  But then the table at the bottom of the same page seems to imply that the maximum is 16 GB.
  
  Please can someone tell if the maximum is 16GB or 32GB in this model?

  I don't understand all this rigamarole.

  It's very confusing. It seems that HP has copied some info from Intel about the specifications of the chipset and I couldn't make either heads or tails of it on the Intel site.

  Max RAM per slot is 4 GB.

  I installed 16 GB in mine.

  Put two stick 4 GB of exactly the same configuration, speed etc as in the manual and each other, perhaps even brand. Crucial, Kingston have their online scanners that contains the list guaranteed compatible sticks.

  If you look in the BIOS of 8 GB installed, you will see.

  No. 32-bit operating system can 'see' / use more than 4 GB of memory and the installed hardware (video card, etc), usually 3-3, 5 GB of memory is available for use in a 32-bit operating system.

  There is nothing you can do to get more than what you have now except to install a 64-bit operating system.

  Looking for drivers for XP 64 bit for your laptop would be difficult.

  Better to go with Windows 7 x 64, for which your PC has been designed to work on.

  The benefit of research - C200 8922 do indeed use the complete i945GM chipset and support 4 GB and as two 2 GB DDR2 modules.

  Even better, matching modules also enable dual-channel mode and this has a dramatic effect on the performance of Windows Aero - Windows 7 aero performance assessment increased from 2.5 to 3.5 (it was using 800 MHz CL6 modules).

  My suggestion would be to run the free analysis tool of Crucial memory, which will report how much and what type of memory can use your laptop.
