Migration to vSphere vCenter operating as a virtual machine 5
Is about to begin to move our hosts 4 and 4.1 vSphere 5. I'll start first with our smaller cluster. My question is, if vCenter is running as a virtual machine in this cluster, what kind of problems can that I meet?
Thanks in advance.

Migrate a CVD laptop to a desktop virtual machine
Hi all
first of all, sorry for my bad English, then, I have a laptop with windows XP and I want to do a "Hardware Migration" with the Mirage server on a virtual machine.
But there is a problem, the virtual machine (which is located on a 6.0 VCenter), is considered to be a 'office machine' and Mirage send an error (in the photo).
I can't ignore the problem, but the error come back when I need to restart...
You have solutions, please.
Thank you
Thomas
Hi Fabious,
You're right, it is only a warning message.
It was only a driver with a LSI card problem during migration, it is now resolved!
Thanks for your response

My plan for a new vSphere Essentials Plus 5.5 U2a installation is to have the vCenter Server on a virtual machine on the servers of the host on which is installed ESXi. However, all the installation instructions I found indicate the user to first install the vCenter Server. How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?
Thank you for your help.
Hi munkyman welcome to communities.
After you have installed your first ESXi host, open a browser and go to https://your-ESXi-ip-or-FQDN
You can download the vSphere Client here. It is a windows application that you can install on your desktop. It is often referred to as the "c# Client vSphere" in communities and blog posts, because it is a new implemented in the vCenter Server Web client.
But for the beginning, install the vSphere Windows Client. You can then launch it and connect directly to your ESXi host. Here you can create your first virtual machine, which can be the VM vCenter (installation of Windows or device, that is you).
You can use the web client or connect to the Server with the client c# vSphere vCenter VCenter runs.

Cannot install VMware vCenter Server on a virtual machine
Hello world
I'm new to the forum. I try to install the vcenter server in a virtual machine.
Configuration of the VM: 10G VMDK, used 7G... 2G memory... guest operating system is win XP Pro.
When I run the Setup it says:
This installation package could not be opened!
I have attached a JPG of the error. Can someone please!
Kind regards.
64 bit is not supported as a host to vCenter operating system, see the compatibility guide posted above. I would try to mount the ISO using the client machine instead of starting from the ESX host, it could be that your DVD image is not good.

operating time of virtual machines
Hello
I went tho a lot of notes. as
Get-VM-location xxx | `
where {$_.} PowerState - eq "Receptor"} | `
Get-Stat - sys.uptime.latest Stat - MaxSamples 1 - in real time. `
Select the entity,
@{Name = "Start";
Expression = {(get-date).} AddSeconds(-$_.value). ToString ("yy/MM/DD hh: mm :")}} | ") export-csv c:\temp\sf-Pete-VM-uptime.csv
$report = @) Get-VM-location xxx | Get-View | %{ $row = "" | Select name PowerState, LastBoot, LastSuspend, TotalSuspend $row. Name = $_. Name $row. PowerState = $_.runtime.powerState $row. LastBoot = $_.runtime.bootTime $row. LastSuspend = $_.runtime.suspendTime $row. TotalSuspend = $_.runtime.suspendInterval $report += $row } $report But they do not work...
Someone has a final script & work, to get the time of operation of the virtual machine?
Thank you
You can also use something like below, requirement is VMware tools should be present on requested VMs, you require the same username password for windows and also have on the root of Linux or any other username password must be the same., it will directly pull Uptime and distribution of inside the virtual machine.
$report = @)
Get - VM | Where-Object {$_.powerstate - eq "Receptor"} | {ForEach-Object
$os = $_.extensiondata. Guest.GuestFullName
If ($os - matches "Windows") {}
$test Invoke-VMScript - VM = $_ - ScriptText "(Systeminfo) [11]" GuestUser - GuestPassword - password for user domain\username
$test = $test. ScriptOutput-replace ("starting system:", "" "")
}
else {}
$test Invoke-VMScript - VM = $_ - ScriptText 'uptime' GuestUser - Root - GuestPassword password
}
$row = "" | Select Name, distribution
$row. Name = $_. Name
$row. Boottime = $test
$report += $row

vCenter Server 4 as virtual machine by vSphere, ESX4 host
Hello
I would like to ask if anyone has tried to do.
I create a virtual machine to run my vCenter Server 4 under a new brand, vSphere, ESX4, armed with other VM.
My question is, can I use vCenter Server 4 and the same vSphere, ESX4 host where the vCenter Server 4 is be managed host? Is this possible.
I did this, but in the ESX and vcenter 4 installation guide his page 16 of the document makes it clear that: "the vCenter Server system is a physical machine or the virtual machine with access to a database taken in charge. The vCenter Server system must meet specific requirements. Also, make sure that the vSphere Client machines meet the hardware requirements. »
Here is the link to the document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.pdf
But if you plan to do that you have to ensure three points (shown in this link: http://www.vladan.fr/three-main-reasons-to-run-virtual-center-server-as-a-virtual-machine/):
Disable DRS (level of automation of change!) for your VirtualCenter VM and make sure the document where the VirtualCenter Server (my suggestion would be the first area of ESX)
Enable HA for the VirtualCenter server and set the boot at high priority
Make sure the VirtualCenter server gets sufficient resources by defining actions
There is also another useful post that describes the advantages of the virtual centre running as a virtual machine:

Hi all
My colleague was trying to extend a hard disk of a server 2008R2 who (1) had a snapshot and (2) was being replicated. The operation has failed and they took the snapshot replication can be stopped. Long story short when I got to him, the server could not be configured for replication and could not extend the disk and a vMotion failed.
Looking at the files of the VM on the data store and the VMs .vmx file we have all the characteristics of a virtual machine always configured for replication of vSphere. If you try to configure replication vSphere causes an instant error "vsphere replication does not support change the length of a replicated disk. After a few changes I can reconfigure vSphere new replication, however, when the wizard has finished, I get a new error message (see below):
"Try to set up vSphere that replication has failed for the VM"name vm"during the creation of groups"vm". There is a virtual "vm-name" machine that has the same instance UUID ' UUID of the Virtual Machine "that you want to configure. The existing vSphere of replication is configured for site protection.
A possible solution would be to reset the database embedded VRMS our DR as suggested here
site server but I was wondering if there is another solution? I have not reset the database of VRM before and cannot find a document that tells exactly what to do. I guess I need to stop all the rehearsals before resetting the database?See you soon,.
Dean
Hello
There is no need to reset the VRMS database.
If you know the value GID... an orphan replication, you can use the CROWD VRMS (https://vrms_address:8043/mob/?moid=GID-...&vmodl=1) to call the destroy method - it is eliminating simple replication to the site of the source or the target.
If you don't know the GID... value, it can be found of VRMS DB or log files. Please file an SR for assistance.
This procedure is already documented in internal KB articles and help using VMware support:
KB article internal 2056086, section "cannot replicate virtual machine as there is another virtual machine with the same UUID instance"
and also internal KB article 2060751.
The admin guide section will be updated as it is confusing right now by suggesting only to reset the DB.
Kind regards
Martin

Vcenter stop while running virtual machines?
Hello
I'm planning an upgrade of our vcenter Server physical 4.0 running on win2008 32-bit to a 64-bit on the same hardware installation. I read through the different docs from 4.0 to 4.1 migration, and it is clear to me how to migrate.
But what I don't know: I have leave vcenter closed for a few hours, while maintaining all the virtual machines running? I want to use the same material; This is why the server will be unavailable for 1-2 hours.
If possible: should I disconnects me my first current esxi hosts or is this not necesssary? They will remain licensed?
Any help appreciated,
ARO
Mark
Hi Mark,
You need not vcenter to be in place for the virtual machine to run. Some features will not work as FT or DRS, but as long as the ESXs is executed, the virtual machine will stay online. Not need to unplug the hosts, they will keep their license information.
Good luck.

vCenter Server is a virtual machine, how can I update the host
I have 2 guests in our environment, I have updated the host of the 2nd, but may not know how to upgrade the 1 host because vcenter server runs as a virtual machine on it. This has me thinking that I don't have the installation program as best as possible.
Basically, we have 2 Guest boxes and a small box of DC. I don't really want to run vcenter on the dc area. What would be the best soltuong for our environment? Can I keep vcenter as a virtual machine? If Yes, how can I update the host it will run on?
Thanks in advance everyone... Chris
I was afraid of that say you that
Well in this case you may need to update the host manually (see for example http://communities.vmware.com/people/vmroyale/blog/2011/09/15/updating-esxi-5--single-use-esxcli-how-to) even with the need to manually update the host on which vCenter Server is running, I would always run as a virtual machine. There is usually not that many updates.

vCenter sql reboot the virtual machine
Hello
Have vcenter 4.1 on windows 2008 R2 on a virtual machine
vCenter sql on windows 2003 on another virtual machine
Where vcenter sql computer must be restarted, what precautions to take for this machine to vcenter 4.1 will not panic.
Thank you
Well, if you restart your VM VCDB, vCenter's going to go down. That said, once the VCDB comes back online, vCenter would come back online. With vCenter downwards, the only feature you lose is vMotion/DRS. HA will continue to operate perfectly.

vCenter installed on a virtual machine and the SQL DB on the physical server?
All the
I'll run a VM on vCenter. A question... It is noticed that the best practice not to have the SQL Databsase(Sql 2005) on the virtual computer
but the DB on a physical server with an ODBC connection from the virtual machine. My client will not fail to ask - why, I can't give a clear
answer to the question.
If I can someone state why it is better practice to have the SQL DB on a physical server?

Access to the operation of the virtual machine guest inside the work-6: 5 on the Internet
Hi friends,
I can access virtual (guest computers) running in VMware Workstation 6.5 - 7 on the Internet with vnc viewer? OR with another method.
Means I want to VM is accessible on the Internet either through "mstsc" (RDP) or "vnc viewer" / If there is another way to do it then pl can help me... "."
Rishi Sharma | MCSA (Messaging), MCSE, RHCE, virtualization
The free is enough, just register, install Logmein, add your virtual machine to your account and immediately, you can manage your VM via internet from anywhere. But of course, Pro version included more features. See the comparison
If you want something more technical, then get:
(Internet-> IP / domain-> router-> VM)
1 - IP (dynamic IP use freedns.afraid.org to resolve the field fixed
2 - port forward on your router for RDP / VNC port to your internal VM (use to recommend different port)
Note: To add a kind of secure access to your rdp/vnc connection, you can use "openvpn". To do this, you need to port your VPN port forward rather RDP/VNC port so lazy to install, you get just appliance here openvpn server and run it from your desktop/server VMware.

vCenter roles and privileges to migrate virtual machines
I created a custom role named 'Build VMs' that I have assigned to an ad group. This role is assigned in the data centers, all spread and no. folder where elsewhere. The role was designed to allow a specific group of users to manage virtual machines (create, move, delete, but not clone, etc.).
For the most part, it works fine, but I have a problem: they cannot migrate powered off VMs. vMotion is available and works, but I need to move a cluster virtual machines to a different (more old hw & 3.5 to new hw & 4.1).

I have two vCenters up and running, ESXi 5.0 and 5.5 of ESXi. Our existing environment is 5.0 and 5.5 is a new environment, I built (we decided to not upgrade the environment existing for various reasons). I'm trying to figure how best to migrate all our VM (over 100) of 5.0 to 5.5 quickly and with the least amount of downtime and I was wondering what others have done in the past. We have different loads of work on those virtual machines (IIS, SQL, file servers, etc.) and I am open to any suggestions/ideas.
Thank you in advance!
Hello
According to the Matrices of the interoperability of products VMware ESX/ESXi 5.0 is compatible with vCenter 5.5, you can add the 5.0 hosts to vCenter 5.5.
Enter the vSphere 5.0 5.5 vCenter's existing licenses.
The shared storage is accessible by two 5.0 host and new 5.5 hosts?
If Yes, then you can vMotion 5.0 host to new 5.5 hosts so that they have the same series CPU, the procedures are described here: Library of vSphere 5.5 - movement of Virtual Machines using vMotion during an upgrade
This allows to check the CPU/matrix series: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=cpu
If they belong to different series of CPU, you can perform the Migration cold (requires downtime) Library of vSphere 5.5 - Migration of virtual machines
Cold migration: moving a VM power off to a new host. Optionally, you can move the configuration and disk files to new storage locations. Cold migration can be used to migrate virtual machines from one data center to another.
If you are using a shared storage, even, you can also perform migrations as below:
1. turn off the VMs system in the old 5.0 hosts
2. Remove VMS in vCenter inventory 5.0 (note the location of the files in the data store) library of vSphere 5.5 - remove virtual host computers
3. Add VMS to vCenter inventory 5.5 5.5 Documentation Center - VSphere to return a virtual machine or the template to a host
4. turn on the VMs and check.
If the shared on 5.0 storage is not accessible from 5.5, you can perform LUN or migration cold.
LUN migration requires less compare to cold migration downtime.
LUN Migration:
1. present the storage shared existing 5.5 guests.
2. after the 5.5 can access the existing shared storage, stop the virtual machines
3. remove virtual machines from existing inventory of the vCenter 5.0
4. Add VMS in vCenter stock 5.5
5. turn on the VMs and check
6 storage vMotion the VMs to new shared storage (you can also perform Storage vMotion first, but you will need to present the new storage shared for guests 5.0)
Cold migration:
1. present the storage shared existing 5.5 guests.
2. after the 5.5 can access the existing shared storage, stop the virtual machines (for consistency of data)
3 clone virtual machines from 5.0 to 5.5 new hosts guests (you can rename the old VM so if you want cloned the new VM will have the name of the old virtual machine)
4. make sure that the old VMs are turned off
5. turn on new new 5.5 host virtual machines and check
6. remove the old virtual machines in inventory, or remove disks
7. If you need to rename the virtual machine name, rename the virtual machines and run Storage vMotion to different data store VMware KB: rename a virtual machine and VMware ESXi and ESX records
You can try to migrate 1 VM first, or simply create a new dummy virtual machine and choose 1 5.0 ESXi host to test migration.
