Moving files from old p/c in XP to new p/c under Windows 7

I have a six year old computer of 32-bit Pentium 4 HP, I have upgraded the memory to 2 GB and have replaced the original 80 GB hard drive with a 200 GB hard drive. I think about buying a new HP desktop with an Intel i5-2320 64-bit 8 GB 2 TB harddrive. My old p/c is slow, and XP will only be supported for more than 2 years. My question is can I transfer all my old files from My Documents on the old pc to My Documents on the new pc? I don't know if Windows 7 will recognize them, or do I have to run through a conversion first. Thanks for your help, Rob Byers Surrey, British Colombia.

Yes, you can save them to external storage. Your files are available in Windows 7 - they are data files and work on any computer (as long as you have a program to read them).

    If you have deleted from the computer, there is a good chance that the hard drive
    has been destroyed, and the files are gone.

    Should I change to W8, rather than transfer again to W7?

    Your choice entirely.

  • How to use the files from old computer to new iTunes

    I have been using an external hard drive to store and access my media files to iTunes via iTunes on another computer.   I just got a new computer and want to use this hard drive and files of music via iTunes on it.  What is the best way to do this and what are the steps to begin to play the files from the hard drive on the new iTunes?

    I have changed the preferences of the media folder in iTunes without result and sought media when iTunes opens, also without result.   Thank you!!!

    Media preferences are not what you think. Change said iTunes simply to memorize new media at this location. This is the file iTunes Library.itl tells iTunes where your media. If you use the same external drive (and these are the two Macs) copy the old iTunes folder form computer to the same location on the new computer and it will start with the old library.

  • Moving files from office with W98SE laptop with Vista Home Premium

    Hello
    I am struggling to move files from my PC of antique desk whose memory tracks 512meg W98SE via a generic (freebie) stick to my laptop XPS from Dell. The memory stick works.
    I installed a generic USB driver on the old PC, but not deleted my existing usb drivers. Still, the old pc isn't recognizing the memory stick.
    I received a suggestion that i've got FAT16 on old pc so not recognize FAT32 usb key. If I run the utility to change the hard disk from fat16 to fat32 how to avoid the risk of losing valuable pictures of family etc?
    The old PC has only a single read CD rom for backup on cd is not an option.
    Assuming that this forum can provide a solution to save files to the drive c on the memory stick, my Vista laptop will be able to pick up the FAT32 files?
    Here's hoping. Thank you.

    Best solution - pull the hard drive out of the old machine and put it in a USB external hard drive enclosure/adapter. Who join the new Vista machine and simply copy your files on. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

    Open Publisher, locate the publication server 'old' files (probably in the ' Documents'), and then open them.

    You're not going to get the "open recent" lists more than - those who are roasted.

    Even for photos (probable under the 'Photos' folder) - open any application you will use and point the application at the appropriate location.

  • Moving files from files/control/data files of recovery in a SAN

    Hello world
    Recently my body set up a San and I was instructed to move the data files of the current WINDOWS 2003 SERVER on the San. the way things are set up now, is that if I connect to my oracle server, I can see the local volumes on the SAN listed as disk drives.
    I guess that software will remain on the oracle server, while the data files will be moved to the SAN. My question is what are the steps involved to address this question: can I first of all move DATA files, then the REDOLOG FILES, and CONTROL FILES? I never had to move my data files before on another server or on disk, so I'll just try get a feedback on the most convenient way to do so. Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hello!

    To move the files to an Oracle database, you should close it. I guess that there are no problems with your San. I only describe the steps needed to move the files from a to b.

    Movement of data - and redologfiles.
    1.) query v$ data_file

    SELECT name, file#
    FROM   v$datafile;

    This will give you a complete overview of the data files that you need to move.
    2.) query v$ log_file

    SELECT member
    FROM   v$logfile;

    This will give you a complete overview of the redologfiles, you need to move.
    3.) stop your database.
    4.) move all the data files to the new location.
    5.) rename the data files in the database

    ALTER DATABASE
    RENAME FILE 'old_path/filename' TO 'new_path/filename';

    6.) move all the redolog files to the new location.
    7.) rename the redologfiles in the database (see step # 5)
    8.) create a pfile your spfile file (only if you use spfile)

    CREATE PFILE='C:\pfile.ora'
    FROM SPFILE;

    9.) move your controlfiles to the new location
    10.) Alter the CONTROLFILES parameter in the file pfile recently created.
    11.) create a SPFILE from your newly created pfile.

    CREATE SPFILE
    FROM  PFILE='C:\pfile.ora';

    12.) start your database (and pray)

    Yours sincerely

  • 'Moved' app from old folder of the application, no work in my mac book pro player,

    HI, this is a very stupid question, I installed a new SSD in my MBP and a new install of MAVERICK (protools10 is not supported in more recent osx), I did drag some of the old 3d apps parts inside the new OSX and worked well, but I did the same with MAIL, but now I have an unusable app There is a way to reinstall only MAIL?
    I installed maverick with a USB bootable installation and if run the installer from the computer it goes on the app store to download maverick again.

    I think that Apple brings more programs custom installation. At least when I installed the Mavericks I don't see one.  Maybe there is a button, but the only option was to install everything.   A very good reason to do a backup.
