messages and icloud does not

Platform: Late 2009 iMac, running 10.11.4.

When I try to start the application Messages, I get the login window iCloud with colorful ball spinning of not-so-good.  Finally, I see in Force Quit what he won't and I left it.  Rinse, repeat, same thing.  Even after disconnection and reboot.

I decided to go to Preferences-> iCloud system to see what I could figure out there and while everything else I tried in the preferences system works well, once I click the iCloud icon, I get the ball spinning again and a system of preferences is not responding.

I ran disk-> first aid utility and nothing was in trouble with the drive.

Ideas?  Thanks in advance!

FWIW, other dependent applications of the iCloud (calendar, Contacts) work OK.
