NIC Teaming port group

Hi, if I have two physical cards on my ESX host and a group of ports on the vSwitch I selects two adapters to be 'Active' (the tab grouping of NETWORK cards), network traffic automatically load balance bewteen the two NETWORK cards? Or will be just to use a NIC and use the other if this switch NIC/phyiscal descendant? Is there something specific that should be set by checking the Load Balancing option?

Screenshot attached.

Thank you

The virtual machine will use a physical connection.   Here is a link to the details.   http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/virtual_networking_concepts.PDF

  • Override the port NIC teaming with powercli group?

    Hi all

Any chance you could lend a hand?

I have a powercli script that goes out to all of my ESX 4.0 host and add a new port group to vswitch1 with a new VLAN ID. That works well, but I also need to override the NIC teaming on this port group, to set an active NIC and the other to be the backup. (we put NIC failover port groups not the vswitches).

I see ways to change NIC vswitches grouping settings, but am yet to find a way to change the settings of the NIC collection for groups of ports themselves with powercli?

    Can someone shine a light?

    Thank you

    Try something like:

    Get-VirtualPortGroup-name '' | Get-NicTeamingPolicy | Game-NicTeamingPolicy - MakeNicActive "vmnic1" - MakeNicStandby "vmnic0".

    I hope this helps!

  • VMware port group vs vswitch ensures networking nic

    Hi all

I'm a bit confused as the eve of NIC on vswitch and network card set watches over the port group

    for example

If I have an ESXi server with 3 vmnic1 network card, vmnic2 and vmnic3

and I have set up a 'network' vswitch, where I put vmnic1 and active vmnic2 and vmnic2 as before

    I create 1 portgroup

    (1) "data1" where I put on the vmnic3 level as asset and vmnic1 portgroup, vmnic2 as Eve

How things work it seems door as vmnic 3 of Eve upgraded vswitch and intervenes at the level of the portgroup

can clarify you for me please?

On the group level on the port you van ignore the order of failover that is set to the level of vSwitch, so in this way, you can define a failover different/NIC teaming for any group of port defined on this vSwitch.

It is not necessary to do so, if your Setup doesn't require it.

  • NIC Teaming: ID v-port-based load balancing

    Hey all,.

According to VMWare ESXi does not support physical host interfaces LACP trunks.  I was told that the NIC teaming feature will allow you to specify which physical interface traffic is pushed through the source IP/VM database.  I was able to locate the NIC teaming settings in load balancing vSwitch properties, but I cannot determine how to set up a specific virtual machine, vNIC or source/destination IP address to use a specific physical NIC

Can someone tell me how to proceed?  The setting of balancing says "Route based on originating virtual port ID"...  This isn't not always tell me how to assign a virtual interface to a specific physical interface.  Ideally, I would like to specify a destination IP address and a physical interface to use when accessing this IP address.  Simply being able to map a group of virtual machines to use a physical interface (without going through the VM groups on different vSwitches) would do well.

    Any suggestion is appreciated.

    Thank you!

Intellectual property of hash based mode, 1Gbit/s physics 2 network cards can be effectively combined in 1 2 Gbps link?  Meaning regardless of VM, source/destinaltion IP/network, traffic etc will be shared between the two network cards until they are both is completely saturated?

No, certainly not. It's like Weinstein explained. The NETWORK card used is based on the source and destination IP.

You can take a look at VMware Virtual Networking Concepts that explains the different modes in detail.

Route based on the hash of the IP ... Regularity of the distribution of traffic depends on the number of TCP/IP sessions for unique destinations. There is no advantage for the bulk transfer between a single pair of hosts.

  • Several physical NIC cards connected to vSwitch / Port Group

    Hello

I have several physical NETWORK adapter on a host connected to a single vSwitch / port group, does this mean that the speed of the network is shared by all of the physical NIC, or I have to do something special to enable this feature?

    Please see attached .jpg

    Thanks in advance.

If all of your network adapters is active in the nic teaming configuration, you must have a physical switch that supports the aggregation of links and you must configure it. The ESX itself does not have this kind of work.

Actually is a bad idea to let all NICs connected without having to configure the nic teaming (1 active and others waiting for failover) or without going through the aggregation of links.

  • Are these viable designs for NIC teaming on UCS C-Series?

Is this a viable design on ESXi 5.1 on UCS C240 with 2 Quad port nic cards?

Option A) VMware consolidation of NIC with the load balancing of interfaces vmnic in an configuration active/active through alternate and redundant physical paths to the network.

Option B) VMware consolidation of NIC with the load balancing of the interfaces in a configuration vmnic Active/Standy by alternate and redundant paths of material to the network.

    Option A:

    Option B:

    Thank you.

She really comes down to what means active/active N ° and type of switches upstream.  For ESXi NIC teaming - Active/Active load balancing provided the opportunity for all network links be active for devices different comments.  Grouping can be configured in a few different methods.  The default value is by ID of virtual port where each guest computer is assigned to an active port and then also a spare port.  Traffic to this host would be only sent on a connection at a time.

For example, suppose 2 Ethernet connections and 4 guests on the ESX host.  Link 1 for switch 1 would be active for 1 and 2 and 2 link to switch 2 backup for 1 and 2.  However 2 link to switch 2 would be active for 3 guests and 4 and 1 link 1 switch backup for 1 and 2 comments.

The following provides details on the configuration of the card NETWORK is teaming up with VMWare:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1004088

There are also opportunities for LACP configuration in some situations, but there is a material special considerations on the side of the switch, but also on the host side.

Keep in mind that the vSwitch does not blindly broadcast/multicast/unknown unicast on all ports.  He has a strict set of rules that prevents loopback.  It is not a traditional L2 redirector so loops are not taken into account in an active/active environment.

  • How the Virtual Machine port group communication?

How the Virtual Machine port group communication?

Port group is virtual aggregation of ports on vSwitch. A vSwitch can have multiple Port groups which separate the different network traffic. Port groups communicate with vSwitch, and we have physical network maps on vSwitch which establish communication with the external network. We can configure security, NIC teaming, traffic shapping nework political and at the level of the port groups. Once the port group is created, we can assign to vNIC

    How to establish communication?

Public network > Switch L3 Core > ESXi physical adapter > vSwitch > groups > virtual NIC > Virtual Machine

Virtual machine connect to the physical map using vNIC coming on Port groups. This is how it works.

  • ESXi 5.5 nic teaming/LAG with trunking does not but it works on ESX 4.0.  Both are on the same switch. What gives?

I have two hosts (vhost1 = ESX 4.0, vhost2 = 5.5 ESX) both are configured for the Group and both connected to a switch of 1544 Adtran L3 (named sw01).  vhost1 has been in production for several years with the config below and has been solid as a rock.  I'm trying to reproduce the installation of grouping/collage on vhost2 and it does not work when are associated but will work when you are using a single NIC (with or without aggregation).

To be more specific about what does not work, two virtual servers have "Network server" (vlan 8) defined as a group of ports. Both physical and virtual servers on the same vlan cannot ping or resolve queries arp for virtual machines on vhost2.    Everything that is sent from a different subnet can connect to the virtual machines on each virtual server.

So the question is this: why not ESX 5.5 works as ESX 4.0 when the configs are also near identical, as I can make them and they are connected to the same switch?

Thanks for any input you can provide!

    Hello

Do you share the vmnic for ESXi management and network of the VM?

Try to follow the steps in this KB: VMware KB: NICs using EtherChannel grouping allows intermittent network connectivity in ESXi

Trying to team adapters using EtherChannel, network connectivity is disrupted on an ESXi host. This problem occurs because grouping NIC properties will not propagate to the network management portgroup in ESXi.

When you configure the ESXi host for grouping of NETWORK cards in attributing to the road based on ip hashload balancing, this configuration is not propagated to the portgroup management network.

    Workaround

Note: to reduce the possibility network loss please change the route based on the hash of IP using this method of balancing load vSwitch

    1. Close all ports in the physical switch team leaving a single port as active.
    2. Change the Route based on ip hash vSwitch and load balancing management Portgroup.
    3. Set up the physical switch port channel.
    4. Activate the physical switch ports.

Notes: Using this method will avoid a loss of connection when you switch to a port channel. Also make sure that under the properties for vmk portgroup # used for network management you tick the box "Enabled".

  • Consolidation and failover for the uplink on the Distributed switch port group

    Hello

I have a problem with the implementation of a distributed switch, and I don't know I'm missing something!

I have a few guests with 4 of each physical cards. On the host eash I configured 2 virtual switches (say A and B), with 2 physical network by vSwitch using etherchannel adapter. Everything works fine for etherchannel and route based on the hash of the IP for the latter.

Recently, I decided to create two distributed switches and move the respective physical ports of virtual switches to this distributed switches. Once again, I want to configure etherchannel and route based on the hash of the IP. But when I open the settings for the uplink port group, aggregation and failover policies are grayed out and cannot be changed. Apparently they inherit configuration also but I don't know where!

    Chantal says:

You must set the card NIC teaming policy on trade in reality and not on the uplink group more expected.

  • NIC teaming on HP Blade

I use HP Blades as my servers to host ESX 3.5 update 3. I have only 2 NETWORK ports on each host and I would like to implement the NIC teaming, but I'm confused on whether I would run into any problems if the vmnic should fail.

I set up vswtich0 with three groups of ports - the primary NETWORK card for my Console Service (VLAN12) and port groups Vmotion (VLAN3) is vmnic0 with vmnic1 failover

I also created another group of ports for the VMservers vmnetwork (no VLANs) on vswitch0 with vmnic1 as a principal port with vmnic0 my failover group.

What concerns me, is the port group settings switch to vmnic1? For example, if vmnic0 tilt vmnic1, will I run into issues because the Service Console is running on VLAN12 and Vmotion works on VLAN3, and vice versa with the port vmnetwork group.

    Hello

You will need to implement VST where you master all the VLAN to the vSwitch through each Teddy.

    Hello

As you install apps from the CPU on the server of the UCS, speech application team listed their recommendations here.

    http://docwiki.Cisco.com/wiki/QoS_Design_Considerations_for_Virtual_UC_with_UCS#Guidelines_for_Physical_LAN_Links.2C_Trunking_and_Traffic_Sizing

You can create a NIC teaming in the ESXi via vSphere client software for traffic from from / destined for virtual machines.

For C200, we have only one management port and if you use the management for MMIC traffic port, switch option is not available.

However, if you choose to use host for MMIC traffic NETWORK ports, you can set up CIMC NIC mode for 'LOM shared' which provides the NIC teaming options.
