Network configuration for ISCSI and VMotion

Hello

I have an ESX host configured with the iSCSI storage and am currently working on the best way to affect my NIC I a four VMK vSwitch and two nic

http://communities.VMware.com/message/1428385#1428385

I also have an additional switch for VMotion.

vSwitch3

-

-VMkernel

-Service 2 console

-

vmnic6

-

vmnic7

-

vmnic6 and vmnic7 are both on the San.

After adding the new VMkernel and activation of vmotion, I was wondering why this has not shown as an additional path to the storage (I want to know if this is another question). Then I ran "esxcli swiscsi nic list d vmhba33" and of course, only the first four VMK was listed.

Why the new VMKernel is not automatically linked to vmhba33?

It would be a bad idea?

See you soon

Just to play devil's advocate, why shouldn't be VMotion and SAN traffic on the same link though?

the iSCSI traffic MUST have a low latency and no mistake.

VMotion can create advanced that could generate problems in iSCSI traffic.

No idea why it does not automatically bind well?

Can you vmkping each IPs Eql?

You have to add each interface vmkernel of initiator iSCSI, with a command like this?

esxcli swiscsi nic add - n vmk0 d vmhba34

  • Why vmkernel port for iscsi and vmotion services?

    Hello

    Just a quick question.

I was trying to understand - why we need to have a vmkernel port when we want to use features such as vmotion or iscsi.

Why not use them with a console port service or a port of vm management traffic.

    No particular reason.

    Thank you

Yes. You're not really all that traffic produced by DRS and vMotion actions in your production (maybe time critical).

    Hello

I'll do a fw upgrade during normal operation on a stack of 6224 circulating BPMH, I am currently aware of recommendations Dells run RSTP on switches configured for iSCSI traffic connected to Equallogic SAN.

I intend to set up another pile with two 6224 to failover and then perform the upgrade on the stack of "old." My question is if it's possible to run BPMH on the 'old' stack RSTP executing on the new stack when LAG is configured between the two batteries?

Another option would be if it is possible to reconfigure the 'old' UME to RSTP stack without interruption between the hosts and the SAN first?

Guidance on this subject would be greatly appreciated

Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol is based on RSTP and is backward compatible with

RSTP and STP. So, you should be able to run BPMH on the old and RSTP on the new.

  • Change the subnet for VMkernel and Vmotion

Our current configuration has Vmotion on the same subnet as our production machines, which I am not happy, encourage, that is causing our 3com troubled when past we vmotion virtual machine.

We have dedicated a subnet of vmotion and want to change the port on the new subnet vmkernel.

Our current vmkernel port has physical NIC 2, 1 in standby mode.

My plan is to create another port vmkernel on the same switch and the standby card. I enable vmotion on that one, then disable vmotion on the original.

Then, I would delete the original vmkernel port.

This plan won't work and if so, what type of network on the age I will consider.

Finally, is there a better way that I can do?

    Evening,

It's actually how we run our Console Service with VMotion. We have the Service Console and VMotion on a vSwitch. The Port Console of Service Group is configured with 1 adapter active network and 1 in standby mode. The Group of ports VMotion is configured in reverse. It separates traffic while giving you still a level of redundancy in case a cable/adapter network breaks down.

As you add VMotion for a vSwitch existing (vswif0), then will be without interruption, unless as it displays other says you have IP storage.

    Kind regards

  • NETWORK cards for iSCSI consolidation

    Hello

I use ESX4.0 on Dell r710 and EqualLogic iSCSI SAN.  Currently I have my setup iSCSI on 2 NETWORK interface card to balance the load with "road based on the original virtual port code".  What is the proper way to configure load balancing for archiving a higher bandwidth for iSCSI?  Should I use another method?  There seems not to be too well balancing because it seems that it is only by using a NIC at a time.  I pushed very hard system see if the second NETWORK card to lead, but it didn't.  I activated the option of iSCSI vSwitch load balancing.

Is it better if I place 2 connections iSCSI separated to the San for the better bandwidth?  What is this supported method?

    Thank you

Load balancing only gives you a higher ratio of performance if you build more than one TCP conversation. It balances the conversations between the links. As you have a conversation with your host ISCSI traffic it will always use a link.

How to generate more than one conversation in the world ESX4.0 is now MPIO. You can do it on the same virtual switch (and it SHOULD load balance their) or even better put them separate from the virtual switches and follow the information published on the design of a solid, redundant ISCSI network

  • Can we have different default gateway for MGMT and vMotion?

    Hello

We run vSphere 5.1 update 3 Enterprise Edition. VLAN is implemented in our site recently.

Network administrator assigns 3 VLAN to MGMT and vMotion VLAN10.  It also gives me different for these 2 DG VLAN (there is another local network VIRTUAL for VM).

When I set up the IP address of vMotion, can I change to a different DG of the vSwitch MGMT?

    Thank you

    vSphere 5.1, no, you can't.

vSphere 6, yes you can, here vmware now gave us separate stack TCP/IP for vMotion and contributes to the vCenter vMotion cross too.

  • Recommended configuration for VCenter and SAN

    Hello

I learn to vmware to some extent and have a question or a request for recommendation on vsphere configuration.  I have install vsphere on a phyiscal on w2k8 server that has the vclient and the vcenter server.  This server also manages the back-end by iSCSI storage.  There are two ESX host, connect to the network, each execution of a few guest computers w2k8, and I have a guest configure with a primary domain controller ADDS and another on the other host as a replica domain controller.

Whenever my physical with vCenter server running on it gets the Windows updates, it asks me to restart.  This seems problematic, because I have to turn off all my virtual machines because they depend on the storage of the server that requires a reboot.

I read that vCenter can live in a virtual machine as well, but it seems that it would make me a little further.

Is there a better way to do it?  How can I keep my VMs running in order to update the storage server requires a reboot?

    Thank you very much!

As long as the virtual machines stored the common storahe presented by windows server, you have to stop the virtual machines each time that you update the operating systems on the storage server - storage works fine your forces don't need update as often.

I would recommend to move your VC serverto a separate machine either virtual or physical

  • DV6 - 2173cl: what the drivers of network adapter for LAN and WiFi for HP dv6 - 2173cl

    Hello

I have reinstall my drivers for the computer hp laptop dv6 - 2173cl.  This laptop has LAN and WiFi cards.  I looked at the driver for this model and I see that for drivers WIFI HP has:
    Available drivers Atheros and Broadcom.

I let Windows Update and it installed an Intel WiFi Link driver which is not yet on the Internet HP site.  I have

Do I need to install Atheros or Boardcom WiFi driver for this model?    I'm afraid that, perhaps, the Intel driver is a generic driver that makes the card works but is not optimizing his performance as do dedicated pilots.

How do I know what brand for the wifi card I have?

    Thank you

    You are the very welcome.

You need the JMicron card reader driver for your model.

You don't need the driver of Intel Matrix Storage manager.

The Intel matrix storage driver manager is used for disk raid configurations.

I couldn't find a W7 driver for your Intel card.  The site is down or they can't stand any more of the map.

It states right they do not provide phone, chat or emal support for this card.

So here is the latest driver I could find at HP.

If it is newer that what update of windows installed, then you can install it.

  • Telepresence - guide SRND network configuration required - jitter and latency

    Hello

I'm looking for a document from Cisco describing the current requirements of the network for video telepresence.

I found a lot of guides and I know about what values are, but I want to refer to the Cisco standard to one of my clients. By going to the design area, they have docs dating back almost any before the purchase of Tandberg (so the designs would not of use to the standard CTS range).

Anyone know what guide would be better to work off of?

    Thank you!

    Hello Andrea,

Thanks for posting your question on the Microsoft community.

Thank you for details on the issue.

This can happen due to some problems of synchronization with the disc you are trying to map.

I suggest you use the "subst" command to map a folder as drive letter. Please follow these steps:

    a. type cmd in the start search box.

    b. right click on cmd in the search results, then click on run as administrator.

    c. type the following command at the command prompt and press ENTER.

    subst g: "c:\users\username\Google Drive".

  • Network configuration for two virtual machines on a host

I have two XP running on a Vista 64 host using 6.5 guests.  I would like to power instant message between the two guests.  I use the option open, and each guest can comminicate outward, very well.  However, if I send an instant message from one guest to another, the message can't.  All parameters in the virtual network editor are the default values on the two hosts.  Thank you.

so IM between two virtual machines should work as well.

There must be a factor that we haven't talked yet - any ideas?

  • Configure the host and the VM on two separate wireless networks

Hello community, I was a browser for a long time, but this will be my first post.

I would like to begin by saying that I have always found the answer I was looking for by browsing these forums and that I browsed discussions thereon and consulted the chapters regarding virtual networks in the manual workstation 7.1, but at this stage were still unable to solve my problem.

    The scenario:

I'm a small business working in a House (upstairs) / hookah lounge (bottom). We recently had a second internet connection (WORK), Internet home of my family (HOME), to provide our customers with a free wi - fi. I would use the connection of WORK (during our hours of downtime) in a Ubuntu VM for folding and seeding of torrents. I want to put this far on a network traffic will not affect the other.

    The network:

SE host: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

(Host) NIC: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (Mini PCI)

VM: Ubuntu 10.04 on VMWare Workstation 7.0.0 build-203739

    NIC (VM): Alfa awus036h (USB)

    The current configuration:

Network connection is made, the State of replication physical physical network is unchecked.

The Alfa is connected to the virtual machine and is no longer present on the list of the network adapters in Windows.

It seems that I have to manually disable the "auto eth 1" interface or the virtual machine using the internet connection in host rather than the network of your choice that the Alfa connects to in VMWorkstation. The speed of the internet with eth auto 1 is connected is quick and consistent, but using it defeats the purpose. Strangely, when I go to network connections, under the "last use" for "eth 1 auto ' it is said 'never '.

When "eth 1 car" is disconnected, it seems that the virtual machine uses the network wireless connected to the Alfa. But the internet speed is very slow and inconsistent. On downloads, the speed varies considerably; Also, it remains at 0 kb/s for a while before going to 80 KB/s, then works his way down to 0 kb/s again.

    Possible solutions:

    1. it's a driver problem for the Alfa inside the VM environment all this time?

2 just misunderstood how to set up this kind of virtual network?

3 is it possible to get the desired configuration by filling the WORK and VMnet0/1/8?

    * Note: Only VMnet1 and VMnet8 appear on the Windows network connections, however isn't VMnet0 bridged one responsible for networking?

    4. upgrade to the current version of the desktop would be useful?

    5. do this problem originally because of some settings on the router?

    * Note: The AP is close enough to provide a signal strength of 85-90%

Sorry to be so talkative, I just wanted to be as clear as possible because I'm still a beginner to learn more about virtualization.

Thank you in advance, as always, your help is greatly appreciated.

First of all, I must say that when I did this last response, I've been on my Mac and I thought the configuration of a host of Windows XP however outside the nomenclature of the names of the host network settings dialog box the rest stands as it is on a host Windows 7 as described below, including a picture as an attachment.

On a Windows 7 x 64 host with two network adapters, each on a different subnet and VMware Workstation 7.1.3 installed with the editor of virtual computer network configured for VMnet0 and VMnet2 jumpered separately to one of the host of NIC and I have not changed the settings for Windows 7 host NIC-1 and have network/Internet connectivity to the host of this NETWORK adapter as shown in the picture of Google in Internet Explorer on the host computer.  In VMware Workstation 7.1.3 I have a Linux Guest configured to use VMnet2, which is filled in the settings and the Windows 7 host NIC-2 have all with the exception of VMware Bridge Protocol unchecked and have network/Internet connectivity in the guest as indicated by Google in a browser.

From the perspective of connectivity network between the host and the guest by NIC - 2 on the host computer when all with the exception of VMware Bridge Protocol unchecked there is no connectivity between the two on this subnet because there are no protocol at stake to allow the conversation to take place.

So theoretically and in practice what I said previously, but didn't were not expressly with a Windows 7 host in mind, nevertheless what I said is true and accurate, as evidenced by world real test/use by what I said and with the image attached herein.

FWIW Windows 7 has been configured with the default settings and the only changes to the host's network were those made during the installation of VMware Workstation 7.1.3 so with the configuration I discussed with the attached picture, there is no reason why the host and the guest cannot be on different physical networks and each network/Internet connectivity based on the information I have provided and they be isolated from each other by being on separate physical networks.

That said, even if they can be isolated by being on separate physical networks can still can connectivity between the 2 through VMware shared folders it it turned on and of course & slide and other services so if absolute isolation is necessary to the point where it can be, and the guest still operating system run on a Virtual Machine in the host you would need to disable the Backdoor for VMware Tools cannot provide shared folders on VMware, & glide and other services.  So if you need this isolation level let me know and I will provide additional information to complete it.
