  I tried several times to download and install the automatic updates of Microsoft Office 2007, however, they have failed repeatedly to install.  When this happens, I get error Code 646  Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, which is no longer on my computer, is offered several times for me.  I would appreciate your comments on this issue.   This problem occurs when the agent Windows Update Wups2.dll file is incorrectly registered in the registry. Because registry files that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing, update facilities have failed. There are two methods to resolve this issue, use method 1 first, and if it did not resolve your issue, go to method 2

  Method 1: Save the Windows Update files

  1. click Start and type notepad in the box start the search .

  2. click on Notepad in the programs list.

  3. copy the following commands, and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:

  REGSVR32 WUPS2. DLL/S
  REGSVR32 STINKS. DLL/S
  REGSVR32 WUAUENG. DLL/S
  REGSVR32 WUAPI. DLL/S

  Summary of the issue:

  We are aware of a potential problem that you may experience with the latest updates to Office security.   When you install these updates, the Windows Update control panel returns the error 646 or 0 x 80070646.

  Technical details:

  Error 0 x 80070646 or 646 is a MSI installer error that won't happen when the updates are installed via the Windows Update control panel.  Workaround solution previous to solve the immediate problem requires the installation of the update to a standalone package starting from Microsoft Download Center.  We do not recommend this workaround solution.

  If the Windows Installer logging is enabled, the following line must be identified as a symptom:

  Error 1606. Could access the location %APPDATA%\ network

   

  Cause:

  The problem is potentially a result of an incompatible, incorrect environment (%AppData%) as variable shown below:

  Solution:

  1. open the registry editor.  To do this, click Start, type regedit in the search box, and then click regedit.exe in the list programs. In the user account control dialog box, click on continue.

  2 go to the following registryHKEY_USERS\ keys. DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

   

  3. the correct and should be the default value forAppData % USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming. To edit the value, double click on Appdata, then change the string in the value data field.

  4. close the registry editor, and then try Windows Update again. (A restart article be required).
