Migration of ESXi 4.0 to ESXi 4.1 on different servers.

Hi everyone, we are trying to migrate our existing infrastructure of 12 servers (running on ESXi 4.0) and we will migrate these images to 3 'Super-serveurs'.

What is the best practice to do?

-Install ESXi 4.1 on new servers and migrate directly to them.

-Install ESXi 4.0 on the new servers and update with the images already stored on them

Also, I don't think I'll need to use the Vmware converter to do this, since I'm an ESXi to an ESXi migration.

Thank you

R

Welcome to the community - do a new install of ESXi 4.1 and then migrate virtual machines - a few questions - do you have vCenter? You have a shared storage - SAN or NAS?

If you have vCenter I would upgarde than the first and if your have available licenses to add new servers 4.1 and vMotion virtual machines running. If you have a license for vMotion, otherwise you can cold migrate virtual machines.  It also means that you have shared storage.

If you do not vCenter but they have a storage shared for your virtual machines set up the new hosts to access the power of shared storage down VMs on the original host computers and add them to new hosts

Also as an info there is no need converter migrate between ESX and ESXi.

  • After the migration of ESXi 4.1 to 5.0 Update 1, ESXi containing the missing data store

I intend to upgrade to an ESXi 4.1 production host, but I want to run through an upgrade of test on a separate machine. I created this using a virtual machine and the upgrade went well. However, now when I insert my vSphere client, I don't see the data store that contains data to my VM.

Before migrating to 5, I had 2 drives, a disk of 4 GB for ESXi, and a 40 GB drive for the data of the VM installation. I could see and access times stores via the 4.1 vSphere client, but once the upgrade only the VM data store is available. Is there a reason that this is the case?

I've updated but has not changed the partitions of data store. I have selected to migrate and keep the VMFS store, which was VMFS-3. I also tried to add the store drive 4 GB with the customer data, but an error message: "the selected disk already has a vmfs data store or the host cannot perform a conversion of partition table.
    Select another disk.

I found this article on error message: http://KB.VMware.com/kb/2000454 , but I never actually removed from the data store. With the help of the 5.0 ESXi update I can see the VMFS store on 4 GB drive, which should have about 3.2 GB of available disk space (the rest being used by the hypervisor).

Recommended someone else try esxconfig-volume - the list, and then use the output to a mount (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1666168#1666168), but the list command had no output at all.

I searched through the forums and Google but you saw nothing.

ESXi 5 has a different architecture, and I think that the problem is the size of the disk (too small) and the partition of scratch required.

  • migrate to esxi free host in the cluster paid with minimal downtime

Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new to VMware and I am familiar with the concepts of other virtualization software, I used, but not some of the termininology, and maybe that's why my research are not turning to the top of what I need.

We had been using the free esxi hypervisor based to host some server hosts.  These servers are running a copy of our database and are used for reporting applications.  They are also setup with files VMDK provisioned very large and thick (> 300 GB!).  They were spread great for a year now.  However, we just bought the VMWare "vSphere 4 Essentials Plus" kit for the creation of a cluster of 3 machine, with a few redunancy and other features we wanted.  We also have a new san to go with it.  We are very pleased with the product and move to her!

On the other invited VM running on this host, (and several other hosts, its amazing to see how they arise) I stop the virtual machine and the vCenter Converter allows you to migrate the virtual computer to the new cluster.  At the same time, I would like to convert it to the thickness of a provisioning. However, because these clients have very, very big thickness provisioned HD, its research as they would take five hours or more to migrate. (other VM moved to essentially 1 GB/min)  These report servers can go without updates the master DB for several hours, but servers should always be available. I can't have them down for 5 hours. There are a lot of historical reports are refreshed by the end users.

Is it possible for me to do what follows somehow? I can't understand:

    • disable the DB update
    • closing comments, take a quick snapshot and then launch the guest.
    • While his copy running (and not updated) main and VMDK files file to the cluster (therefore only changes to files in the snapshot file)
    • on the new cluster, once copied (or during the copy) convert the VMDK to a thin provisioned (given that only about 85 GB of data is used in fact to this topic).
    • Finally, bring up new comments on the cluster at the same time I get comments on the old host (and ignore the changes that have taken place on the snapshot file, since its mainly a readonly report server)? and re - activate the DB update.

For end users who would be about 5 minutes total of downtime (basically, two reboots) which would be much easier to deal with than the 5 hours (each!) of how we are past other virtual machines would.

If the stand-alone host has the same type of CPU and family, you will be able to add it to the cluster otherwise just add to vCenter. You will always have access to other features.

  • Migration ESX ESXi 4.1 4 what to do first?

    Hi all

Suppose I want to migrate to ESXi 4.1 ESX 4.0u1 is it all things special to do or warnings?

Now that I have 20 ESX hosts I would like to upgrade or migrate in ESXi 4.1, what is the best way to do it?

    Thank you

Enterprise Plus is required for the host profiles. Another way might be to manually convert a host. Set up as you like, then export import using this backup vicfg from the link below or set up a basic configuration script you run, although I have not used it personally this tool.

In the past I have also built a startup script as an alternative for ESX so deployments that could also be an alternative. I change the kickstart to each server and just point the installer to the queue of droite.ks.

  • Migration to ESXi and dealing with the VMkernel changes

We are running ESX 4.1 in our group, and with the release of 4.1u1, I wanted to migrate to ESXi. However, it is to be a little difficult because of changes in the service console.

Because I can have is no longer 2 different gateways, I have to keep all the VMkernel traffic on the same bridge, my service previously ran on 10.157.188.x console, but my iSCSI traffic ran on 10.72.66.x.

If I move all my VMkernels to 10.72.66.x, then VMware HA will not and I can't join the host to the cluster that has its service on the network 10.157.188.x consoles.

How can I get around this?

    Hello

We had a similar design, where we used a second NETWORK adapter for the NFS storage.

The solution was to create the second VMKernel port on the host and tie it directly on the (non-routable) storage network

As everything was on the same IP, no DG only required Beach and bonus was that the traffic of storage was always 100% secure and isolated.

  • Migration of ESXi 3.5 to ESXi 4 (ISCSI storage)

    Hey everybody!

I want to migrate to ESXi 3.5 to ESXi 4. But there is a question that I can't answer by myself.

I use ISCSI storage, what is put in shape with "VMFS 3.31".

Is it Possible to use this storage simultaneous ISCSI of the two systems, also an ESXI 3.5 and a 4 Hostsystem ESXI?

Does anyone have experience in this context?

Greeting of the Germany and thank you,.

    Kay

Welcome to the forums - Yes you can - the migration of high level plan is updated vceneter (it can manage ESX 4 hosts both ESX 3.5)-> upgrade ESX hosts (they can coexist in the same groups and data centers)-> then upgrade the virtual hardware to virtual machines and VMware tools.

  • Best way to migrate virtual machines to new ESXi hosts with a different configuration of networking.

We currently have a cluster of 6 Dell machines that move VM 120 or so on ESXi 5.5. Networking consists of a dVswitch with 6 uplinks that map to 6 x 1gig physical NETWORK adapters on each host ESXi... These are grouped into 3 trunks / gal, so we have 2 GB by SHIFTING of the bandwidth and failover. The LAGS are configured as follows:

    LAG1

Traffic to our (NFS) shared data store and management of ESXi. (vmk0)

    LAG2

Access to the network of the VM - groups of different ports on different VLANS

    LAG3

    vMotion (vmk1)

We just bought 6 new Dell machines that have connections fiber 2 x 10gig each. The idea is to bring together in a 20Ggig LAG by machine that will handle all of the traffic, so traffic NFS data store, network traffic from the VM, vMotion and traffic management ESXi.

What is the best way to migrate the virtual machine in the cluster existing to the new machines? Many of the virtual machine are essential, so we cannot stop time.

Can I create the new DELAY on existing dVswitch and put it as an auxiliary card? I'll be able to do it for all 3 of the above both above LAGS?

Thanks for the info Alistar, it's almost here. The bit that was me stumping was that after establishing a new dVswitch I received messages that the new dvSwitch was not reachable on the old host, when I tried to migrate the virtual computer.

The solution (with the permission of VMware Support) was that I need to add the two dVswitches to one of the old hosts, then assign a physical alternative on this host uplink to a temporary 3 uplink on the new dVswitch. I then tag all the relevant VLAN that uplink.

This way I can first migrate the virtual machine to the new dVswitch networking so I can move the computer to the new cluster.

Obviously I can only migrate from old to new cluster with a single host. each virtual machine must be a double for the host with 2 switches, and then to the new cluster. I also had to have the two dVswitches to the same version.

Fortunately, I had a physical rising spare on the hosts of the old, otherwise I would have had to break one of the trunks and re-use of one of these uplinks.

Oh and be aware, impossible to use the same names for groups of ports 2 DV switches, they must be unique!

  • How can I migrate an ESXi host since a vDS in a vSwitch with NAS storage on vDS

I need to move some on a vDS esxi hosts to a standard vSwitch to move a new vCenter ESXi hosts

I have two 10 GB network adapters that manage the ports VM, NAS storage and vmotion.

Is there a documented procedure to move a vDS in a vSwitch, particularly for migration from NAS storage to a vSwitch?

    Thank you

    Tom

No, you will need to do this on a per-host basis.

I really recommend doing one by one, not in a hurry and checking all the networking before you proceed to the next step. Example: after migrating the vmkernel interfaces, check on a ssh connection to the host if it can vmkping the NAS. Before you move all the virtual machines on the host to the switch std, move one and check if the VM networking continues to function. This will prevent errors and downtime.

  • Migrate from ESXi hosting vCenter for vdSwitch

    Hello

I'm trying to migrate my two 5.1 ESXi (port management and virtual machine) for distributed virtual switch but one of them host the vCenter 5.1. I import one successfully, but the one with the vcenter may not be imported. Is there a quick way to do without re install the vCenter?

    Thanx.

If the vCenter is on a storage shared between two hosts of ESXi. Stop the VM vCenter. Once turned off.

Connect to the two hosts individually using vSphere client by using the credentials of the root.

Remove the vCenter VM inventory and re-register to the host using dvswitch.

On the VM vCenter back and migrate the other host to dvswitch now.

  • Migrate to ESXi 4.1 free-box to vSphere essentials plus 5

    Hello

I have a stand-alone esxi 4.1free box and 3 new hills and vmware essentials more.

I've already put in place two of the dells with our essentials vpshere more and iscsi storage.

and want to migrate virtual machines of article 4(1) to the new boxes with minimal downtime.

If I try to add article 4.1 of the vCenter I get a license error that isn't my license of the esxi 4.1

permit to add box to the vcenter.

What would be the best practice I can a license esxi5 to add article 4.1 downgrade

the vcenter? The material does not esxi5 and VMS are on the local disks.

    Thank you

What you can try to do is to temporarily return vCenter server instance to 'Assessment' (i.e. cancel the allocation of the license key) and then try to add the 41 host again.

Please ensure that the ESXi 4.1 host has at least 1 update installed (see http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/sim/interop_matrix.php) before trying to add it.

    Hi guys,.

I am faced with the task to get 6 autonomous, unpatched, ESX 3.0.3 welcomes to ESXi 5.0 (target will be a VCenter Server Cluster) without spending money on new hardware no need to mention that guests who are run on these servers must remain as they are (most WIndows 2003 SP2 servers, downtime would be without problem.

Second challenge is that I can't create new data warehouses, as the area of SAN is already at the limit

Y at - it a Migration or upgrade path taken in charge for this task. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

    Thank you guys

    See you soon

    Sigmund

A few considerations, I think that you are considering.

I prefer rather a new installation of esxi5.0

    Why not consider?

If you don't have all the data critical because an upgrade, you must migrate and knock some known issues.

    3.5--> 4.1--> 5.0

in any case if you still prefer to upgrade

    1. put all hosts to 3.5---> right

    2. install vCenter 5.0---> right

3 bring the 6 autonomous under the vCenter---> right

    4. go on with being level and migration of servers ESXi 5---> you may need to upgrade to 4.x before going to 5.x

  • VM not Boot After Migration to ESXi v4

I migrated to a new server ESXi v4 recently all my Hyper-v VMS using converter. On 8 virtual machines that I had converted 2 of them does not start and have the same problem. When they turn on, they show the screen of the POST from VMWare and then sit to a blank screen with a blinking cursor. Anyone seen this before?

    Some additional facts:

-The 2 that aren't startup are both of the Windows Server 2003 R2 virtual machines. All other servers who worked were Windows Server 2008.

-Do a repair with FIXMBR and FIXBOOT has not worked while I checked that all data are available in the Recovery Console boot from the DVD.

-Going through all the stages of KB1006296 did not work.

-Removing and adding the virtual disks has not helped.

-J' I look for threads where many people see problems of this kind but not with any help.

For any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Chris

With standalone converter, you have two buttons at the top... Convert the Machine and computer configuration.  Convert Machine made what he says, starts a process of conversion, but configure Machine runs the configuration process (the same thing that happens in the last 5% of the conversion process) to make compatible with current customer to run in a virtual environment (i.e. changes the speed control for everything that you have specified and installs the drivers and the entries in the registry so that good drivers charge etc...)

So, you might be able to get away with just the race through a reconfigure virtual machine.

  • Conversion/Migration to esxi esxi 5.0 to 5.1

I went through the documentation for the VMware Converter, and it seems to be able to do what I want to do, but thought I'd ask here if:

    (a) someone actually did this successfully.

    (b) all that I am sure I won't be able to "test" this advance.

    The scenario

I have 2 separate groups of VMware - there is no storage shared networks, etc. They are managed by separate vCenter servers. VCenter systems can talk on the network (not WAN) but are separate areas of AD (with a relationship of trust)

    Source - ESXi 5.1

    Destination - ESXi 5.0

    Requirements:

-move VMs from the source to the destination cluster cluster.

-VM can be online or offline

-Source VMs can be to the hardware version 9, 8 or 7 (unknown) before hand

    -stop source

-raise VM in its new home (new SID, IP address)

Other than the obvious physical version changes and possibly re - install VMware Tools, is there something else I need to worry?

    Thanks in advance,

    Roger

    Hello

    (a) someone actually did this successfully.

A: Yes: I did and it works, you should be able to achieve everything that follows you mentioned.

    (b) all that I am sure I won't be able to "test" this advance.

A: Nothing from such, except that you should be able to reach the two environment of the machine where you installed converter that's ' all.

    Thank you
