Migration cold vcenter server VM to another logical data center

My version is 5.0

I have a vCenter with multiple logical datacenters.

I'm under vCenter on a virtual machine on a host in a datacenter.  The SQL Server with the vCenter database is on the same host.

I need to move the two virtual machines to a different host in another data center.

All LUNS are accessible from both hosts.

I'm under standard vSwitches, not distributed.   The vSwitches on each host have exact same exchanges that are put in place.

Can I migrate successfully cold other guests off the power, remove them from the inventory, save them with a new host and power back on.

However I'm not sure how to migrate the vCenter cold and SQL VMs.

My first thought was to turn off the power, connect the viClient directly to the guests in question and delete them from the inventory on the current host and save them to the new host.

What I don't know is if the vCenter database will have a problem with the location of the machine since I do change out vCenter.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Welcome to the community - you thought initial is correct since migrate is a function of vcenter but Word of warning make sure that you select Remove flexible financing inventory and not delete from the disk - remove inventory will remove form VM guests of stocks without deleting the VM disk shape.

There will be no problem with access to the database-

    Is not possible. For a migration live to work, you need the source networks and applications available in both environments.

    I just create a new server vCenter in the 5.1 environment and migrate new hosts to the new vCenter server.

  • Two vCenter - migration to vCenter Server 5

    Hello world.  I have a vCenter Server 4.1 to exsiting v4.1u1 hosts and production/DEV Essentials Enterprise production management.

    I want to build a new vCenter Server 5.  This new vCenter facility will also have the new databases and vcenter Update Manager, on a separate SQL Server.  I'm not worried about the loss of existing data as each of my existing hosts is also rebuilt to ESXi 5.

    My question is about licensing.  On the this server vCenter, all my license keys are exhausted.  If I build a new server vCenter, how can I add my existing ESX/ESXi servers to the new server vCenter without licenses available?  I realize that if I remove Let's said ESX01 since the existing vCenter server, these licenses go back in the pool on SERVER.  If I can't add ESX01 on the new vCenter server, I used this same license key?  In other words, have the same active key on two vCenter servers, which are not connected or even the same version?

    Clear as mud right?

    Thanks for your time.

    -Dave

    Using the same license key on both instances of vCenter server is actually the only way that you can migrate hosts on the new vCenter Server. I do not think that there is a problem of legal license if you disconnect a host of the "old" vCenter Server - releasing upward CPU licenses - and then assign the license to host again when you connect it to the new vCenter Server.

    In regards to your first sentence. Probably, you break the EULA if you manage Essentials through an instance other than the Server vCenter vCenter server for Essentials.

  • Migration of vCenter server vm to incompatible cpu?

    Our vCenter server and the SQL database running on a single virtual machine.  The data store is a SAN that is accessible to all the host ESX (i).

    How can I migrate this VM to a new host ESX (i) if the processors are not compatible?  I suspect that this departure vMotion?

    So far my research for this scenario have not find solutions.

    Hi HopeCollege,

    Connect with VI Client for the ESXi that hosts the virtual machine of vCenter. Close it with elegance. Cancel the registration of the host, simply remove it from the inventory.

    To connect to the destination ESXi with VI Client. Browse the data store and save the virtual machine of vCenter. Check the network configuration and all settings of the virtual machine. Finally start.

    Good luck.

  • Migrate from vCenter Server again HW with Cisco 1000v in environment

    I have a cluster 13 hosts ESXi 4.1 using a cisco 1kv currently and you want to move the vcenter server to a new host.  I anticipate using the same database as the existing host and IP.  Having the 1kv cisco in the environment will prevent simply connecting me the new instance of an existing database (after powering down the first instance) or it will create no additional steps in the process?

    As long as you manage the server vCenter and db, you should be fine.  You will encounter problems if you change these, like the 1KV, is ultimately always a dvSwitch, associated with the server vcenter himself.  Thus, while you plan to move to new hardware, your vCenter is still considered to be the old vcenter, otherwise, you will encounter problems.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • The migration of the VM from ESX 3.5 data center to data center inside the same building Vsphere

    Hi experts,

    Currently, we have 5 servers ESX 3.5 and a San in a shelter in the United Kingdom. This kit is now over 3 years old and the company replaces the complete kit with a new SAN, new servers and Vsphere 4.0.

    We have the opportunity to get new equipment to the top and running in the same shelter in Britain and are therefore able to run cable network between the two cabins if necessary.

    What is the best way to migrate existing virtual machines from the old environment running to the new environment running Vsphere ESX 3.5? As mentioned only the two cabins will run in the same shelter so nothing needs to go on a WAN link.

    IM keen to not load the machines on a USB key and move like that if I can help it. It appears from the research you cannot VMotion from one datacenter to another data center, however I can Storage VMotion between the two by using a method of migration cold?

    Any help will be appreciated, thanks

    Yes, presentation of the old drive will still be available on the assumption that it was not presentation of your San.  You can use a transit Host, which means that all the LUNS of the old environment and the new are presented to this host, but there will be a migration in a timely.  You have to vMotion invited to this host, unplug off the old environment and then in the new sVMotion (move the host and data store) to the new.  When this is done, unplug this transit host environment and add in the old, vmotion... Rinse and repeat.   Ideally, a presentation of the new LUNS to the old ESX host would be much faster.  In this way, you can bring your old environment together in the new. Make sense?

    When I disconnect and reconnect the old host to the new environment, which also happens to the virtual machines on this host? I need to move temporarily turned off?

  • Data Center migration of virtual machines and records from one data center to another.

    So, I found an online script that migrates your inventory during one vCenter to another.  I broke the script into two pieces that export (path of the folder path of the VM folder, permissions of folder and notes and custom attributes) and the other to import (create folders, move the virtual machines in the original folder, reset the permissions and set notes and custom attributes).

    The export script works very well.  I have problems with the import script.  If I have the name of the duplicate folder in the tree view of the structure of the tree will get duplicated under each similar folder.  i.e.

    Exported folder structure

    Portuagal-> football

    Spain> football> football

    Any folder structure

    Portugal> football> football

    Spain> football> football

    I guess I should somehow figure out the ID of file but don't have a clue where to start.

    I rewrote the section import of files of the script to avoid the problem of duplicated folder. The new script detects the parent folder by starting to look at the record of the root instead of just the folder above where it should be created. Because the full path is in the .csv file it is possible. The following script should now work correctly:

    ##IMPORT FOLDERS
    $vmfolder = Import-Csv "c:\Folders-with-FolderPath-$($datacenter).csv" | Sort-Object -Property Path

    foreach($folder in $VMfolder){
         $Path = $folder.Path.split("\")
         $PathLength = $Path.Length
         $SubFolder = Get-Datacenter $datacenter | Get-Folder vm
         For ($i= 1; $i -lt $PathLength-1; $i++) {
            $SubFolder = Get-Folder -Location $Subfolder -Name $Path[$i]
         }
         New-Folder -Name $folder.Name -Location $SubFolder
    }

    Because the forum software has problem with hooks and contains the script, I have attached the vCenter_migration_import.ps1 script has changed.

    While the support KB illustrates the method to directly modify the database connection vRanger table, I would recommend a case of pension to the best advice of opening.

    If you go down the road to edit the database, please note that incorrect updates or deletions to the data in the database can make it unusable. Please make a backup of SQL Server database or save the prior VM (using vRanger connection) vRanger connection for any changes.

    It is best to open a pension case.

    I will add a new element of the road map for vRanger connection consider whether we can allow editing of the address of vCenter.

    (1) each location access & manage esxi servers / VMS than by its user admin - own data center / Esxi servers / VMs

    Select your data center to host & cluster inventory, go to the Manage tab, under you will find authorization tab, where you should add authorization with spread to children, by selecting the account user/group and appropriate role (create custom roles if necessary).

    (2) is not access any other server Esxi / VM - no access to the other data centers / Esxi servers / VMs

    Suppose that the user is given with permission only on Dataceter1 in your inventory, that account has no default on any other data centers, so when permissions that the user will be able to see these inventory items where he or she has permission.

    (3) a super user access and manage all the server vCenter / Esxi Server / VM

    Select your vCenter Server server in host & cluster inventory, go to the Manage tab, under you will find tab permission , then you must add the permission with spread to children, by selecting the account Super user/group and appropriate role.

  • Problem transfer VM from one host to another, different VCenter Server ESXi

    Hello everyone.  I'm new on communities, please excuse my lack of experience of VMWare.  I have a problem with the migration of computers and I hope someone here can help you.

    We have two independent groups in my building that each have their own installer of VMWare.  They each at least two hosts ESXi, VCenter Server, san, etc.  They are in separate laboratories on separate subnets.  I need to get a system in place where some images migrated in one laboratory to another on a regular basis, but I'm running into obstacles.

    My first attempt was a copy of the right lane.  Lift the file in my store of data takes about 5 hours, and the final result is a vmdk file is not set up.  I don't know why.  I created a new VM the custom option usign and attempted to add an existing hard drive.  When I accessed this file in my data store, there is no evidence, even if a 50 GB file is really there. I also tried to install this vmdk as a second hard drive to an existing image file, and I end up with the same result.  The Add Hardware Wizard does not have the file as an option.

    My second attempt was to have a group to create a clone of the server and let it off.  Then, I tried to run an import of a clone of one VCenter Server installation to another.  This leads to an error that it was 'Impossible to determine the operating system called'.

    I also tried to import the clone in an installation of SCVMM MS I'm hungry.  That no longer works.

    We don't have a VMotion. We have Essentials more licenses.  A group is running ESXi 4.0 hosts and the other is running ESXi 4.1 hosts.  What is the best way to get an image from one group to another?

    Thank you in advance for your help!

    Joe

    You can always use tools such as Veeam Backup and replication, it will take 5 hours for the first complete copy maybe, but then it's just modified pieces which are transferred.

    If this post was useful/solved your problem, please mark the points of wire and price as seem you. Thank you!

  • vCenter Server install Question

    Hello fellow professionals of computer science,

    My question is based on 1 single step in installing vCenter. The part of the installation that I have a question about is the destination directories. In this step, it gives you the option to use the default directory or change the directory where the server vCenter Server is installed. Then just below that is the ability to change the directory data for the vCenter Server server are installed too. My question is when he says data do you mean virtual machines? I ask because I have little space to work with the vCenter Server alone. If the data for the vCenter server means computer virtual vhd then I can change that to a SAN that has at least 5-6 to a value space.

    Hello

    The vCenter Server allocates any virtual machine inside the disks.

    This means installation vCenter only data. You point where the virtual machine is preserved when you create a new virtual machine (normally on storage)
