Need to add local storage on an ESX Server after installation

Hello all-

I made a mistake during the install\config of an ESX 3.5 Server earlier today and failed to set up a free partition space...  Now I have a working ESX Server with no local storage.  Is it possible that I can recover from it without having to rerun the installation?

Thank you very much.

Steve

If access you the configuration/storage settings, you can add a data store.

Wizard of datatstore should see your local drive and offer to use the entire disk or free space remaining to create a VMFS data store.

  • Cannot add local storage of 2 of the 3 armies VM

I added 9 300 disks in concert at 9 different hosts. They have SAN connections shared between them all, and now I wanted to add 300 locally to each. I got the readers in the server, restarted the first and F8 to enter the config of the car and he saw the car, I added and saved the configuration.

Restarted and went into the VI. a host to the top, as well as virtual methods... went to the Config tab on the host, storage adapters and verfiied I could see the new drive. Went to the storage and click Add storage. Chose the disk/lun and the next screen showed me my local drive. He added, and everything was fine.

Then, on the same server, I went through all the above steps, until he showed on the storage adapter properties page, and he was there... But when I go to the store page and add storage, it does not appear there. Only my existing device SAN disks are. I reread the HBA and drives are all showing under the Smart Array P400i vmhba0 again. but only the first showed when I went to add it in VI.

I have returned a 2nd, deleted the player, readded it and still no luck... anyone seen this?

Yes seen that before, suppose that you connect to your virtual center to add local storage? Connect your VI client directly to the host, then add local storage, it will then appear

  • Cannot add local storage

The internal ServeRAID controller shows two LUNS - LUNS RAID1 for ESX and the RAID0 which is empty and must become a VMFS volume. When you go to "add storage", it only shows the first unit number logic that ESX is on.

How can I allow the second LUN VMFS?

    Thank you

You try to do it from the VI connected through Virtual Center client? If so, try to connect to the CIV directly to the ESX host to add storage. I noticed before this local storage not allocated does not appear when management through Virtual Center.

    > Is there any acounds of work on this? The schedule of the virtual machine to power down? Buy Veeam software?

Yes. Upgrade to full Veeam Backup, but remember to ESXi any level except free license. In the case of ESX, I guess you already have a commercial license, so only purchase of Veeam is necessary.

  • Install esxi lost, need to import local storage

Hello, the RAID 1 call I had my esxi storage on crashed and I basically have to rebuild.  All my current vm have been stored on another VD but attached locally.  Is there a way to import the backs of these virtual machines.  If I remember correctly when I join vmware local storage erases the disk and formats is, since this VD is already formatted via vmfs I am hoping to bring back all my virtual machines.  Any helop is appreciated.  I've been googling and everything I find is stuff for san storage.

ESXi will not be automatically shaped your storage space, except maybe to install.  If you can take the volume offline installation or remove it completely during installation, then you should be safe.  Just re - attach after installing and starting up the host.  He must find the storage during the analysis of startup and add it to your data warehouses.  If its not there then could be considered a snapshot lun, you know that when you start the wizard of data store.  Don't complete the wizard, if she doesn't already you can reformat your data store.

  • The local disk on the ESX Server 4.0 workspace

I have a Dell 2950 GEN III 2 x Quad Core 2 GHz 16 GB Ram, and 6 x 2 TB SATA hard drives and cards 6 network

I am only able to create a unique database small.  I have 6 drives in a hardware Configuration RAID 5.   How can I use 100% of apx 10 TB of disk space local invited several flavors of Linux and Windows.   I understand that I will probably have several data stores.

Do not hesitate to ask questions, I look forward to working this to enjoy this local storage

This issue I'm having is install ESX is 1 TB, why does the rest of the free space not appear because it is all a local drive in the great hardware but I do not have enough space to do a data store apx RAID 5 via the SATA controller.

    Thank you

    If it's ESX ESXi4.0

try it with several RAID 1 volumes and create multiple VMFS datastore each with size of 2 TB

  • Is it ok/possible to add a GUI to my ESX server service console?

Can I download one of the lightest LINUX GUI and run it from the service console?  Also, how to connect using putty?  Should be on licence somewhere?

You can add a graphical interface on the ESX console... Can be... but be careful that the console has only a limited amount of Max (above 800 MB) memory and it has been optimized to manage your virtual machines. He is also set to always run on CPU0.

If you interfaces graphics crashes... it could take down the management of all your virtual machines.

So the question is "If you do that?", then the answer is no. you'd better not.

It also cancels your support/warranty. Your ESX Server will be is no longer supported.

If it's for an experience... go ahead... If you want to run production on this same host... don't even think about it.

  • Add local storage (non-vmfs)

    Hi all

I just installed a test ESXi 3.5.0 (Build143129) on a new SATA HDD, which holds the hypervisor and newly created VMs.  The host has many others (6) SATA internal disks, (especially the NTFS partitions), which are currently disconnected.

I wish that some of the virtual machines to have access to these local drives (currently disconnected), but so far it seems there is no way to add them (for the data store or the individual virtual machines). What I read,

    -Raw Device Mapping is not an option (because my disks are all local);

-NFS is not an option, because all the disks are local, and

-They have just raw partitions, virtual disks not...

I use VM Workstation as well, and in this product, there is an option to add a physical drive or individual partitions'... is there an equivalent in ESXi?   or a workaround to accomplish the same thing?

(My motivation for ESXi test should separate my personal a home server OS, but I'll need to have access to all data...)

All the thoughts, comments and advice is welcome and appreciated

You will need to file a SCSI card.  ESXi will recognize a number of Adaptec cards if you have around.

  • List of all virtual machines running on a local storage

Y at - it a script when it is applied to the virtual center would show the virtual machines that are running on a local storage of an esx host.  We have about 40 esx running on virtual Center host and there are some VM running on local storage that we have to go offshore, but I need a list of these virtual machines.

If it helps the naming convention for the local storage data store is "exhostname_local".  This is the norm for all hosts.

    Any Advisor.

    It must be Friday

    Try it like this

    Get-Datastore local* | where {$_.ExtensionData.Host.Count -eq 1} | Get-VM -Location $_ | Select Name

  • Need to know how to add 1.44 drive VM 2008 Server

    Hello

I must add my Server 2008 VM 1.44 TB of storage.  These are the things that I've done so far.

    1. on the EMC SAN, I created 1.44 to iSCSI LUNS.

    2. Add the storage on my ESX servers

    3 - I created Windows 2008 Server

I'm going to change the settings on my VM box and click Add the hard drive

I choose "create a new virtual disk

For the size of the disc: I choose to 1.44 and change GB TB and for the location, I choose my data store.

    I get an error message:

"The enterned of disk space was not properly trained number or was out of reach.  It was replaced by the vaule of more acceptable. »

The value she chooses is 256 GB.

So my question is how I create a 1.44 to disk and attach it to my Windows Server.

    Thank you.

You will have to redo the data store and change the size of the block. With a block size of 1 M (the default value), the maximum disk size is 256GB. You will want to choose 8MB.

  • How to control vmotion license to the ESX Server

I have 5 servers ESX 3.5 U3 in my vCenter.  Two are using host license and three are in a cluster and using the server license assigned by my license server, that runs on vCenter.  However, my ESX servers two stand alone using the host license receive a license of vmotion by my license server and my ESX servers in my cluster but cannot get a license of vmotion because their attributed to the wrong ESX Server.

How can I get the vmotion license released by the ESX servers who don't need and make it available on my ESX Server who need?  My three ESX servers in cluster shared storage for vmotion and don't have my two stand alone ESX servers.

I tried simple things, like the disconnection of servers and ESX servers in reconnection vCenter, re-reading of license files, restart the license server, etc..  license and vCenter server is 2.5 U4.

    Thanks in advance.  Jim

go to the configuration tab and click Networking, you have a Port VMkernel configuration?  If so, edit click the vSwitch properties, change your VMkernel port settings and uncheck the box that says VMotion: enabled.

  • ESX 4 Local Storage Name Changed - can't change back

Recently, I move my VMware farm.  When I got to the top, one of local storage devices came back as "Local (1).  I've never had one (1) about this before and now all VMS are orphans.  When I try to change the name back to just 'Local', he says that there is already, which it is not.  Somehow, VMware has become confused!

Anyone knows how I can bring the 'Local' and the virtual machine without having to remove and re-add?  There are some VM who really "may not be moved" because of a restriction of the application.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

as you mentioned several blades, I assume you are also using vCenter Server.

How have you tried to rename the data store, by connecting to vCenter Server or directly on the affected ESX Server?

Maybe the vCenter DB contains an entry in database 'outdated' that block any operation rename.

I saw similar problems when I tried to rename a data store, while it is directly connected to an ESX Server, which was managed by a vCenter server.

I managed to rename the data store, but more or less immediately after it was renamed from the original name.

    So if possible, I would

    • disconnect/remove this host ESX to vCenter
    • connect the vSphere Client directly to the ESX Server
    • new attempt by renaming the local data store
    • Check the changes are permanent/accepted
    • Reconnect/add a return to vCenter ESX host

    Good luck

  • Install ESX 3.5 with local storage

I just install ESX 3.5 on a database server that I will use for failover only.  The server has an internal 750 GB internal SATA drive.  I have install ESX 3.5 through the wizard very well.  But when I connect to the new server with the gateway Client, I get an error that says - "VMware ESX Server has no storage persistent." - see attachment.  It gives me the ability to create a data store.  My options are disk/LUN, NFS or diagnosis.  I don't see where to add a local drive as a data store.  What am I missing here?  Is there some partitioning step that I missed when installing ESX.

Those are the IDE drives?  VMFS not supported on the ide.
