMware does not recommend the establishment of LUN with more than 1 TB? I have a customer who bought a Dell Equalogic over 6 TB of space, of the VMware ESX Server 3.5 04 clienthas, he wants to create a 2 TB LUN that these servers pre-assembled this LUN in the future and so the customer can enable the feature HA withVMotion, the moment he has no server vCenter to do this.

Only a specialist Dell infrormou that VMware does not recommend the creation of LUNSwith more 1 TB, but the client could not explain to me why is informed by a Dell expertfrom, he advises the customer to create four 500 GB LUN with all LUNS see theseservers, rather than a single 2 TB.

Nobody here knows how to say that this suggestion of Dell? Is there the anylimitation in Vmware that prevents the administration of large LUN?

    Thank you all.

Even if the LUN presented to ESX 3.x and 4.x limit is 2 TB less than 512 bytes, I agree with the DELL technician. Unless you need large data warehouses/LUN you'd better go with several 500-600 GB LUN. In this way, you can present the LUNS via the ports of different controller on storage for better performance and also you are less affected by the reserves of SCSI.

  • Try to use mapped raw LUNs to the new drive, but it is grayed out.

I have a volume set up on my SAN for my host Dataserver and when I look at the configuration for the storage card from the host (iSCSI adapter SW) it lists the unit, so I know that he can see it.

The problem is when I go to the Dataserver VM and try to add a new hard drive, it won't let me select "maps Raw Lun. I missed a step in the development of this device?

To ensure that this RDM file is pointing to the correct LUN, run:

    vmkfstools q - /vmfs/volumes/.../DATASERVER_VM1_4.vmdk

Usually you would remove a RDM disk by selecting "remove disc" when you remove it from the virtual machine (this removes only files hard and not the data on the LUN itself). However, it should work just delete the two files - the vocation and the associated descriptor file - browser data store. The data browser store will only show the name of the desctiptor file.

If you can afford a few outages, power off the virtual computer, re - join the mapping file and then remove it by selecting meanings reported "remove disc"

PS: No host reboot is required for this action.

  • How many LUNS ESX 3.5 U3 can manage?

The guides say up to 128 by host - I took this as 128 but I heard all about this fall comments that more guests are added in the cluster.

Can someone just delete it is up to - 128 or the number of hosts sharing access to the LUN change things?

    Thank you

    Hi Jon,

The setting are per ESX server not for the entire cluster. This will make a nice reading.

Number of paths to a LUN 32

Number of total paths on a 1024 Server

  • 1 LUN / VM/client?  surely not?

Can someone point me to best practices or advice me why not for this that I find it difficult to convince another team to my not to do.

They are more concerned by the IO on head when taking snapshots via IPstor.  I said no not to use a LUN by guest because it's useless, virtual machine snapshots could fill a LUN and cause the prompt to fall, but I don't know how to get more than there are i/o.

Anyone got any solid information that I can throw at them?

    Thank you very much

It's the VMware white paper on storage performance planning which solves the following problem:

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/scalable_storage_performance.PDF

'S done it to make management more difficult to consider putting a small number of virtual machines in each LUN.  Implementation of a general policy of 1 LUN per VM for the whole of the environment I can't imagine how to find for any environment, and I don't think that a policy should be taken in this respect for even the busiest virtual machine.  Just as a first step, I would consider that drive C:/root of most of the VMs is not very heavily used as well as a general policy, several of them may be on a shared LUN for easier management.  It makes sense to put data into separate virtual disks of BONE usually, this is where you can start to consider placing less of these disks virtual together in a single LUN/VMFS or RDM volume according to the expected of each virtual disk data i/o load.

  • ESX 3.5 does not start with two intel cpu on an ibm HS21 blade 5420

I have 4 ibm HS21 blades that I bought recently and ESX 3.5 does not start on them if I have both CPU intel 5420 installed. It will start if I remove one of the CPU. This also occurs if I try ESXi.

I have two blades I bought 8 months ago that work well with both CPU is installed. Blade models are very similar, "old" is hs21-8853a1c new knives is hs21-8853g3u.

I have updated the bios and the controllers. At this point, I shot two blades of the additional processor so that I can use them but I would really like to put back them.

  • P2V one resource to Cluster MS and not to the cluster nodes

    Hello!

We are looking to do a P2V on our file servers, which are all 2 node A / P SAN connected MS Cluster. I see articles where people work to convert the cluster nodes themselves and then have the MS Cluster running on ESX - this isn't what I want to do.

I've not seen any (covered by a research brief) mention of any attempt to make a virtual server Cluster MS. P2V conversion Looks like it is the best deal if it worked.

So I FS1 as the virtual resource with N1 and N2 as nodes.  Can I run a P2V of FS1 crowd for a disk system to capture all the action, then just RDM the SAN LUNS to the VM FS1 newly created? Or am I stuck with the creation of a third node, clustered, expelling the original, closing nodes cluster services and then rename or uses DNS to point to the FULL FS1 domain name?

    Thank you!

I know that sounds a good idea but any time
I tried P2V ING I ended up regretting the MSCS clusters. For the file
& Print sharing there is some direct negative side effects but for
The SQL cluster, it is very messy. You can not P2V the virtual server name
(FS1) directly, you must break the cluster and migrate the
individual nodes. But as I said it's a bad idea in any case.

If these are just some cluster file server then the easiest thing to do
is just export actions (they are just a registry key), build a new
clean the VM, attach the existing data as a RDM disk and import the
registry keys. Once your happy that it work, rename the machine as
the former name of virtual node.

  • Cannot "turn on media streaming" - another user of Windows 7 with the same problem and the "suggested correction '' does not.

This windows bug has been reported and 'responded' before by several people, but the "answers" do not work for me - and they do seem to work for a lot of people in this area and other forums.  I hope you can provide me with a real estate diagnosis, a reason for why this happens and a real solution that works for everyone.

I'm trying to 'Turn on media streaming' in Windows Media Player so I can listen to my xbox and other home theater equipment.  The problem I have is the same problem as [of] other people have reported: in Windows Media Player, I press the turn on the 'link', the button greys streamin media shortly, but then nothing, and streaming is not enabled.

I don't have a network problem.  I was able to extend Microsoft Media Center on my xbox.  (simply not enable streaming in WMP).  With media center extended is a large (better) workaround for the xbox, but this isn't a solution for my other home theater devices. I need to be able to listen to my receiver and blu - ray player, as I have done on my old PC running Windows XP.

I have a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro, x-64 on a new machine of self-building.  Everything else works, it is not the machine.  I installed all the latest drivers for my machine.  I have all the updates for Windows 7.  I run the Windows Firewall and Kaspersky Anti Virus 2010.  I installed Microsoft Office 2007, Outlook 2007, Visio 2010 and many other applications 'standard '.  I'm not under any program of low-level "weird."

As other people "suggested", already tried the action of the outgoing WMP, stop the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service using service.msc, then by removing the .wmdb (and other files but not directories) by my dirctory users/xxx/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Media Player, restart the Service of network share WMP using services.msc and then restarting WMP.  This had no effect.  (I tried several times with and without having to restart WMP network sharing service manually.)  I tried to change the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, tab log (the default on my system) Network Service to Local System with "allow service to interact with desktop" chosen as someone another "suggested".  This does not seem to do anything.  I also tried to uninstall WMP and WMC player (using "turn Windows has or disable"), restart, then adding them and reboot.  This time this icon "turn media sharing on" returned in WMP (the icon is usually party WMP Stream/turn on media sharing window).  This time Windows 7 Pro thought a little longer before doing nothing.  (However, now I get a message error "an error has occurred. Not all features have been changed successfully. "in an attempt to"Reinstall"Windows Media Center after you have reinstalled WMP.)  The resettlement of WMC has returned an error.  I can no longer start Windows Media Center on my PC.

So, by all posts on this topic, its obvious this is a real bug in Windows 7 (maybe?), (perhaps only on x - 64?).

Just two more things on my setup... I did not initially set up homegroup (because I have no other Windows 7 machines), but I tried that implemented to see if it had an effect (it didn't).  The part only 'weird' of my installation, I mounted my D: drive (2nd hard drive) in C:\Users (because I use a Solid State Drive for the operating system on C: and don't want the user data on this subject).  This has not caused other problems, but I wanted to throw it out there in case Windows Media Player sharing is something weird here.  (And no, I'm not going to 'try to change' that, unless it is a known fact that that's the problem - and then I would need a different solution to move my user data off the coast of the SSD.)

So please, let me know what is the real problem why it happened to me (I'm sure some people can turn on streaming in WMP), and what is the real solution.  (There seems to be a multitude of suggestions on the web for all kinds of different 'fixed', but which, if any, is the right one?)  Please do not just suggest things to try.  What is the right benchmark?

Go to network and sharing center open view full map, right click on your PC and click on manage.

then open services and applications, and then serivces and find Upnp device host, right click and click on reboot and make sure that it is set to automatic.

Now scroll down to Windows Media Player Network Sharing service, do a right click and click on reboot and make sure that it is set to automatic also.

It should work, it worked for me and everyone I know but... The only problem I have is when I restart my PC, the drive share Windows Media network service changes from automatic to automatic (delayed start) and I have to restart again the Upnp device host and Windows Media Player network sharing service.

Other than having to do every time I restart my PC, it works perfectly.

Also, if anyone has an idea of why it changes (delayed start) let me know thanks...

  • Not enough resources to meet the level of HA failover in the cluster in data center

    Hi guys,.

We just migrated our ESX 4 clusters to a new VirtualCenter (version of Base 2.5 - & gt; 2.5U4), and one of the clusters is showing «insufficient resources to meet the HA...» "error message.

First of all - is it possible to refine what host is at the origin of the problem (or VC), or is it a real issue with ability?

I followed some VMTN articles to avoid the usual bugs: -.

    • Ensure all host FQDN, and domain names are lowercase in VC - home | Configuration | DNS and routing

    • Make sure while tiny in/etc/hosts, sysconfig, /etc/vmware/esx.conf and/proc/sys/kernel/hostname on all 4 hosts.

    • Deactivated / reactivated HA on the cluster

    • Looked into the VC vpxd*.log the period of time during which HA was past - but don't know what to look for?  There are a few warnings such as:

      • Warning 'Local' 5940] FormatField: optional unset (vim.event.VmUuidAssignedEvent.vm)

      • "VpxProfiler" 2752 WARNING] InvtHostSyncLRO::StartWork took ms 2203

      • Warning 'Local' 6032] FormatField: optional unset (vim.event.HostDasErrorEvent.message)

      • "PropertyJournal" 5380 WARNING] ERProviderImpl & lt; BaseT & gt; : _GetChanges: global version name overflow host-600

      • .. .etc

There are 4 hosts in the cluster - and capacity seems ok.  I watched [doc ability vmwarewolfs | ] http://www.vmwarewolf.com/HA-failover-capacity/ [ ], but am not sure that I totally understand it.

    4 guests look like:

    1 - 32 GB RAM (22 in use) / 17600 Mhz CPU (5548 current usage)

    2 - 64 GB RAM (31 in use) / 17600 Mhz CPU (7661 current usage)

    3 - 32 GB RAM (18 in use) / 17600 Mhz CPU (4210 current usage)

    4 - 64 GB RAM (20 in service) / 17600 Mhz CPU (7440 current usage)

How can I work if there are really insufficient resources or is it a bug that will be bypassed by creating a new cluster and migrate more hosts in maintenance mode?

    Thanks for your time guys!

    Dan

You have all vms with a high reserve (memory or cpu)? If so, this can cause the HA being too conservative admission control algorithm. The guide of availability of vSphere for details on the algorithm of "slot" - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_availability.pdf, especially pages 13-16. Some of the mentioned options are only available in vSphere 4, but the basic mechanism is also applicable to the VC 2.5.

VC 2.5 does not expose the details of accommodation through the user interface as vSphere 4, but you can get some information in the vpxd newspaper. Try the power on a virtual machine (you should get an error message on failover insufficient capacity) and look in the logs of vpxd for 'Housing news' - the following lines should have a few details - download those to this topic if you need help their deciphering.

The bug in question should be solved with a daily update of today. However, I agree with the recommendation to go with 31.0 once it comes out next Tuesday, or at least to use the beta versions (once per cycle) as a compromise between stability and get the latest features and updates to the platform.
