    Your model is eligible? You can install El Capitan now. There is no disk installer for use with OS X since the release of Snow Leopard. Why do you believe that El Capitan will bring your computer to a crawl, but the Mavericks will not?

    If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard, because it is more suitable for your old hardware. Note that Snow Leopard is needed in order to upgrade to Lion or later version.

    As a user of long date of Firefox (and Netscape), I tend to agree with you that some type of compatibility check must be done before the real Firefox takes place version upgrade. I never install a new version of Firefox on my previous version.
