Off-host backup methods (like HDS ShadowImage, EMC BCVS, etc.) works in a virtual machine?

HI Experts,

Off-host backup methods (like HDS ShadowImage, EMC BCVS, etc.) works in a Virtual Machine (if the volume to be backed up is created on RDM)?

This means that each such VM who have need to have backup off-host using ShadowImage have their LUNS dedicated (using RDM) and not on VMFS volumes.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

If you find this answer useful please consider giving points by checking the correct or helpful answer.

I'm not sure it's really a 'problem '.  If you take a snapshot of the side storage (BCV, NetApp snapshot, whatever) you're after a point-in-time backup.  The fact that changes to virtual RDM will make a delta file while the snapshot of the virtual machine exists doesn't make much difference insofar as what is in the snapshot storage - except that he has invited at least FS compliant (compatible app is another debate).  You always have a snapshot of time point, and it is always the data that exist when you trigger the process.

So, with virtual mode, you can use instant VMware (using RAS as VMware tools are installed) and get a consistent snapshot of comments-FS.

Physical RDM mode, it's tools, usually from the storage provider, in the prompt flush/being suspended.  NetApp SnapDrive one is an example of this.  SnapDrive one uses the same win32 calls to rinse the NTFS.  You can put SnapManager for Exchange, SQL, SharePoint, in addition to this, and now you're app - are as well.

You can make snapshots of storage of data a VMFS or NFS warehouses.  You would need a script or a tool to clean virtual machines.  There is an example of a very simple script in NetApp TR3428 (http://www.netapp.com/us/library/technical-reports/tr-3428.html), or if you actually NetApp, you can use IVMS (http://www.netapp.com/us/library/technical-reports/tr-3737.html).  These scripts don't rinse apps by themselves, but depending on the application, you can incorporate pre/post scripts in the virtual machine.

Enjoy!

    Hi all

    Recently I attend the interview. a guy asked me this question

    < police = "Times New Roman, serif" >all virtual machines on my power off ESX at the same time host < / police >< / police >?

    What was the cause of the highest of the error, how to troubleshoot the error.please me.anybody guide to address this problem?

    Thanks

    If all the virtual machines if lower at the same time, my bet would be VMware HA. Just for fun, build it inside your head:

    (1) 8 ESX nodes, all service consoles connected to a unique management switch.

    (2) now to create a cluster of these nodes, put all your virtual machines in there and activate HA, choose ' host isolation response: power off.

    (3) draw power from your management switch. HA on each host will deduct that the host is isolated-> turn off all the virtual machines.

    Each host will think the same thing, and hop find you with all virtual machines down to the time in the whole of the cluster. Have seen this one several times when people go and upgrade their management switches in the evening ("hey, it's only management").

  • Update Manager upgrade of the ESXi host that he is running in a virtual machine does

    That is the question.  Here is some information.  We were a completely virtualized environment for several years.  2 guests ESXi collocated 5.5 to different data centers connected of course by a VPN site-to site.  The VPN itself is provided by VMs and vCenter runs in a VM to one of the sites as Update Manager is to proceed with installing it. If the vCenter and/or VPN VMs are down, we have a very cool backup method to gain access to and manage ESXi and its console.   Some of you who read the rest of the present will be tempted to suggest to architecting our environment differently, but we are very pleased with the way it is thank you very much :-)  Appreciate all the answers but really just responded to this specific question.

    The reason why we want to Update Manager is really just to be able to upgrade easily ESXi in the future without enter in the console and the execution of orders, etc.  I realize the documentation and blogs on this topic that ESXi may need to go into maintenance mode and stop the virtual machines running on it (not a cluster if no migration) how ESXi is lose connection to the Update Manager (if the remote host) or a stop Update Manager (if the local host).  So the question is, is that the process of updating managed by Update Manager an atomic operation at that crucial moment or a sequence of operations depend on continuous connectivity and control of Update Manager.  Ddoes ESXi, then perform the upgrade and restart regardless - that would be great - or he'll just stand there in maintenance mode to learn more about disconnected now / stop Manager update pending.

    Your answers are greatly appreciated.

    Please, tell me if I understand you:

    Ask yourself if you can upgrade the host running Update Manager VM? And you cannot migrate the virtual to another host machine because there is no cluster in place and no shared storage?

    If your answer is YES to both questions, I can tell you that you cannot use Update Manager, since you must put your host in Maintenance Mode and therefore you will need to stop all virtual machines running, including the VM Manager Update.

  • Can I use the same product key in a virtual machine that I use for the Windows installation that hosts the VM?

    I have a valid Windows 7 Professional installation as well as a copy of VMWare Workstation running on Windows 7. I would like to install a VM Windows 7 that I can "break" without worrying about my host system. Can I use the same product key for the virtual machine that I currently use on the host system, or do I have to buy a different product key for the virtual machine?

    No, you will need to purchase an additional license. The virtual machine is considered to be a separate computer.

  • NLB - two virtual machines can't ping eachother when on separate hosts

    Greetings,

    I've been running some tests with NLB on the different desks as recommended here:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1006558 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 42912404 & StateID = 0% 200% 2041454115

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1006778 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 42912404 & StateID = 0% 200% 2041454115

    I found that Unicast works better in our network environment, but it is still a problem:

    In http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1006580 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 42912690 & StateID = 0% 200% 2041454807

    He says: "since all hosts in the cluster have the same IP Address and the same MAC address, there is no communication possible inter-hote between the hosts configured in unicast mode.» A second NETWORK adapter is required for any other host communication. »

    However, even with a second NETWORK adapter the virtual machines cannot ping eachother when they are on a different esx host. When they are on the same host esx virtual machines can ping each other. Also, when they are on different hosts, so that a virtual machine cannot reach each other on their dedicated IP address, virtual machines can reach other when ping the second card NETWORK (the one without an informed gateway).

    For example, the next 2 guests are connected unicast:

    VM1 has 2 network cards, NIC1 = 172.18.18.41 with gateway (dedicated IP) and NIC2 = 172.18.18.43 without gateway / WLBS enabled.

    VM2 has 2 network cards, NIC1 = 172.18.18.42 with gateway (dedicated IP) and NIC2 = 172.18.18.44 without gateway / WLBS enabled.

    When on the same ESX host VM1 can reach VM2 on 172.18.18.42 and 172.18.18.44, and vice versa.

    When on ESX different hosts VM1 cannot reach VM2 on 172.18.18.42 but it can reach VM2 thanks 172.18.18.44. In this case VM2 cannot reach VM1 on 172.18.18.41 but can reach VM1 on 172.18.18.43.

    I followed and applied the settings recommended in this article: http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1556 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 42912404 & StateID = 0% 200% 2041454115

    I even tried the kb from microsoft as shown here: http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/898867 even if the virtual machines have 2 network cards, but of course that did not help either.

    Does anyone have an idea what is happening here?

    The fact that it works on the same host, but not on different hosts type advanced to a network within VMware issue.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bram

    It seems that ir can be a problem of IP routing, even with the hosts on the same subnet.  Make sure that your routing table that traffic on each that is to/from your mgmt that ips turns off your local management interface.  If it isn't, then update your routing table in order to.

    Or, you could try setting up your mgmt network cards on a different subnet from your IP NLB.  I suspect that this will solve the problem.

  • Attached device PCI host to query for virtual machines

    In the web client, on a host, we can see in the peripheral PCI if one or several virtual machines are attached to it. The field is called "VMs using it."

    I was passing through the API Explorer but unable to find a way up to even with Orchestrator - to find out if a host PCI device is to be used by any machine virtual or not. Is this possible?

    If anyone is interested, this is the solution;

    var features = host.configManager.graphicsManager.graphicsInfo;

    for each {(device in devices)

    If (device.pciId.match("46")) {}

    System.log (Device.VM);

  • Host multihomed - Routing of Virtual Machines

    Hi all

    I am running VMWare Server 2.0.2 on a Debian box (Ubuntu 9.10).   The host is a multihomed with the following interfaces:

    eth0 - 192.168.0.30/24

    eth1 - 192.168.1.1/24

    IP routing is enabled between the interfaces.   The default gw on the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet is.

    I have a Virtual Machine with a fixed IP of 192.168.1.50.   It uses a bridged in VMWare Server NETWORK adapter.   The bridged network is related to interface eth1 (192.168.1.0/24).

    I have a test on the 192.168.0.0/24 network computer.   The IP address of the machine is 192.168.0.35.   This machine I ping the 192.168.1.1 (eth1) interface.   So, I know that the IP routing and routing work on the virtual machine host.  However, I cannot ping or something else with the VM guest to 192.168.1.50 treat my test to 192.168.0.35 machine.

    What should I do in VMWare Server to enable routing between two networks?   I have to keep setting up multihomed and are the guests of computer virtual on a separate subnet.

    Thanks in advance to all!

    Assume that your host is connected to 192.168.1.0 only...

    ... He sends all packets to other networks, he can't speak for the default gateway. In this case, the default gateway should know the road.

    ... he knows the 192.168.0.0 network (because you added a gateway (host) to the network locally in the comments) it sends all packets to the host.

    In both cases, the host must have a routing software. Otherwise he knows about networks, but there is no way to transport a packet from one network to the other.

    I'm using VMWare Workstation 7.00.203739

    My PC is Windows XP SP3

    My Virtual Machine is Windows XP SP3

    I don't want my virtual machine is synchronized with clock 'the real machine', then reading here and there I put these lines in Windows XP SP3.vmx

    tools.syncTime = "FALSE".

    Time.Synchronize.continue = "FALSE".

    Time.Synchronize.Restore = "FALSE".

    Time.Synchronize.Resume.Disk = "FALSE".

    Time.Synchronize.Shrink = "FALSE".

    Time.Synchronize.Tools.Startup = "FALSE".

    However, after 30 minutes I work inside the virtual machine, I see that comments clock synchoronizes with the host country.

    What have I forgotten?

    Thanks for your advice

    When this occurs after the virtual machine is in place, for a while, I guess that you have activated the service 'Windows Time' - it disabled via services.msc

    I would like to get clarification using VCB v1.5 update 1 ESXi

    Backup VM with method - hotadd in vSphere 4 (all servers are ESXi 4)

    According to: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1004358

    1. Windows Server 2003 x 64 Standard VM +.
      VCB framework deployed on the ESXi1 and the local Datastore SATA ESXi2, namely VCBProxy01
      and VCBProxy02

    2. VM empty created on the two ESXi1
      and ESXi2: VCBProxy01(VCB-HELPER) and VCBProxy02 VCBProxy01(VCB-HELPER).

    but then I got lost in the backup selection list (see

    AWT,

    At the same time, we can take backup of machines 8 Virtual you can group virtual machines accordingly and create batch files.

    For ease of maintenance, you can batch files have either one for each virtual machine or to a batch of eight.

  • Support ESXi 5.0 host FC connected tape drives in the virtual machine running symantec backup exec 2012

    Dear Experts,

    We recently purchased C0H19A: StoreEver HP 1/8 G2 6 - LTO Ultrium 6250 CF TapeAutoloader. The purpose is to backup of VMS data, I mean selected data in virtual machines, as for the exchange of data bases email for server accounts database SQL server etc.. We have a full VM backup plan, so using symantec backup exec software.

    We have this configuration:

    -TWO DL 380 Gen8 servers (running UPDATE2 Esxi 5.0), both servers have not all SCSI ports

    -One SINGLE HP P2000 G2 MSA FC Dual Cntrl storage

    -TWO HP SN6000 12 - pt Windows Pwr FC switch

    -HP ADF

    All them above are related to the CF. Symantec backup exec 2012 is also installed on Windows 2008 R2, which is a virtual machine.

    But now, we are unable to see the tape library autoloader through the virtualization layer in the device of machine Manager virtual backup exec. Reading on internet, I also found some details that connected FC tape drives are not supported by the Esxi hosts. We are really stuck in this situation, all the solutions to this. I also read the article from vmware saying configuration for Esxi 4.0 FC tape drives and later versions

    Installation of a physical server windows with Backup Exec 2012 and HBA and connected to above switches FC is the only way to see the ADF? Even after reading articles on the internet, I'm not clear, please guide what solution I have now to get this thing going, I really need to find solution to this.

    Waiting for answers.

    Kind regards

    Hello, I'm a Backup Exec support engineer and yes the method supported is only by connecting the tape drive to a server of physical media. See the introduction in the Backup Exec HCL on Configurations of http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH175582 and http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH146293 alternative

  • Move a virtual machine to turn off between two hosts, shared storage

    Dear Experts,

    Please guide me for the next case. There are two hosts of Esxi, host 1 is Esxi 4.0 and host 2 is Esxi 4.1. There are store data SAN storage that is visible to both hosts.

    I watched solard winds VM monitor utility that hosting 2 consumes 90% of the memory while its processor is ok. On host 1 is normal. So, I want to spend only a few VM of to host 1. So please correct me if what I think are OK. I will turn off the virtual machine to be moved from host 2. Then I it will remove host 2 inventory. Then on host 1, I'll go to the data store in the folder that VM and do a right click on the file 'say add to the inventory' and now I'm going to see this virtual machine in the inventory of the host list, just turn on and everything is perfect, is this correct?

    Second question on the same hosts, there are a few other data stores that are visible to a host. As if this is the case there is a virtual machine on a data store that is visible to host 2 and I want to spend this VM to host 1 to reduce load on host 2. How to move this virtual machine because this data store is not visible to host 1? Will I have to copy this VM files in a data store that is visible to host 1? If YES then what real required to copy files?

    Kindly help me.

    Kind regards

    From your description I m assuming that you use not vCenter to manage your hosts, correct?

    If you have a store of data shared between two hosts you can do the steps you descripte (power off, remove the inventory etc.).

    For your second case there are several ways, it depends on where you want to place the virtual machine in the future. Wouldn't be on the shared data store that already exists or can in the local data store on the other host? Or is there an option to also display the current data store to host 1?

    If you want to copy the VM files copy the whole folder of it.

    Kind regards

    Mario

  • Backup of virtual machines on a remote host

    We have a number of standalone servers ESXi 4.1 in places remote, managed by 1 vCenter server and want to use the ghettoVCBg2 script to save them. We do not want to deploy a vMA on each server ESXi, rather we want to use 1 vMA by geographical area to manage VM backups for all ESXi hosts in this area. There may be 2 or 3 hosts 2 or 3 virtual machines running in each region.

    In my lab, I have 2 hosts configured on nets under different. I have 1 vMA running on host 1 I want to manage backups for host 1 and 2. The two hosts have only local targets for storage, no NAS or SAN or iSCSI.

    I have 2 copies of the ghetto script, each adapted to the ESXi host needs the VMs system backed up. Everything seems to work fine, I can run the script on the host 1 to backup VMs on host 2 (by using the - server switch and any copy of the script) with local storage on the host 2 as the destination storage.

    My question is: what path the data takes when save? Given that the vMA's in one place and it's back up virtual machines in a different storage location that is local to the target ESXi host, the traffic is forwarded through the host that is running the vMA? or the host ESXi target handles the traffic locally so that it touches the WAN?

    When we look at the performance on the network adapters on the host and two virtual machines (the vMA and the VM being supported), I don't see any significant increase in traffic, but backups take about twice as long to complete.

    Is there anything else I can check without having to put a sniffer on the network to capture traffic? Some places have slow links between sites, some are even the radio links to reduce WAN traffic is a priority in some cases.

    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

    Backups are started remotely through vMA using the vSphere API, but the actual backups and as mentioned traffic occurs between your hosts and data warehouses is destination.

    Hello

  • Backup methods for RDM

    I plan on P2Ving a Windows 2003 with 2 400 Go CX3-40 lun file server.

    If I join the LUNS as RDM on the virtual machine, which is the most effective method of backup?

    NPIV advantage in this scenario?

    Thank you

    If you have a RDM in virtual mode, you can use any backup method.

    And if you have SnapView license, you can also make a backup also offline if RDM is not in virtual mode.

    A good idea is have a physical machine connected to your San backup to make net-free backup.

    NPIV advantage in this scenario?

    NPIV is useful for control of the quality of service and sometimes for migration.

    But that doesn't help much for backup.

  • cannot not power off the virtual machine, but don't think the host it is running!

    I have two clusters VI3. An older cluster to 3.02 hosts and a new cluster with ESXi hosts. Level of current patch on ESXi hosts. New guests and old presenters sees the same storage, but I have additional storage which can see only the new virtual machine.

    Most of the migration to the new cluster went very well. A few questions. But a VM just GIVES me fits.

    After the failure of attempts to migrate the virtual machine to the new storage, I thought I just migrate the virtual machine to the new host and leave it on the old storage, for now, until we could find something later. VCenter events logs show that the migration has expired. However, the virtual machine appears in the new cluster and is no longer in the old cluster. Also, he turned on itself for some reason any. Turn off in Vcenter gives the error "the operation failed because another task is underway." Having the VM that I could put it off in before Vcenter, and no no unsure of how to use the RCLI for this, I have connected to the host directly mode "not supported" and has run vm-support - x to get the list of running virtual machines and their ID's so that I could kill him. However, the host does not include this virtual machine in the list of virtual machines. So I think a virtual computer that runs Virtual Center, but he thinks the host it runs on is unclear if I can't kill the process.
