Monitoring of Virtual Machines

Hello

VCenter is capable of monitoring inside virtual machines? (For example space logical disks inside the VM disk) and we can add alerts?

If not, is there a technical reason not to do so? (I know you can monitor inside the virtual machine and RAM vCPUs and...)

VMware plans to control these things, or you need a third party software to take care of this task for you?

I don't want to buy a tool of surveillance as a tool for monitoring vFoglight / ip and discover VMware will have these features in the future.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Laughing out loud

I don't want to buy a tool of surveillance as a tool for monitoring vFoglight / ip and discover VMware will have these features in the future.

There are free tools available, they use SNMP or WMI or watch the "/ proc" for Linux.

  • Monitoring of virtual machines running on the UCS blades

We are in the process of migration of servers HP rack to Cisco UCS blades. I have 4 blades UCS running ESXi and dΘmarrez from SAN. We have configured in HP SIM HP servers to monitor hardware issues and the status of the VM. Now Let's watch the material of the UCS in UCS Manager, but I still need to monitor the status of virtual machines. I looked at existing Solarwinds NPM we have all our ESXi HP servers to Solarwinds. What I've discovered, is that we cannot add the individual to NPM ESXi blades, because we can not configure SNMP (or we).

Which means that migrate us from HP servers for UCS blades, we lose the ability to monitor the State of the CPU and VM.

How people monitor their virtual machines in an environment of UCS?

    Thank you.

We monitor our UCS ESXi 5 with SNMP hosts and use Solarwinds NPM.  It works well.  These are the commands that we send through our VMA (free VMware) server to a new host.

There's probably a way to do it on the console of the host, but I don't know what it could be.

  • Service monitoring on virtual machines in windows

    Hi people,

We recently bought VFoglight and also NMS.how (with what I bought) if I monitor the status of windows services? -i.e. can I follow specific (or all automatic) services and warning of the they change order?  Is this doen via the infra cartridge as it would be easier than having to alos use a NMS agent on each server.

    All advice appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey Davie,

If you see this - http://edocs.quest.com/foglight/563/doc/Cartridge/InfrastructureCartridge/UsingTheCartridge.02.4.php

You can see the agent properties different (accessible from the Administration-> the State of the Agent). Click on your WindowsAgent agents in the list and change the properties.

The drop-down menu to "Collect measures of Service" has a few options for all, no or specified.

The rule of "HostServiceRestart", generates an email if a monitored service is stopped and an agent is configured to restart. It is disabled by default.

The rule "HostServices" generates an alarm and sends an email if a host service changes its status. If it changes to run anything else, it generates a warning alert.

    Hope that helps,

  • Cartridge and Agents for virtual machine?

    Dear Frenz

We would like to monitor a virtual machine (a kind of stuffs process). Hope we can opt for a carton of VMWare meet this requirement. Of more please suggest about the nature of the cartridge (it is deployed on the ESX Server or machine (instance)) virtual individual as well as the exact representative who will be deployed to complete this.

    Kind regards

    Sundar

We need only read rights in vCenter to a minimum. Nice to have would be view and terminate Sessions, it lets end us our own sessions to vCenter and browse data warehouses, this allows us to browse snapshots via the file structure (the VMware API is notoriously buggy vs the file structure).

  • Unable to build the vmmon module uisng a 4.3.0 core - 1 - virtual machine monitor [failed]

    Hi all

I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed last updated with the 4.3.0 core - 1.

    uname - a

    Note, I've been on 4.2.4 - before kernel 1.2

After updating, I rebooted and I manually compiled the vmnet and vmmon modules.

Unfortunately, the two modules do not have to compile.

In previous versions of the kernel only vmnet module compiled with errors.

I corrected manually the file vmnetInt.h in the module vmnet as suggested here on the forum and it compiles and loads OK

I am at a loss on how to manually manage the change in kernel version of 4.3.0 - 1 in vmmon files so that I can get to compile correctly

The compile error is shown below. Any help, suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated

    Hi James,

What version of Workstation do you use?  Even if Workstation is not yet officially supported any host OSes with 4.3.0 core I think that this issue should be fixed in the Workstation 12.0.1, so if you're on 12.0.0 Workstation and have not yet upgraded, give that a try.

    See you soon,.

  • Monitoring and network of virtual machine failure alert

I'm trying to set up an email alert when one of our VMS lose network connectivity. I'll try the following settings, but I don't receive any alerts when I kill the network connection.

    • Alarm type: Virtual Machine
      • Monitor for specific events occurring on this suybject...
    • Trigger: VM No. network access
    • Status: alert

I tried the same settings with a different event (for example on and power off the power) and I get an alert message each time. But with network access I get nothing. For the test, I have reset the INVESTIGATION period (so there is no network activity), I disabled the NETWORK card and I tried to disable the NETWORK adapter in the settings of VMware.

Nothing alert? Essentially, I jut want an email when any of my virtual machines happen to lose access to the Internet for a reason any.

    Thanks for any help.

Another note: I also tried to use different drivers Ethernet, with no luck.

Decided to use only ONE Veeam.  Their free version offers sufficient data and monitoring.  Seems that monitoring network is a deficit of VMware.

  • Monitoring VM - how to restart the virtual machine

    Hi all

Hit a problem in our environment that can not be solved, but wanted to tender hand to people and see if they have found a way to replace.

Currently have followed vm enabled in our cluster. Thing is watching us to restart the virtual machine VMware tools demonstrated to a status of "not running" - now, the key is to most of the definitions, the system is available in this case, can be crazy, RDP'ed etc, but we here again them restarted as he finally solves the issue we see (for example unable to connect via citrix for the machines in question)

Duncan in the post below highlights in order to avoid false positives any i/o to storage/network activity will be verified after that heatbeats failed to "double check" there is a problem with the virtual machine

Favorite VM monitoring (aka VM HA) - yellow bricks

What I asked is it possible to replace verification of network storage/IO activity and then restart the virtual machine VMware tools on them stops as soon as?

    Many tx for all thoughts

«.. . is there a way to replace check network activity of storage/IO and then restart the virtual machine of VMware tools on them stops as soon as...? »

You can always use a supervision-process inside the virtual machine for this tool (perhaps more followed VM). It acts independently and allows much finer control, i.e. it can try first (re) start vm-tools before restarting. Same BSOD /-kernel panic can be dealt with by VM itself. It can actually be even more robust, not dependent on VMware infrastructure.

  • How to connect the physical monitor in a virtual machine?

I connected a monitor of my laptop, I want to use this screen for my virtual machine running Windows 7, so the virtual machine runs in fullscreen display them on the monitor and not on my laptop. Is this possible? I'm using Vmware workstation.

    WS = Vmware Workstation

Your laptop must be supported using the second monitor as an extension on the desktop, only not in mirror as it does now. This is done from your video settings, has nothing to do with VMWare.

Go into your video settings and see if the monitor shows up as Monitor #2, then look for a setting to put it right (or left) of your laptop monitor. My Thinkpad supports this mode.

Check with the manufacturer of your laptop if necessary. Lou

  • Help with VM monitoring parameter at the virtual machine level

Hi, I'm new to powershell and got the script (from http://damiankarlson.com/2011/01/13/managing-vmware-has-vm-monitoring-powercli/ thanks Damian Karlson) that will allow me to set the "VM Monitoring" setting for each virtual computer in a cluster to 'Disabled' below State. This is necessary to allow a 'monitoring VM and application' at the highest level and keep only selective VMs allowed for surveillance. When I run this script, it is applied VM1. When I try to do this for another virtual machine with a virtual machine name change (VM2), it get error "specified parameter was not correct" in the tasks of vCenter. Not sure whats wrong, any help is appreciated.

    Hello, vSphereUser7-

I've seen your follow-up to your thread on this topic at http://communities.vmware.com/message/1859219#1859219.  Between your answer and your question you mention in this thread, I came to realize what seems to be the problem for you.  I have re-written a code in the other thread, based on that blog DKarlson on and commented on why you may receive this error in the vSphere client.  See this thread for more info on what is happening here.

  • Supported dual monitor on a virtual machine

I've recently started working with VM.  One of my first tasks is to improve close Citrix to raise more than two servers citrix virtualization.  What I've done.  It works fine too, but some people began to ask questions on two monitors.  99% of my environment is managed by thinclients.  I have not found is when a user is connected to one of the physical citrix servers there is no problem with the double screens, but when they are saved in one of the citrix virtual servers the bi-ecrans is as if it were a screen instead of a true dual monitor.  Is it possible to configure the virtual machine to support two monitors.  I tried to change the settings of the machine under the video card, but when I change to support 2 monitors, and then click OK, it it changes just back to one.  Someone at - it guidance on how this could be done or if I am barking the wrong tree?

Help us those in need, so when we are in need we will be assisted.  Isn't this what computer scientists are for.

your best bet on that is going to be the 3rd party.  Another use of the/span option in RDP, you may want to look something like http://www.splitview.com/

  • Alarm, based on the State of the virtual machine

    Hello

I just started to evaluate the vFoglight to monitor our infrastructure VMware and so far, I really like the product, but there are a lot of things to take.

Y at - it a predefined alarm that will enhance and alert and send me an email if a virtual machine crashes or goes offline? The default rule "VMW Virtual Machine power status change" will do that?  I feel that this will tell me if the virtual computer is shut down or restarted, but could not workout if it marked the top if a virtual machine has frozen or crashed.

In the past I did using the base "no heartbeat Mike" in vsphere.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thank you

    Dan

    Hi Dan,.

The Virtual Machine VMW power state change will do as below:

    Goal
This rule triggers an alarm if a virtual machine has been suspended or powered down recently.

    The rule definition
    Conditions                                                                                           State   Action
The virtual machine was not suspended or updates turned off recently.     Normal no
The virtual machine has been suspended recently.                               No warning
The virtual machine has been powered down recently.                                Reviews email VMware admin

Maybe you can add, action of e-mail to the severity of the warning from the rule.

  • Is it possible to stop the alert on a single virtual machine?

    Hello

We use foglight (vfoglight) for the management of virtual environments... every time a new virtual machine is added to the ESX host, it picks up all the rules applied to this region and throws events in the console if disk, cpu, memeory limits are reached, we also use netmonitor agent to alert when VM spill.  The question we have is that our operators monitor the console, but we don't want / need to have the calls recorded for test servers, etc... so, is there a simple (:)) medium flip of a switch in foglight, that doesn't mean no alerts triggered for certain systems?

    Thanks in advance

    Several options, actually.

Easiest might be to create a service in the function Builder, include all test servers, I hope by creating a "rule to include a group of components" and then make a power failure permanently for this service in the Administration-> Setup Support & -> failure-> create a blackout at the request-> suspend alarms
