Migration and instant data warehouses
I inherited a network of ESX 3.5 in a remote office. This network has 3 data stores, which only has 2 GB of free space. Virtual machines are not patches with current service packs, etc. I tried to migrate a virtual server computer to another that is connected to a larger data store, but I got an error that a file not found DPP-Lab702-000006 - delta.vmdk. I don't see no - delta files in the data store for this virtual machine. What is a good source to learn the inner workings of VMware and how I get rid or consolidate snapshots so I can move some virtual machines for free space.
Thank you very much, Mike...
Hello and welcome to the forums.
The best snapshot info that I know longer series of Eric Siebert searchvmware.com - other than that, look for documentation of VMware ESX 3.5. It's really some of the best documentation of the software you will ever run across.
Good luck!

How to speed up the transfer of files to and from data warehouses ESXi
Hi people!
Our company has a large number of
VMware ESXi 3.5 and 4.0 servers. (Note: this is not the free ESXi, the)
Paid ESX Server.) They generally work very well for us. The only area of
problem I have is to transfer files to and from data warehouses on
the machines.
Because we do not have the ESX Server paid, I can't
use vMotion or VirtualCenter to transfer virtual machines from one location
to the other. So, if I need to move a virtual machine to a different host,
the only solution I have is to download the VM
files of the database on a local or network drive and then download
paste them into the new data store, using the vSphere Client. The problem
with this is that I found it is extremely slow. This may take
hours just to copy a virtual machine.
Does anyone know of one
best way to do that would reduce the transfer time?
Thank you!

Hello
Use veeam fastscp 3.0 its freeware. You can connect n number of esxi server.
You can move or copy directly from one server to another server...

Hi, I have a problem with SRM and NFS data warehouses
When I set up the table through vCentre Customer Manager in the MRS Plugin I get the following message when scanning for NFS data storage
"Replicated devices could not be matched with inventory data warehouses."
We have a 4.01 vSphere server with ESX 3.5u4 hosts.
SRM 4.0 is deadlocked.
Our storage is on IBM Nseries N5600 reporting using DataOntap 7.2.5.1.
The SRA we use are ver 1.4 of IBM.
Someone at - it never experianced this problem and if so how to fix it.
Thank you
Mahmood
I used this SRA without any problems, so I suspect that something is wrong with your replicated configuration of NFS export.
To help further, I would need to see the SRM journal from the site server protected SRM immediately after seeing this message. You can download that on this subject?
I also suggest that you connect a SR with VMware support, because they can help here as well.
see you soon

List virtual machines and their data warehouses
I took a dagger to the list of all virtual machines in my VC with data warehouses where their VMDK:
$report = @)
$allvms = Get-VM
{foreach ($vm to $allvms)
$row = "" | Select VMNAME, DATASTORE
$row. VMNAME = $vm.name
{color: #ff0000} $row. DATA store = (Get - VM | get-data store)
$report += $row
}
$report | Export-Csv "C:\vm_ds.csv" -NoTypeInformation
No luck. I know that the problem is with the cndlet of get-data store, the file indicates the VMNAME column filled with virtual machines, as expected, but the column of report DATA store System.Object [].
Any help would be appreciated.
You are already in a loop through all the guests (the loop foreach in line 3), there is no need to get all customers with the cmdlet Get - VM (again) in the 6th line.
You can just pass (i $vm) invites him to the cmdlet Get-data store on line
System.Object [] entry in the CSV file is caused by the fact that the Export-CSV cmdlet does not know how to handle objects or arrays of objects.
One solution is to loop through all the data store names that are returned.
And keep the data store name in the property of the DATA store.
The result is that there will be several rows in the CSV file to people with more than 1 data store.
$report = @() $allvms = Get-VM foreach ($vm in $allvms) { $dstores = $vm | Get-Datastore foreach($ds in $dstores){ $row = "" | select VMNAME, DATASTORE $row.VMNAME = $vm.name $row.DATASTORE = $ds.Name $report += $row } } $report | Export-Csv "C:\vm_ds.csv" -NoTypeInformation

The best location for vcenter VM and placeholder data warehouses
Hello
I have an SRM installation with 2 sites. The sites are separated by metro trunk of layer 2 ethernet between the sites.
Site has
1 EqualLogic PS6100
2 ESX servers configured as cluster
There is a single data store volume over the San with all virtual machines in this cluster
There is one instance of vCenter to this place located in the same data as the other virtual machines store
There are also a few other volumes on the SAN used for the RDM disks in virtual machines
I also created a small volume of 1 GB as a VMFS data store and have it mapped in SRM to use as a placeholder for a data store
What are your thoughts on that? Is this the best way? I could use the local storage on the ESX servers? Main VM can be used for fictional settings or my data store?
SRM is installed on the same VM as vCenter
MRS. uses SQL Express on the local vCenter VM
vCenter also uses SQL Express
Site B
1 EqualLogic PS4100
1 ESX Server, so no clustering
There is a single data store volume over the San with all virtual machines running on ESX Server
According to the requirements of the SRM, there is a separate instance of vCenter operating as a virtual machine, and it is not in bound mode. Should it be? / Should it be?
The number of volumes on the SAN and their goals is the same Site A, the only difference is the size of the volume is smaller because less machines virtual running on this site.
Replication has been implemented and verified the bi-directional working.
We use replication on Bay
OK, here's the problem... When I do a recovery expected, the process stops all the virtual machines on this site that includes the server vCenter/SRM. I guess that to happen because it's on the same database as my other virtual machines?
If I run the recovery in emergency mode, vCenter is then moved to the other site and power. Because the sites are layer 2 and on the same vlan, MRS. watch sites are connected by 2 instances SRM can meet eventhough they are now running on the same site. This does not seem right to me.
Can someone suggest a better configuration?
Thank you
Brian
Hello
There is one instance of vCenter to this place located in the same data as the other virtual machines store
What are your thoughts on that? Is this the best way?
In addition to vCenter VMS residing on the store of data replicated, it's OK.
I could use the local storage on the ESX servers?
I think that you can, but it is not recommended, because it creates dependency on the availability of the single ESX host.
Main VM can be used for fictional settings or my data store?
I would not recommend this. This will create a mess on the data store. Continue to 1 GB placeholder data store you created and do not replicate.
MRS. uses SQL Express on the local vCenter VM
vCenter also uses SQL Express
Consider that SQL express is adapted to the environment of very small size (don't remember the numbers now). Make sure that you do not exceed the limits.
1 ESX Server, so no clustering
There is a single data store volume over the San with all virtual machines running on ESX Server
This host has sufficient capacity to run all the virtual machines together (Site A and Site B)?
I recommend having two hosts for prallele and accelerate the recovery process (multiple virtual machines can be powered on simultaneously).
According to the requirements of the SRM, there is a separate instance of vCenter operating as a virtual machine, and it is not in bound mode. Should it be? / Should it be?
You don't have to configure them in bound Mode. This is for ease of management only (license, roles and inventory)
OK, here's the problem... When I do a recovery expected, the process stops all the virtual machines on this site that includes the server vCenter/SRM. I guess that to happen because it's on the same database as my other virtual machines?
Yep, do not put vCenter VM on the VMS data store and reproduce at all.
If I run the recovery in emergency mode, vCenter is then moved to the other site and power. Because the sites are layer 2 and on the same vlan, MRS. watch sites are connected by 2 instances SRM can meet eventhough they are now running on the same site. This does not seem right to me.
Do not replicate vCenter / SRM VM and that will not happen.
Michael.

VMDK, vmfs, san, VM, mulitple volumes and data warehouses.
Hello
I'm in the middle of the creation of a MV for a windows server which will have some data (about 10 records about 5 TB) file sharing. I find a better one how to create this virtual machine with a correct sizing of the data store, number of data to use store and the number of volumes must span the store data or best recomondation.
I don't think not vmware support 5 TB of data in the near future, max is less than 2 TB, so I put all data warehouses in a single 5 TB volume or multi-volume 1 TB, 2 TB, 2 TB, and options create the virtual machine with 6 disks (C = 80 GB, 1 TB = D E = 1 to, F = 1 to, G = 1 TB and H = 1 TB). All my files are less than 1 TB in size and will be will not develop more than 1 TB. Due to the limitation of size of data store.
I'm looknig for some best practice, expereimented or recomondations solution. Should be an easy management of the virtual machine, an easy migration between the host migration easy with data warehouses or volumes, snapshot to replicate or volume volume, etc... This virtual machine is implemented with cluster.
Thanks in advance.
I suggest that you set up a small test and storage vMotion for your self. Understand the limits of Storage vMotion

Newbie question: list the Configuration of virtual machines and data warehouses
Hello
I'm new on using powercli how to list all virtual machines in a certain data center, their memory, Procs and what data warehouses they are on.
I know you can use get - vm | Select-object name, NumCPU MemoryMB but if I add DatastoreIdList as well, it doesn't seem to work. What Miss me
Thank you very much
Laurence
That's right, you could do
Get-VM MyVM | Select Name,@{N="DS";E={[string]::join(',',($_.datastoreidlist|%{(Get-View -Id $_).Name}))}},Description | Export-Csv "C:\test.csv" -NoTypeInformation -UseCulture
Just look at whether the separator for CSV is be a comma in your culture, you probably need to adjust the separator in the Join method!

Data warehouses up-to-date for a pool of VMware using PowerCli
Using this as a starting block.
VMware View 5.2 Documentation Library
I want to combine both functions and the variables to use ".txt files" with my new and old data warehouses listed.
I edited a bit, combining both functions and variables for lists old and new creation, but I don't know about the context to provide variables for text files. All PowerShell / PowerCli guru?
# Function PowerShell to add new, then remove the old warehouses of data in an automatic pool.
# UpdateDatastoresForAutomaticPool
# Parameters
# $Pool ID of the pool pool to update.
# $OldDatastore full path to OldDatastore.txt to be removed.
# $NewDatastore full path to NewDatastore.txt to add.
$Pool = "C:\powercli\PersistentPools.txt".
$OldDatastore = "C:\powercli\OldDatastore.txt".
$NewDatastore = "C:\powercli\NewDatastore.txt".
function RemoveDatastoreFromAutomaticPool
{param ($Pool, $OldDatastore)
$PoolSettings = (get-pool-pool_id, $Pool)
$currentdatastores = $PoolSettings.datastorePaths
$datastores = «»
foreach ($path in $currentdatastores.split (";"))) {
If (-not ($path - eq $OldDatastore)) {}
$datastores = $datastores + "$path;"
}
}
Update-LITERALLY-pool_id, $Pool - datastorePaths $datastores
}
function AddDatastoreToAutomaticPool
{param ($Pool, $NewDatastore)
$PoolSettings = (get-pool-pool_id, $Pool)
$datastores = $PoolSettings.datastorePaths + "; $NewDatastore ".
Update-LITERALLY-pool_id, $Pool - datastorePaths $datastores
}
Thank you
-Matt
You use literal strings instead of the content for the files. Assuming that the contents of the file is a list with one entry on each line, you need to change your code actually look at the data, for example:
$oldstores = get-content "C:\powercli\OldDatastore.txt".
foreach ($path in $currentdatastores.split (";"))) {
If (-not ($oldstores - contains $path)) {}
...
}
}

POS 5.5 could not obtain data with analytical performance data warehouses
Hi all
I have two devices POS running version: 5.5.5.180.
All of a sudden I can not connect to the Web Client for each device.
POS status show all services in green on the two Pdvs.
root@vdp:~/#: dpnctl status all Identity added: /home/dpn/.ssh/dpnid (/home/dpn/.ssh/dpnid) dpnctl: INFO: gsan status: up dpnctl: INFO: MCS status: up. dpnctl: INFO: Backup scheduler status: up. dpnctl: INFO: axionfs status: up. dpnctl: INFO: Maintenance windows scheduler status: enabled. dpnctl: INFO: Unattended startup status: enabled.
By clicking on the Storage tab, displays the error message: "Unable to get data with analytical performance data warehouses" and no data warehouses are listed.
- VCenter restarts, Pdvs, doesn't change anything.
- I can connect to Pdvs very well.
- CP are created.
I found similar topics but no response... (
)Open a support case and turned out that the POS password user (a user defined in the domain of the @vsphere.local) that was used to access the vCenter has expired. Apparently, there's a bug in vCenter for some versions that makes them expire in 65 days.

Migration of VMs between data warehouses
I added a new data store to a vSphere 5.5 infrastructure and created a few scheduled tasks to migrate under tension on the virtual machines between data warehouses.
The migration is successful, but on the source data store, I still see a lot of files for some migrated VMs, including the .vswp and vmware files - xx.log.
This means that the scheduled task has failed?
What have I to do to completely move virtual machines?
Should I turn off and turn on the virtual machine?
Concerning
Marius
Maybe this file are simply zombie files, generated cause an improper shutdown of the VM (take a look at the date of creation/modification of files). You can try to rename these files, if you are able to do so, these files aren't really in use. After you rename and make sure that the virtual machine works as expected, you can manually delete the files.

I have a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses, and I need to move
Okay, I'm trying to reconfigure the storage on a cluster of ESXi to software development, and I fell on a virtual machine that is resident on two data warehouses. Somehow, the user has configured this thing to have most of the VM files on the data store 5 while all the vmdk but the residence on the data store 1 boot drive. He probably did it because of the size of the old warehouses of data and the many VMs older than his colleagues left sitting. Well, now I just reconfigure data warehouses so that there is more usable space, but I can't move this machine a virtual so that I can reconfigure the rest of storage. (For reference, the old warehouses of data have been implemented in 4 sets of three disks in RAID 3 and a set of four disks in RAID 3 with two drives hot spare.) For the record: not my idea. I am reconfiguring them now to be a set of 15 drives in RAID 6, divided into two LUNS on both controllers, with a hot spare.)
Well, now I need to figure out how to get this VM is spent at one of new data stores. The data migration store feature does not work. Any recommendations?
Hi Dangingerich,
You can move the VMDK individually with the advanced functionality of storage vMotion allows you to ask the data disk on your new storage space and then have the OS disk track.
YouTube Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhdmdcMmvas
Screenshots
When you svMotioning click on the Advanced button
Here you can select the individual VMDK and move.
All content comes from the video by Paul Braren, I annotated only his work.
Have fun

ESXi 4.1 upgrade to ESXi 5.5 while all virtual machines and data warehouses
We have two servers ESXi 4.1.0 348481 (Essentials) and we need to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 for support of Windows Server R2 2012. We intend to use the interactive upgrade. We want to ensure that the virtual machine is preserved. More precisely VMFarm001 where ESXi is installed in the same data store as VMServer1. VMServer1 is our largest server and cannot be migrated to another data store easily because we are not allowed for vMotion.
The following layout
VMFarm001
Dell PowerEdge R710
Data store:
Storage1 - 1.36 TB
VMServer1 - MS Server 2003
Install ESXi
Storage2 - 1.82 TB
VMServer2 - MS Server 2008 R2
VMServer3 - MS Server 2008 R2
VMFarm002
HP ProLiant ML350 G5
Data store:
Storage1 - 95GB
Install ESXi
ISOs
Storage2 - 1.82 TB
VMServer4 - MS Server 2008 R2
VMServer5 - MS Server 2008 R2
I have a feeling I'm worried for nothing given that option during the ESXi upgrade and keep the VMFS datastore.
Thank you
Yes, that's correct.
I recently finished the upgrade of lots of stand-alone hosts ESXi 4.1 (with local storage only) to 5.1 and all were successful. The same process applies to 5.5, so you shouldn't have a problem with preservation of VMFS data warehouses (and all virtual machines).
-
I speak not of Essentials Plus vMotion between hosts or migration of VMS between hosts and data warehouses online. Just curious to know if its possible to off a virtual machine and click the button to migrate to another store of data with the basic Essentials bundle.
Welcome to the community - Yes you can - it's what we call a cold migration.

Do we need data warehouse, if we only create dashboards and reports in obiee?
Hello! I'm new to obiee.
My organization has decided to build their reports and dashboards using obiee. I am involved in this mission, but I don't have in-depth knowledge he obiee. My question is what do we need to have the installation of the data warehouse? Or I just need to just install obiee by the creation of a repository, and then by creating a data source in publisher bi and then create dashboards or reports?
I'm confused too please help me in this regard. Please share any document or link where I can easily understand these things. Thank you
Please share any document or link where I can easily understand these things. Thank you
OBIEE is a software to run without a good understanding of its complex concepts. I would really recommend attending a training course, or at least a book (for example this or this). There are MANY items of general blog on OBIEE, many of which are of poor quality and are all step-by-step guides on how to do a particular task, without explaining the overall situation.
If you want to use OBIEE and to make it a success, you have learned to understand the basics.
To answer your question directly:
-BI Publisher is not the same thing as OBIEE. It is a component of it (but also autonomous available). OBIEE makes data accessible through 'Dashboards' which is made up of 'Analysis', written in the answers tool. Dashboards can also contain content BI Publisher if you want
-OBIEE can report against the many sources of different data, one or more data warehouse and transactional. Most of the OBIEE implementations that perform well are based against dedicated DW, but is not a mandatory condition.
-If reports against a DW real or not, when you build the repository OBIEE you build a "virtual" data warehouse, in other words, you dimensionally model all your business in one data set of logic diagrams in Star.
