Add local storage (non-vmfs)

Hi all

I just installed a test ESXi 3.5.0 (Build143129) on a new SATA HDD, which holds the hypervisor and newly created VMs.  The host has many others (6) SATA internal disks, (especially the NTFS partitions), which are currently disconnected.

I wish that some of the virtual machines to have access to these local drives (currently disconnected), but so far it seems there is no way to add them (for the data store or the individual virtual machines). What I read,

-Raw Device Mapping is not an option (because my disks are all local);

-NFS is not an option, because all the disks are local, and

-They have just raw partitions, virtual disks not...

I use VM Workstation as well, and in this product, there is an option to add a physical drive or individual partitions'... is there an equivalent in ESXi?   or a workaround to accomplish the same thing?

(My motivation for ESXi test should separate my personal a home server OS, but I'll need to have access to all data...)

All the thoughts, comments and advice is welcome and appreciated

You will need to file a SCSI card.  ESXi will recognize a number of Adaptec cards if you have around.

I added 9 300 disks in concert at 9 different hosts. They have SAN connections shared between them all, and now I wanted to add 300 locally to each. I got the readers in the server, restarted the first and F8 to enter the config of the car and he saw the car, I added and saved the configuration.

Restarted and went into the VI. a host to the top, as well as virtual methods... went to the Config tab on the host, storage adapters and verfiied I could see the new drive. Went to the storage and click Add storage. Chose the disk/lun and the next screen showed me my local drive. He added, and everything was fine.

Then, on the same server, I went through all the above steps, until he showed on the storage adapter properties page, and he was there... But when I go to the store page and add storage, it does not appear there. Only my existing device SAN disks are. I reread the HBA and drives are all showing under the Smart Array P400i vmhba0 again. but only the first showed when I went to add it in VI.

I have returned a 2nd, deleted the player, readded it and still no luck... anyone seen this?

Yes seen that before, suppose that you connect to your virtual center to add local storage? Connect your VI client directly to the host, then add local storage, it will then appear

  • Need to add local storage on an ESX Server after installation

    Hello all-

I made a mistake during the install\config of an ESX 3.5 Server earlier today and failed to set up a free partition space...  Now I have a working ESX Server with no local storage.  Is it possible that I can recover from it without having to rerun the installation?

    Thank you very much.

    Steve

If access you the configuration/storage settings, you can add a data store.

Wizard of datatstore should see your local drive and offer to use the entire disk or free space remaining to create a VMFS data store.

  • Cannot add local storage

The internal ServeRAID controller shows two LUNS - LUNS RAID1 for ESX and the RAID0 which is empty and must become a VMFS volume. When you go to "add storage", it only shows the first unit number logic that ESX is on.

How can I allow the second LUN VMFS?

    Thank you

You try to do it from the VI connected through Virtual Center client? If so, try to connect to the CIV directly to the ESX host to add storage. I noticed before this local storage not allocated does not appear when management through Virtual Center.

  • How to remove the local partition of storage and vmfs

I have esx 3.5 on a 6 infrastructure hosts. Each host, in addition to other stuff, I have a 6 GB VMFS partition, "tied" to a local storage.

I did not install, so I do not know the purpose of this partition, but there seems that it is not used, because it is empty.

Now I need free space on the hosts to install monitorning of IBM tools, and I thought that it was preferable to have these installed NOT on the partition root.

Since I have this 6 GB partition (hopefully) unused, I if I could remove the storage, delete the partition VFMS and create an EXT3 partition.

But I do not know how... can someone tell me the exact procedure I should follow?

    Some information about my environment:

    the VMFS partition is sda3:

    Disk/dev/sda: 14.9 GB, 14999879680 bytes

And I have this virtue/vmfs/volumes (ensv16oe:storage1 is the local storage, I want to delete):

    # ls

    48bedd8b-7fe7ff6e - 36 c 5-00215e2097b4 Datastore1

    ensv16oe:storage1 is on vmhba1:4:0:3

    Thank you for your attention.

The restart was not necessary also if fdisk say Yes.

A different way has been to say the least the VMFS volume empty, change the type with fdisk, forcing a new analysis and verify that the data store is gone.

  • ESXi embedded using the merge sees not local storage.

    All the:

Thanks in advance for the help. I am new to the Fusion software. Yesterday I wanted to try my hat installation nested ESXi and some VM to play with some of the features of vSphere. I installed 6 Fusion on my MacBook Pro and then install ESXi in my instance of Fusion.  Full ESXi installation without any error.  I then connect to the ESXi Server nested through the c# client so that I could then begin the installation of my 'test' in this environment. The first thing I noticed then on the client, it's only storage who sees the nested ESXi is the drive on which it is installed on and none of my other local storage?  I do my best to try to understand what could be the cause?  Is there something that I need to configure again or add?

Once again, thank you in advance for your help.

You must add the data store in the GUI, simply choose 'Add the data store' and assistants will show a new.

  • Dealing with the Local Storage block size (vSphere 4)

I have a pretty basic question / easy I think I know the answer want to but to double check.  I spaced that vSphere 4.0 uses a default size of 1 MB, which began to cause problems with our backup software try to attach block vmdk is greater than 256 GB in size.  I want to continue to use local storage for our assistants of esXpress but to do this I need to have a larger block size to the local vmfs volume...  Question is can I safely delete the local storage (if nothing is done off of it) and add it and increase the block size or is there a way of installing to set greater than 1 MB block size?

    Easy points.  Thank you guys.

  • Install esxi lost, need to import local storage

Hello, the RAID 1 call I had my esxi storage on crashed and I basically have to rebuild.  All my current vm have been stored on another VD but attached locally.  Is there a way to import the backs of these virtual machines.  If I remember correctly when I join vmware local storage erases the disk and formats is, since this VD is already formatted via vmfs I am hoping to bring back all my virtual machines.  Any helop is appreciated.  I've been googling and everything I find is stuff for san storage.

ESXi will not be automatically shaped your storage space, except maybe to install.  If you can take the volume offline installation or remove it completely during installation, then you should be safe.  Just re - attach after installing and starting up the host.  He must find the storage during the analysis of startup and add it to your data warehouses.  If its not there then could be considered a snapshot lun, you know that when you start the wizard of data store.  Don't complete the wizard, if she doesn't already you can reformat your data store.

  • How to save my VMs in local storage

My ESX 4 will not start now. all virtual machines is in the attached internal raid local. I would like to re - install and choose to keep existing VMFS, but this option is gray. is there a method to boot the ESX using DVD, then I can use ftp or ssh to download all my virtual machines? Thanks in advance.

    Hi dingding.

You are able to add additional storage space to your machine and install ESX on it?

Don't forget to remove the current storage to avoid ESX replaces the wrong table.

Afterwards, you should be able to add the table and accessing it. I don't know if your machine will start the new array instead of the 'old '.

  • vSphere 6, impossible to use FT with local storage

    Hi guys,.

Now that I understand that when you turn on FT without storage shared in any data warehouse results are displayed in dialog FT in the web client, I met a different problem (so the discussion topic).

When I turn on FT for a virtual machine that is on the local storage, I'm now able to select data warehouses, but when I select the local storage for the secondary virtual machine, I get a lot of mistakes which tell me the secondary host cannot reach the .vmx file (of course - this is why I need shared storage - for these small files). Shouldn t FT copy the .vmx and all that has to be shared in the right place, because I said where it is? I need to move my VM to a shared storage, then move my VMDK and stuff for local storage manually?

Here is a screenshot of the dialog box:

    Turn On FT Dialog.jpg

Here are the current hardware configuration:

    ESX1:

    -IP: 192.168.220.51

    -Data warehouses: ESX1-LocalStorage and NFS

    ESX2:

    -IP: 192.168.220.52

    -Data warehouses: ESX2-LocalStorage and NFS

My primary VM for FT is on ESX2 and try to get my high school on ESX1.

    Thank you!

When I read about the new features of FT and it also replicates the storage, I also expect the ability to place FT VMs on non-shared storage. However, it seems that this is not an option (maybe in a later version, who knows).

  • Appstacks local storage

What happens if I have an environment with 8 guests with only the local storage (Fusion-IO for example). Only pooled (persistent stateless/no) workstations are used. How can I make sure that each Appstack is located on each store local data and how to assign these appstacks users? How doe App Volumes know on which host the user log on to a desktop computer and set the local appstacks?

If you replicate the Appstacks in each data store, go to the storage tab, add the data store and then go to the Volumes tab and import each of them you will have an appstack in each store of data able to be affected. Assign to each appstack using local attach to users and App Volumes will join the local AppStack to each user and ignore the other assignments. Is not ideal but will work until the sets of additional features are added to this address.

  • HP ProLiant DL160 - cannot create the data with local storage (controller, no RAID) store

Hi all. I appreciate your time and comments.

Using VMware ESXi (initially), installation (VMware ESXi 5.5.0, 1331820) will very well (install on USB). Able to enter in the console of the vSphere Client, everything seems normal. Any attempt to use local storage, however, is filled with this error message: http://i.imgur.com/40ySsOS.png

"It was not correct to specified parameters. Vim.Host.DiskPartitionInfo.spec"-" 'HostStorageSystem.ComputerDiskPartitionInfo' call for object 'storage system' on ESXi "< ip address >" failed. "

I tried both the base (from VMware) installation disc and the "Custom" (HP) HP installation disk. Both have the same problem: all facilities, but local disks - as seen while - are not able to serve local storage. It worked very well (previous incarnation was as Server 2003 file server, no reported\noticed questions). It's not under warranty, its going to be used as a laboratory server. All this seems to work well.

    Specifics:

    HP DL160 G6

Storage card: ICH10 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller

    Discs: 3 G MDL 500 GB 7200

Controller and the disks are perceived by the system: http://i.imgur.com/3PAKQHL.png

Can someone point me in the right direction on what to go here? Research on the error messages do not lead to a lot of help. I'll get more pending. I would be grateful.

This could be a problem with the current data on the disk. I suggest clean you the partition info using the DD explained to the KB VMware: Troubleshooting in the add storage Wizard error: cannot read this disk partition information to see if that solves the problem.

  • vMotion and Shared vs Local storage

    Greetings to all

It does not say much on the local storage in my book by Lowe.

In fact its as if no one is using to vSphere5 without an external storage array any.

It indicates that 'the shared storage' is required for vMotion.

But I when I talked to a vMWare engineer said he local storage will work as a shared storage.

Kind of confused here. I saw that this mentioned anywhere.

We have two new servers Dell with ESXi5.

    They have discs SAS6 6 x 300 G each. It's our storage.

We want the ability to run vMotion between these two servers.

Can it be configured to be a storage shared in vCenter Server or when you add a virtual machine?

    Thanks in advance.

  • ESX 4 Local Storage Name Changed - can't change back

Recently, I move my VMware farm.  When I got to the top, one of local storage devices came back as "Local (1).  I've never had one (1) about this before and now all VMS are orphans.  When I try to change the name back to just 'Local', he says that there is already, which it is not.  Somehow, VMware has become confused!

Anyone knows how I can bring the 'Local' and the virtual machine without having to remove and re-add?  There are some VM who really "may not be moved" because of a restriction of the application.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

as you mentioned several blades, I assume you are also using vCenter Server.

How have you tried to rename the data store, by connecting to vCenter Server or directly on the affected ESX Server?

Maybe the vCenter DB contains an entry in database 'outdated' that block any operation rename.

I saw similar problems when I tried to rename a data store, while it is directly connected to an ESX Server, which was managed by a vCenter server.

I managed to rename the data store, but more or less immediately after it was renamed from the original name.

    So if possible, I would

    • disconnect/remove this host ESX to vCenter
    • connect the vSphere Client directly to the ESX Server
    • new attempt by renaming the local data store
    • Check the changes are permanent/accepted
    • Reconnect/add a return to vCenter ESX host

    Good luck

  • Creation of Raw Device Mapping (RDM) is not supported for local storage (1017530)

"Often, localstorage devices do not support VPD page 0x83 and can therefore be used for Raw Device Mappings (RDMS)." The content of the page 0x83 is used as a unique identifier for the device. For more information, see creating Raw Device Mapping (RDM) is not supported for local storage (1017530). »

Does anyone know if this is even the case for modern storage?

We are a dell shop, wishing to take advantage of the ability to create up to 64 TB RDM.

However, the storage of the host in question will be local SAS only.

Prefer not to have to merge muliple 2 TB VMDK into windows to make a record of 4.5 to.

Then projected on the presentation 1 x 4.5 CT rdm

If you plan to use a SAS controller, you should be able to do this. Your drive will be identified as a device of the naa, and you will be able to add as an RDM to VM - only with ESXi 5 (which can support more than 2 TB LUN).
