  Thanks for all the suggestions! I actually solved it mine because I realized it was my anti-malware re - install that messed up in the first place. So I just uninstalled and installed properly and that solved my problem!

However, I don't seem to be able to run Windows Update at all--I get error message A 8024, 000. I tried to download the latest version of Windows Update manually, but got the 0x800ffff error message. I thought maybe it was because that Vista SP1 (which was what the installed DVD) isn't supported, so I thought I would try to install SP2, only to get the error E_UNEXPECTED (0x8000fff). I tried running the system preparation tool and got the 0xc800247 error message.
