Nexus 1000v and vSwitch best practices

I am working on the design of our vDS Nexus 1000v for use on HP BL490 G6 servers. 8 natachasery is allocated as follows:

vmnic0, 1: management of ESXi, VSM-CTRL-PKT, VSM - MGT

vmnic2, 3: vMotion

vmnic4, 5: iSCSI, FT, Clustering heartbeats

vmnic6, 7: data server and Client VM traffic

Should I migrate all the natachasery to 1000v vDS, or should I let vmnic 0.1 on a regular vSwitch and others migrate to the vDS? If I migrate all the natachasery at the very least I would designate vmnic 0.1 as system so that traffic could elapse until the MSM could be reached. My inclination is to migrate all the natachasery, but I've seen elsewhere on comments in forums that the VSM associated networks and, possibly, the console ESX (i) are better let off of the vDS.

Thoughts?

Here is a best practice-how-to guide specific to 1000v & VC HP might be useful.

See you soon,.

What is the best practice to put on the nexus 1000v vmkernel ports? Is it a good idea to put all the ports of vms and vmkernel on nexus 1000v? switch or dvs or some vmkernel as management ports must be on a standard?  If something happens to the 1000v, all management and vms will be unreachable.

    any tips?

Yep, that's correct. Port system profiles don't require any communication between the MEC and VSM.

  • Nexus 1000v and vMotion/VM traffic?

    Hello

We are moving our servers of VM production to a new data center.

There is a willingness to use the ports of 2 x 10 giga on each ESX host for the uplinks (etherchannel) Nexus 1000v for vMotion traffic and traffic VM.

I don't know if that's even possible/supported? To devote nexus 1000v for vMotion and VM traffic ports at the same time? I think each guest will need an address unique IP for vMotion be able to operate.

    Best regards

    / Pete

    Info:

    vCenter/ESXi - 5.0 Update 3

Yes - the characteristics of vmotion still apply if you use a virtual switch Standard or Distributed Virtual Switch as the Nexus 1000v - you should have a network for vmotion and each port vmkernel will need a unique IP address on the subnet of vmotion

  • change the vswitch, best practical question

    Hello

Here is the scenario, I invited XP and I want to spend the vswitch he connected too.

Is it safe to simply change the properties of comments in the vshpere client, set up the different vswitch, select ok. (without closing comments)

Here is what happened last week and I would like to get feedback to see if I did something outside best practices.

I have a xp machine who's job it is to move files within our company.  In house app, had problems with the performance, of course the bandwidth network has been a problem but also a sustained the 100% CPU usage whenever the application in the House is running. I made a few changes, first I changed the network card to a vswitch with no other guests connected, than giving a non-shared on the network connection to this comments

I stopped our applications in the House that copies the edited files the client settings, change to the another vswitch, selecting ok...  Everything seemed fine, restarted apps and found no problem.

The next day, I increased the RAM on the host of Meg 512 to 1024 Meg as the available physical ram was weak, and I suspected disk cache.  Stop the guest computer, editing the memory and it has increased from 1024 to vsphere...  Restarted and is the reason for my questions, which connects to run the application has been corrupted and would not load the profile.

I should add that the application users often use the method "end task" through windows to complete the process as soon as they are sometimes does not.  Not something I tend to do what I think may be a cause of file corruption.

My boss suggested that he believes that my approach is the cause of profile corruption, citing specifically the way in which I changed the vswitch that the guest has been connected.  My understanding at this point is that my approach was equivalent to not patch a machine and plug in another switch, and I don't see how, which could cause a windows become corrupt profile.

Ideas of the community?  Expect honesty burtal if my method is in error.

Change the who vswitch a virtual computer to connect during operation is perfectly accetable as only the switch that you move to can access the subnet of the virtual computer is configured for - it's like unplugging a [machine to go to an actual physical switch and plug it into a new physical switch -

  • HTML and CSS best practices for Eloqua?

    Hello Topliners community,

My name is Ben and I am a Web Designer. Currently looking for guidance on best practices in HTML and CSS when you work with Eloqua. I am interested in best practices for email and landing pages.

    Thank you

    Ben

For landing pages, you can use a bit of HTML, CSS, and Javascript like on any other page. For example, we use the Bootstrap on a couple of our Eloqua landing pages.

Support for HTML and CSS is much more limited. It is one of the best resources I've seen for CSS support:

I searched for info on best practices when deploying SQL on the virtual computer. We already have a couple of lightweight SQL production servers running 2008 x 64 and SQL 2005. We are looking for migrating databases existing physical servers to a 2008 newly deployed x 64 SQL VM, I was able to find documents of Vmware and turned to the forum and information. This are not the giant databases - of things such as BES, EPolicy and other mundane but necessary databases. Even more to divide readers to separate newspapers, the sys and databases? • NEXUS 1000v and mgnt0

Nexus worked when the VSM was on a host of ESXi seporate as VEM/dSwitchs.  When I manually installed the MEC even welcome as the VSM VSM lost of physical network connectivity and therefore switches distributed.

The host ESXi SUR VSM runs has 2 network cards, a NETWORK card for control, management and packages via the dSwitch and the other Nexus card NETWORK connected to the vSwitch.

I think that if I can get mgnt0 of the MSM to get access to the vSwitch things will return to normal.  How can I assign this interface to the vSwitch?

I would create a new control, management, port-groups of packets on the normal if possible vswitch. Then move the VSM network connections to the vSwitch which should resolve the network connectivity.

Once this work make sure that you create the control and administration, package back port-profiles for the MSM if you want to move it. Make sure that the system VLANs is defined in these profiles-port and port uplink-profile as well. Once those are created, you can migrate the VSM to MEC.

  • IOS VPN L2L, placement and discuss best practices

We install an IOS router VPN on a for L2L 2651XM VPN bundle.

I am trying to determine the best placement for the VPN router.

We have Internet BR, then switch outside, Pix, then inside the switch.

We have installed a card 4 ports in the Pix 515e to provide the DMZ interface, but have not yet configured all interfaces.

L2L is B2B and we need so our traffic/internal network firewall/NAT.

I have a switch for the DMZ if necessary for additional PSS.

I recommend you to place the VPN router outside of the interface on the outside of the firewall. Ending inside the unencrypted VPN interface on port DMZ on the PIX, in this way, you can use the pix to control which internal servers users VPN can connect to.

This way you can your traffic inside nat, but your VPN traffic to not cross a line of nat. Your VPN users also allow the pix to access your internet connection

On the VPN router lock the outside as much as possible interface, if the IOS supports the functionality defined firewall and then use it.

  • charge battery for the first time and the best practices for maintaining the life of the new PC laptop battery

Received my first laptop as a gift today (Pavilion touchsmart 15-n287cl).  You need to know 1.  How long to charge it for the first time or first several times; 2 do you need to unload and reload between each use completely and how long should it take to charge an average before being used again.  3. Since no instructions is a good idea to leave it plugged when you use all the time or the battery should be removed to improve the conservation of life?

Thank you in advance, it has taken a lot of time to migrate from the desktop.  Want it to be a positive experience.

    Hello

Modern batteries and chargers are now smarter than you.

    1. you can plugin and immediately to use the machine, the machine will stop charge when the battery is fully charged.

    2. No, we don't need to unload completely between uses, then as above. The recommendation is sometimes we run machine on battery until that up to 10%.

    3. when using AC is a way to protect the unit during the failure of current, all of a sudden, leaving battery on laptop.

  • VM - FEX and Nexus 1000v relationship

    Hello

I'm new in the world of virtulaization and I need to know what the relationship between Cisco Nexus 1000v and Cisco VM - FEX? and when to use VM - FEX and when to use Nexus 1000v.

    Concerning

    Ahmed,

Nexus 1000v is a Distributed Switch that allows you to manage your VEM, see this relationship as a supervisor-LineCard relationship.

VM - FEX gives you the opportunity to bypass the vSwitch embarked on each host ESXi (VEM) for example.

With VM - FEX, you see the virtual machines as if they were directly connected to the Parent switch (N7K / 5K for example), making it the parent spend management (cause there is more no vSwitch in the middle).

This is a good topic that can be discussed and is difficult to summarize in a few lines, you read something in particular? any questions or doubts we can help clarify?

  • What is the best practice to block through several layers sizes: hardware and hypervisor VM OS?

The example below is not a real Setup, I work with, but should get the message. Here's my example of what I'm doing as a reference layer:

(LAYER1) Hardware: The hardware RAID controller

    • -1 TB Volume configured in the 4K block size. (RAW)?

    (Layer2) Hypervisor: Data store ESXi

    • -1 TB of Raid Controller formatted with VMFS5 @ block size of 1 MB.

    Layer (3) the VM OS: Server 2008 R2 w/SQL

    • -100 GB virtual HD using NTFS @ 4 K for the OS block size.
    • -900 GB virtual HD set up using NTFS @ 64 K block size to store the SQL database.

It seems that vmfs5 is limited to only having a block size of 1 MB. It would be preferable that all or part of the size of the blocks matched on different layers and why or why not? What are the different block sizes on other layers and performance? Could you suggest better alternative or best practices for the sample configuration above?

If a San participated instead of a hardware on the host computer RAID controller, it would be better to store the vmdk of OS on the VMFS5 data store and create an iSCSI separated THAT LUN formatted to a block size of 64 K, then fix it with the initiator iSCSI in the operating system and which size to 64 K. The corresponding block sizes through layers increase performance or is it advisable? Any help answer and/or explaining best practices is greatly appreciated.

    itsolution,

Thanks for the helpful response points.  I wrote a blog about this which I hope will help:

Alignment of partition and blocks of size VMware 5 | blog.jgriffiths.org

To answer your questions here, will:

I have 1 TB of space (around) and create two Virutal Drives.

Virtual Drive 1-10GB - to use for OS Hyper-visiere files

Virtual Drive 2 - 990 GB - used for the storage of data/VM VMFS store

The element size of default allocation on the Perc6 / i is 64 KB, but can be 8,16,32,64,128,256,512 or 1024 KB.

What size block would you use table 1, which is where the real hyper-visiere will be installed?

-> If you have two tables I would set the size of the block on the table of the hypervisor to 8 KB

What block size that you use in table 2, which will be used as the VM data store in ESXi?

    ->, I'd go with 1024KO on VMFS 5 size

-Do you want 1024KO to match the VMFS size which will be finally formatted on top he block?

    -> Yes

    * Consider that this database would eventually contain several virtual hard drives for each OS, database SQL, SQL logs formatted to NTFS to the recommended block, 4K, 8K, 64K size.

-> The problem here is THAT VMFS will go with 1 MB, no matter what you're doing so sculpture located lower in the RAID will cause no problems but does not help either.  You have 4 k sectors on the disk.  RAID 1 MB, 1 MB invited VMFS, 4 k, 8K, 64 K.   Really, 64K gains are lost a little when the back-end storage is 1 MB.

If the RAID stripe element size is set to 1 024 Ko so that it matches the VMFS 1 MB size of block, which would be better practice or is it indifferent?

    -> So that's 1024KB, or 4 KB chucks it doesn't really matter.

What effect this has on the OS/Virtual HD and their sizes respective block installed on top of the tape and the size of block VMFS element?

-> The effect is minimal on the performance but that exists.   It would be a lie to say that he didn't.

I could be completely on the overall situation of the thought, but for me it seems that this must be some kind of correlation between the three different "layers" as I call it and a best practice in service.

Hope that helps.  I'll tell you I ran block size SQL and Exchange time virtualized without any problem and without changing the operating system.  I just stuck with the standard size of microsoft.  I'd be much more concerned by the performance of the raid on your server controller.  They continue to do these things cheaper and cheaper with cache less and less.  If performance is the primary concern then I would consider a matrix or a RAID5/6 solution, or at least look at the amount of cache on your raid controller (reading is normally essential to the database)

    Just my two cents.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Thank you

  • ESXi 5 and Nexus 1000v

    Hello

I have an ESXi 5 but only NIC I am migrating the VSS for Nexus 1000v. I installed Nexus VEM correctly and do primary and secondary, VSMs configured uplink port groups all according to the guides from Cisco. When I try to add a host under the link, I have first to migrate the vnic0 for the Group of appropriate uplink ports and it then asks me to migrate the management port (I think it is vmk0) so if I create a group of ports on Nexus to migrate a management port or do not migrate at all I always lose connectivity to ESXi.

Can someone please share the configs of the Nexus 1000v and how to migrate properly vnic0 and vmk0 (with a single physical NETWORK adapter) so that I do not lose connectivity?

    Thanks in advacne.

control is vlan 152 and package is 153.

You can make same vlan. We have supported using the same vlan for the control and the package for several years now.

  • Nexus 1000v VSM compatibility with older versions of VEM?

    Hello everyone.

I would like to upgrade our Nexus 1000v VSM 4.2 (1) SV1 (5.1) to 4.2 (1) SV2(2.1a) because we are heading of ESXi 5.0 update 3 to 5.5 ESXi in the near future. I was not able to find a list of compatibility for the new version when it comes to versions VEM, I was wondering if the new VSM supports older versions VEM, we are running, so I must not be upgraded all at once. I know that it supports two versions of our ESXi.

    Best regards

    Pete

You found documentation, transfer of the station from 1.5 to latest code is supported in a VSM perspective.  Which is not documented is the small one on the MEC.  In general, the VSM is backward compatible with the old VEM (to a degree, the degree of which is not published).  Although it is not documented (AFAIK), verbal comprehension is that MEC can be a version or two behind, but you should try to minimize the time that you run in this configuration.

If you plan to run mixed versions VEM when getting your upgraded hosts (totally fine that's how I do mine), it is better to move to this enhanced version of VEM as you upgrade the hypervisor.  Since you go ESXi 5.0 5.5, you create an ISO that contains the Cisco VIBs, your favorite driver async (if any), and the image of ESXi 5.5 all grouped together so the upgrade for a given host is all of a sudden.  You probably already have this cold technique, but the links generated by the Cisco tool below will show you how to proceed.  It also gives some URLS handy to share with each person performing functions on this upgrade.  Here is the link:

Nexus 1000V and ESX upgrade utility

PS - the new thing takes clones your VSMs offline.  Even if they are fairly easy to recover, having a real pure clone will save some sauce secret that otherwise you may lose in a failure scenario.  Just turn off a VSM, then right click and clone.  Turn on again this MSM and failover pair HA, then take to the bottom of it and get a clone of it.  So as a security measure, this upgrade, get your clones currently out of the current 1.5 VSMs, then some time after your upgrade some clones offline, saved from the new version.
