Migration of all files to new Mac

I will receive a 2015 iMac refurb.

My current computer is a Mac Pro 2009.

Two Macs will have installed El Capitan.

I have a Time Machine backup and a Superduper clone available on external drives.

When I launch the new iMac, I'll copy all the files to the first prompt using setup assistant.

The question is; What is the best to use, the Time Machine backup or clone Superduper?

And all the other variables I don't know?

Thank you.

I recommend to use the Time Machine backup. You should check the files during backup TM.

  • migration of events imovie to new Mac without using the Migration Wizard

    Hello

I want to do the following:

Migrate from iMovie events of an old MacBook Pro (10.6.8 Snow Leopard) created using iMovie ' 08

    TO

(Yosemite 10.10.5) iMac with iMovie 10.1.1

All events are stored on 3 external drives (Nothing on the internal drive of MBP). Disks have FireWire interfaces, I can't connect them directly to the iMac.

The destination is another external drive, with Thunderbolt interface. I copied the serious events in 3 separate directories, but not tried opening them with iMovie. Wasn't sure if there was data stored elsewhere (in ~/Library for example) that might be needed; In addition, I didn't know if I could manually merge the 3 separate records events iMovie with the Finder, or need to do somehow with iMovie.

I manually moved everything some time ago - I haven't used Wizard migration; I didn't have enough disk space attached to the iMac when I moved everything, so I carried on using iMovie on the old MBP.

I googled and read several articles on the events to an external drive / to new Mac, but none of them totally covers my starting position and desired end result.

Would appreciate any insight how to go on this issue, and how and where exactly iMovie keeps all the data you need.

    The articles are (among others):

https://support.Apple.com/en-us/HT202853 "update of projects and events from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2014).

http://help.Apple.com/iMovie/#mov3ac6d42c "copy or move a video in your library of events to an external hard drive.

https://support.Apple.com/kb/PH2302 "iMovie 11: copy or move video from your library of events to an external hard drive.

https://support.Apple.com/en-us/HT203049 "move your iMovie for Mac library (2014).

If your iMovie ' 08 projects contain media from outside the record of events (for example, from iPhoto or iTunes) then we must first using iMovie ' 08 on your old computer to "consolidate" your support so that everything is copied in the events folder.  Details for the iMovie 11 version can be found at: http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6c7c9

I don't have the ' 08 version help files, but I think it will be the same - you can check with your old Mac.

"Disks have FireWire interfaces, I can't connect them directly to the iMac.

FireWire adapters Thunderbolt are available for about € 30, which would use these drives on your new Mac.

In fact, you can copy the project files and events with the viewfinder of an old external drive to the root level of the new new external drive (which should be Apple - formatted), but it is probably best to do from in iMovie ' 08, as described in the help of Apple.   Do 'copy' and not 'move' - this way you always have a backup of the original on the old disks in case of problems.

I would like to convert the project files and the events of each of the 3 discs one at a time, creating 3 libraries separate iMovie 10.1.1.  You can always rearrange these in iMovie 10 after you have everything updated and verified.  Some people have reported the update of blocking process at any given time, so update in small batches of events and projects is much better than trying to do everything at the same time.

In fact I would try to first simply copy one (or a small group) project and its events associated with the new external with iMovie ' 08 HD then update to ensure that it will work - from iMovie ' 08 for iMovie 10.1.1 is a big jump.

    Good luck!

    Geoff.

  • Move the library file to new mac, as well as metadata

If I had to move my library of Photos to another mac, all the metadata (faces, keywords, etc.) will come with it? Not in terms of the timing, but the library of faces real itself, etc. Is it as simple as move the photo library file to the new location or is there an official way to do this?

    Thanks as always!

Just drag it to the new computer or transfer using a hard drive in Mac OS extended (journaled) format

After trying to export a video of LR it said I didn't have enough space (new Mac Book Pro since Oct 2015) hard disk I needed to release 20 mg of space, when I clicked ok all my files in LR 2016 disappeared. My images for 2015 are there, the few that I had, but these changes have also disappeared.  I just finished editing a wedding so 625 edits is GONE! Anyone know what happened? Are they in some file somewhere?

  • After the migration to the new Mac Pro Dreamweaver will not launch, said missing menus.xml file. How to solve this?

After migrating to a new Mac Pro Dreamweaver CS6 launch. It is said that missing menus.xml file. How to solve this?

    Hi rustyg12,

    Go to/Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS6/Configuration/Menus/menus.bak

You will see a menus.xml file here - it is a backup copy of the actual menus.xml file that uses DW.

Copy it from this folder, paste 1 level above (in the file menu).

Launch DW. See if it works.

  • I'm a new mac user. I transferred files from my pc to mac successfully. They were in the 'documents '. Today, I opened the mac and there is only one file in "documents" - I had worked on.  Where are the others? Help please.

I'm a new mac user. Successfully transferred all of the files from my PC to MacBook pro. All of this is to be seen in the documents. Opened now MacBook and only one file to be seen in 'documents. Where can I find the others. Convinced they are there somewhere, help please.

The Mac is in itself a system multi-user, whether you choose to create a user or a large number.

All users you already created can be seen in

System Preferences > users & groups

The files for each user are kept separated, protected of the subdirectories of the Directory/Users:

    / Users

    file user_short_name to your spouse

    record your child User_short_name

  • Moved to a new Mac. ITL file is locked!

    Hi all

I recently made the switch from PC to Mac, (long).

My iTunes library was in a portable State on an external drive USB and all the media with her etc, having registered before the decommissioning of iTunes from my previous PC.

Today I plugged the USB drive in my new macbook pro. IM connected to iTunes, however you quit the program and held in 'Alt' before launching iTunes again for giving me the opportunity to select the. File ITL located on the USB key and reloading my library accordingly.

    Now I am panicking.

Im getting the message that the. ITL file on the USB key is "locked or on a locked drive. This isn't a locked drive I can see the remaining files on this subject, but the. File ITL itself appears locked and I can not load.

Any ideas on how I can solve this problem will be minimal fuss?

My library is off a large size and I really need to access this file to recover my library in service again.

    Appreciate your help people

    Simon.

If the Flash DRIVE has been formatted NTFS for Windows, it is read-only for Mac and all the files that need to be open about it, for example the .itl will appear locked iTunes on a Mac.  You can copy all the files on the Mac, or to find ways to use it to use the NTFS drive (you can buy special drivers if you absolutely need to keep NTFS) but the best thing would be to at least temporarily store the files somewhere else and reformat the drive Mac extended.

  • migration wizard to set up the new mac

Did a time machine at the top on an old mac and want to transfer only files in my documents folder, but not the Apps on a new machine. Two use of machines, OS ElCapitan which of the three options I have need to select Migration Wizard to minimize transfer "garbage."

    Happy Friday, nigeln!

I understand you want to be specific about the contents of transfer when migrating from an older Mac to a newer Mac. You are in the right place for help.

You will need to select the top option during migration: a Mac, Time Machine backup or startup disk. Then, follow the prompts to specify the data you want to transfer.

In your case, it seems that you can uncheck the box for the Applications folder. Contents of the folder user migrate then, which includes your Documents folder. If you want to be even more precise, click the arrow next to the user account. This will give you access to the drop-down list, where you can select the user account that you want to migrate files.

This article on our Web site describes the process in detail: move your content to a new Mac

  • Migration of files fails - old Mac again!

What I am doing wrong, or do I have to do differently?

Migrating from an old MAC to a new MAc used to be so easy is not on this new MacBook PRO running OS 10.11.x.  Migration of files on any media (wired Ethernet; and then the shot of lightning; then on wifi), ended before the migration complete, gave no indication of what the transfers succeeded, which offended the migration file or where to take them back. Wifi, ironically, was the closest to success!  But not a big success!

    Old MAC: i5 2.4 Mhz 4 GB Mem, 500 + HARD drive, run 10.8.x

New Mac: 2.9 Mhz i7, 8 GB Mem, 1 TB of HARD disk, run 10.11.x

What I am doing wrong, or do I have to do differently?

It uses the configuration wizard for the initial start-up of the new machine?

    or

    Using the Migration Wizard later?

    Were you running the 10.8.5?

  • old mac can not find the new mac for migration

I'm trying to set up my iMac brand new El Capitan and any transfer of my old iMac OS x 10.6.8. The new Mac is former easily, by using Migration Research Assistant on two computers, but the old guard. Then another told me that the former, whom he knows, the name is not available. I use WiFi, lack of time, lightning or FireWire (?) whatever they may be. I could loose the ethernet to our wifi modem, if that works better, I have a Gdrive mini backup and which might be easier still.

There is another identical question, starting in 2014, on the forums, but the answer is not relevant - I do not have a screen asking you to transfer when I started up the new iMac. (I also managed to get a screen insist on a Keychain password and it would not accept the password I put in place initially at first startup.) What is going on? I've never struggled with any one of our Macs back to 83 like this!)

Thanks a lot for all the bright ideas!

  • Cannot import the EXHD catalog to new mac error message: Parent folder does not allow for files to be created in the breast of this

I have an old mac in 6 years that the battery exploded so I bought a new mac (Macbook Pro 13, 2015, running OS X El Capitan). I have an external hard drive that I backed up my LR5 the catalog and raw files on my old Mac. On my new mac, I have my EXHD plugged and the LR5 (of membership cloud of Adobe) running. I'm sailing LR5 to open the catalog on my EXHD do, essentially, on all my edits on my photos on my new computer. I get the attached message that it does not bc the parent folder does not allow for files to be created in the breast of the it.

    What should I do?

Old mac still works so I was wondering if I could try to save the catalog on a USB (its about 4 GB) and rather than the new mac. Or try to save the EXHD catalog in a different way or something.

    Thank you very much!
