Move the server vCenter as virtual machine

Hello

I was asked to spend 5.1 vCenter virtual from one cluster to another. I guess that would not big problem, but there is a situation.

vCenter server 5.1 is sitting on one of the hosts in Group A here is the IBM hosts with AMD processors. I have to move to group B which has HP hosts and Intel processor. This means that I have to close vCenter server to move, but at this stage I am lose the connection to the vCenter server.

How to move this server to another cluster. vSphere client is out of the question, but also web interface. I guess that some sort of command line should work, but I don't know how

All ideas

Thank you very much

In this situation, there are several options.   All of them require vcenter would fall at some point.

1 use of vsphere replication to replicate the vm and then stop and start

2. use converted for vcenter convert and more (you need to turn off the virtual machine to get a clean snap)

3 use SCP from one host to another

4 vmotion the VMS to shared storage that can see the two hosts, turn it off remove inventory in one add B and power on

I don't know there are methods more I do 4 If you can.

Thank you

  • Conversion of physical server into a virtual machine

    Hello

    I would like to take a physical server and convert it to a virtual machine on the same box.  I'm new to VMs, so please tell me if this is possible and if yes, what is the best way to do it. Right now, I think these are the basic steps:

    (1) take operating system image current (2003 Server STD) using Acronis.

    (2) wipe server and install ESXi 4.

    (3) use the free VMware Converter to convert the Acronis image to a guest VM on the ESXi host.

    Will this work? Am I missing something? The traps that I should look out for?

    A few questions more to go with this:

    -J' currently have an ESXi 3.5 on a desktop host. Wouldn't be better to convert this machine on the fly to a guest on this 3.5 host, then move the guest to the new 4.0 host once it is ready?

    -This server is now an application server and has a few databases, such as WSUS and Kaspersky Administration kit and maybe something else I can't think right now. Is that causing trouble with the DBs in the transition from the physical to the virtual?

    -The machine has also acts as a file server and is connected to our iSCSI SAN. Will be a problem or I would be able to remap the LUN to the virtual machine quite easily just like I did to the physical machine?

    Sorry for the long post. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    As long as you can take decisions associated with the image with Acronis and then convert it to a virtual machine, I think this is a good approach.  You can convert the server in a virtual machine running on your ESXi 3.5 environment but I would not run a server database production on class workstation hardware.  The performance would be probably pretty bad if you had a large number of users hitting that database.  As for using Acronis I know that it is supported but in the past I have never tried to convert an Acronis image for a virtual computer by using converter.

    The databases themselves should not have any problem on a virtual machine.  SQL runs in a virtual machine and saw complex databases even accomplish a lot.

    Reconnect to your iSCSI SAN shouldn't be a problem either.  You must ensure that the networking on the newly built 4 ESX host is configured to allow you access to all the VLANS required (iSCSI VLANS, server VLAN, etc.).  It is an important step to ensure that you have right or you will not be able to reinstall your iSCSI LUNS, once the server is converted.  Once the networking is configured the process of reconnecting to the iSCSI LUN from inside your virtual machine is the same as if it was physical.

    Good luck!

  • Remove the server vCenter Server in the cluster

    I wanted to move my server vCenter to another machine.  When I installed on machine 2, he asked if it was a stand alone or make part of a cluster (? not sure if he said cluster but that's essentially).  I chose the cluster.  I moved my machines from the old server to the new server and then uninstalled the old server vCenter.  Now, when I open the vi for the new vCenter Server client, it tells me that the old server cannot be contacted.

    How can I get the old server to stop bothering me?

    Thank you!

    Is there a way to break the related modes, or do I need to uninstall and reinstall my vCenter Server?

    Use "vCenter Server Linked Mode Configuration".

  • ESXi installation before vCenter Server?  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

    My plan for a new vSphere Essentials Plus 5.5 U2a installation is to have the vCenter Server on a virtual machine on the servers of the host on which is installed ESXi.  However, all the installation instructions I found indicate the user to first install the vCenter Server.  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi munkyman welcome to communities.

    After you have installed your first ESXi host, open a browser and go to https://your-ESXi-ip-or-FQDN

    You can download the vSphere Client here. It is a windows application that you can install on your desktop. It is often referred to as the "c# Client vSphere" in communities and blog posts, because it is a new implemented in the vCenter Server Web client.

    But for the beginning, install the vSphere Windows Client. You can then launch it and connect directly to your ESXi host. Here you can create your first virtual machine, which can be the VM vCenter (installation of Windows or device, that is you).

    You can use the web client or connect to the Server with the client c# vSphere vCenter VCenter runs.

  • Cannot install VMware vCenter Server on a virtual machine

    Hello world

    I'm new to the forum. I try to install the vcenter server in a virtual machine.

    Configuration of the VM: 10G VMDK, used 7G... 2G memory... guest operating system is win XP Pro.

    When I run the Setup it says:

    This installation package could not be opened!

    I have attached a JPG of the error. Can someone please!

    Kind regards.

    64 bit is not supported as a host to vCenter operating system, see the compatibility guide posted above.  I would try to mount the ISO using the client machine instead of starting from the ESX host, it could be that your DVD image is not good.

  • vCenter Server 4 as virtual machine by vSphere, ESX4 host

    Hello

    I would like to ask if anyone has tried to do.

    I create a virtual machine to run my vCenter Server 4 under a new brand, vSphere, ESX4, armed with other VM.

    My question is, can I use vCenter Server 4 and the same vSphere, ESX4 host where the vCenter Server 4 is be managed host?  Is this possible.

    I did this, but in the ESX and vcenter 4 installation guide his page 16 of the document makes it clear that: "the vCenter Server system is a physical machine or the virtual machine with access to a database taken in charge. The vCenter Server system must meet specific requirements. Also, make sure that the vSphere Client machines meet the hardware requirements. »

    Here is the link to the document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.pdf

    But if you plan to do that you have to ensure three points (shown in this link: http://www.vladan.fr/three-main-reasons-to-run-virtual-center-server-as-a-virtual-machine/):

    1. Disable DRS (level of automation of change!) for your VirtualCenter VM and make sure the document where the VirtualCenter Server (my suggestion would be the first area of ESX)

    2. Enable HA for the VirtualCenter server and set the boot at high priority

    3. Make sure the VirtualCenter server gets sufficient resources by defining actions

    There is also another useful post that describes the advantages of the virtual centre running as a virtual machine:

  • What is the best way to move another server Vcenter Server?

    Hello

    We have 3 nodes VMWARE running with VSpere 4.0.0 and a Vcenter Server 4.0.0. The server running the server Vcenter on disorders gives and must be replaced. What is the best way to move the VCenter server on the new server and keep all the settings?

    And is it possible to update at the same time to VCenter Server 4.0.1?

    Thank you

    Marcel

    There is no problem, I also think that it is the best way if you do not have a large environment - usually takes less time :-). Remove first the hosts of the other vcenter - this will make the vcenter agent to be uninstalled from the ESXs.

  • The former "cannot change the power state of virtual machine: the process has exited with an error: end of the error message" thing again (Fedora 8/Server 1.08)

    OK, this problem beautifully undescriptive I've seen caused by what seems to be dozens of things happening for me.

    I made the mistake of horrible update my FC8 kernel to the latest one (2.6.26.8 - 57.fc8).  Mind you, that's all that's changed.  It was with a 1.06 server with happiness and perfectly good computers running virtual in use before the upgrade.

    After the new kernel and reboot, I had to rebuild vmmod.  I had to get a fix of any - any later that I used with my previous kernel (116 does not solve the problem of compiling) so I used all-any117d.  Update like a champion.

    Try to turn on a VM and Ihanta!, the above error.

    Nothing else was changed.

    I tried the upgrade to VMware Server 1.08.  Used all-new any117d - update OK.

    Error again.

    I have re-run the compilation, this time to say 'yes' to what the installation script to "adjust the permissions of all virtual machines in xxxlist" or whatnot.

    Error again.

  • Unable to connect to the server vCenter because the user name or password not valid

    Hello

    I have a VMware View version 5.1.0 installation (704644) and when I try to add additional virtual machines to an existing pool I get the message (cannot connect to the server vCenter because the username or password are invalid).

    I have checked all the instructions below and still failed to add virtual machines

    If you are unable to connect to vCenter Server:

    1. Confirm that a network port exists and is available. For more information, see increase the number of ports assigned to a virtual switch for VMware View (1026014).

    2. Confirm services VMware View manager are running. For more information, see check which required VMware View Manager services are running (1026136).

    3. Confirm that the network is correctly configured for use in a VMware View environment. For more information, see in the VMware View virtual desktop network configuration (1026498).

    4. Confirm that name resolution is functioning properly in your environment. For more information, see audit for VMware View DNS settings (1026017).

    5. Check that the permissions/credentials are correct for the user of the vCenter server. For more information, see confirm/credentials permissions are correct for user vCenter/vCenter server (1028705).

    6. Confirm that outcomes of the interaction of third parties do not exist with the operating system. For more information, see the confirmation that there are no questions of third-party interaction with the OS in a VMware View environment (1027466).

      The virtual machine, I have already assigned to this pool, I can access. I can access by using the client view and also from the console.

    Has anyone else seen elsewhere?

    See you soon

    You have the same problem with other pools?   Have you returned through configuration under the Configuration/servers view vCenter configuration?

  • Convert a physical Wins Server in a virtual machine for redundancy

    Hello world

    Thanks in advance for your help.

    We have just set up an emergency operations center and run thrus by an optical fiber (so, technically, it's the same network but with some redundant internet). And we would like to set up the servers to replicate all the production servers (wins, sql, apps... etc) at end of failover/redundancy. The best is to reproduce in live all the time... but less than a number of days can be very well. If something happens, systems can be "reactive" or better proactively kicks in.

    Running on SAN cluster could be a solution... but we cannot have enough $ to build a San now.

    I would like to ask if VMWare provide all product that can take a snapshot or perform replication from all Wins servers to a virtual machine by a calendar environment. I think that virtual machine, because we don't have to buy new hardware while double set.

    Vcenter is for this?

    Any suggestion would be great.

    Thank you very much.

    Takami Chiro

    Software double-take doues not need to be run on a cluster - it can be physical or virtual, and yes it can replicate a server on a virtual machine - vmware converter will allow you to P2v physical machine, but it will be a manual process.

  • What happens if you stop the server vCenter labmanager?

    In vmware, if we stop the virtual center server, nothing happens for running virtual machines. Yes, the console is not available and many features are no longer works, but nothing will happen for the virtual machines running on ESX hosts.

    Something similar will happen if you stop the Lab Manager server, or each virtual machine will be cancelled and so on?

    Concerning

    Marius Aulie

    Transit operations will be in an inconsistent state - tell to start you a deployment or a clone and the LM server it comes while watching the busy spinning thingy.  The operation may or may not have actually failed, but it depends if vc has obtained the call full or not before, but the Director of the laboratory, to be restarted, only knows an operation was launched but did not recognition that he finished, will make the assumption that something bad has happened and mark incompatible or failed.

    VM in operation remain in operation.  They may briefly appear to be in an inconsistent state, but it lightens.  You cannot open a session in the laboratory Manager, of course, so no access to consoles, but RDP works very well.  DRS, if you, can decide to move a virtual machine and LM aura it's work that he's trying to find him, but the virtual machine itself will be sane.

  • Virtualize the Server vCenter

    I can't find documentation of configuration for the server vCenter 4.0 of virtualization.  I have vCenter installed on a physical server now and you want to use the inverter or P2V tool.  I have a new deployment next too and want to know the steps to create the server vCenter virtual from scratch.  There are no official document?

    You should read chapters 10-13 of the Setup Guide:

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vSphere4/R40/vsp_40_esx_vc_installation_guide.PDF

    It's all there.

    It'll be faster and easier to perform a new installation in a virtual machine rather than P2Ving the existing physical server.

  • How can I transfer a file from the operating system to a backup of the production running VM virtual machine?

    Problem:  After I do a backup one using ghettoVCB on a local VMFS volume, I have a virtual machine that I can start something happened to that running.  However, sometimes I just need a file from the OS level, which means that I would need to start to get them, but then I have an IP address conflict.  I can't imagine a way to have the NICs turned off and still be able to move the file.  If I change the IP addresses, the software that I need to create the file that I need to transfer no longer works because, although there no need of constant connectivity to the seller, it is locked to the public IP address.http://communities.vmware.com/images/emoticons/sad.gif

    Material:  I have two 4 ESXi hosts to work, each with local VMFS volumes.  They share a private vlan common and a vlan common public.  They each ssh, ftp, wput, wget, and rsync available.  I have a Windows 2003 Server VM which also hosts a NFS and the VI client and other VMWare tools.  It also has private and public interfaces as do virtual machines that would be to make and receive the OS files.

    Question:  How can I transfer a file from the operating system to a backup of the production running VM virtual machine?

    Thank you!

    Yes Mr President, make sure you set the network on this virtual machine to be connected to the 'Internal' vswitch, you set up before turning the power on to the virtual machine.

  • Get use of the resources of all virtual machines in a cluster

    Hello

    I have developed a measure of capacity management report that collects all the use of the resources of the virtual machines in a datacenter. The function that collects it looks like this:

    def hostMemoryConsumed =]

    def memoryConsumed = 0.0f

    def memoryGranted = 0.0f

    VMs. each() {}

    VM->

    try {}

    memoryConsumed += vm.host.memory.consumed.current.average / 1024.0f<----- how="" to="" do="" this="" to="" get="" from="">

    memoryGranted += vm.host.memory.capacity.current.average / 1024.0f

    }

    {} catch (NullPointerException e)

    }

    VMS is a function of type parameter VMS VMW

    The works above for virtual machines in the data center, but I need it to be after cluster. I can find a cluster of virtual machines, but I'm having trouble with referring to specific values for example consumed memory and capacity.

    If I change the type parameter: VMW Cluster how the metric reference would look like (see the try {})?

    I don't think that a query will help me.

    Thanks in advance

    Erik Alm

    If you want to do for a cluster, you can just get the list of virtual machines in a cluster of first and passing in your script.  If you have a function for a VMWCluster you can add a parameter for "vmwCluster" that is underneath and it should give you a table (topologyObjects) that has all the virtual machines in the cluster.

    QS = server.get ("QueryService") / / query Service

    tquery = qs.createStatement("!) (' VMWVirtualMachine where esxServer.parent.name = "+" ' "+ vmwCluster +" "" ") .setQueryTopologyObjects (true);

    topologyObjects = qs.executeStatement (tquery) .getTopologyObjects)

    This answer was simple, all I had to do was remove the # in front of the statement in the file.   and SSO has been disabled after the restart of the service.
